I've been eagerly anticipating this video! The 372 itself is about five years old. My brother and I each bought one, he never used his so I bought it and that's the one you see, the other one is fairly used. I have run the stock one quite a lot, so I can directly compare two identical saws, one zipped one stock, and so with that authority I can say "what a difference!!" As Jack mentioned, this saw doesn't hesitate like my stock one, and has loads of power! This saw handles a 32 as good or better than the stocker handles a 28. I'm aware that the non X-torques are better but this is what I have, and for my first zipped saw I'm more than happy. That said I've only put about a gallon and a half through it, and the screens are still dark, so it's still finding itself, but I believe the writing is on the wall. My word to others would be that this is not for the faint of heart when it comes to investing in your tools (This wasn't cheap). But if you're a pro faller, or even someone like me who cuts trees as part of your job, the power, time savings, and smile on your face is worth every penny! I'm very happy with jacks craftsmanship and the overall experience, and I plan to do more business with him in the near future!

My first saw was an old white top husky 61 out in Alberta, it lasted and worked fantastic- How do you say bore cute, it had a 20 bar Lol. I used it enough to buy another saw, a cherry 066 off some estate sale. it had a 25 bar and was hardly used by the owner. All stock, I thought ported meant what my dad an old sailor spoke of- Rum and women when his ship came back Lol.

My father in law has a stock 385xp and loves it. I love it as well. Pulls a 32in bar great. I’m in Florida and am always cutting hardwoods, (live oak, hickory, water and loral oaks) I’d like a saw to run a 36 and a 42 when needed for stump cuts in removals. Will the 390xp be enough for that stock or maybe muffler modded. Or would a 395xp be the ticket
@hotsaws101

Kenneth hi. Depends upon just how patient of a man you are while sawing. The 395, zipped, is going to a far better option than the 390 in any tune configuration for pulling a 42" in hardwood. Well, imho anyway. Thanks for watching.

I know this is a year old but I really like this video. So with a brand New Old stock 390 that's had nothing but a good carb tune and a muffler mod what bar would you say performs the best 32 or 36 ? I got lucky and came up on several brand new still in the box old stock 390's (Which has been my favorite saw for several years to fall with everyday) and Due to Covid all us local Loggers lost our Old Saw Shop guy last year. So we're having to ship our saws out to have them gone through. I need to contact you about putting the insane-O on my current 390. I've put like 5 tanks of fuel through it since I swapped out a muffler mod and set the Carb to our conditions is all that's been done to it. Look Forward to hearing from you. R.C. "Charlie" Hill Owner/Operator/ and I sweep out the place. H&H Logging.

Randy hi. Part of the conversation that needs to be addressed is just how old of a NOS 390 that is in question. Husqvarna had changed a few things on those saws over the years. Personally, I won't take a stock saw off the landing. Reason being, they cut to slow with any length of bar. I would not run more than a 32 on a stock 390. Better have your chains dialed in as well. That's going to be the most important part of the experience with a stocker. They can be mad to run well. Takes some work,,, and some knowledge... Email is the best, 1st point of contact. Thanks for watching.

So I have a honest question here. Assuming they have the same sprocket, how does a saw with far more rpm in the cut have a slower cut time? I can understand the pressure you was putting on it could be different but it would seem that if the pressure was the same and the rpm in the cut is the same there would be no difference in time. Maybe someone can give some better info on this.
@hotsaws101
3 жыл бұрын
Allan hi. Pick me,,, pick me,,, lol.... I ran 7 tooth sprockets on all the saws. It would have been unfair to run a different tooth count on one or another. There is just as much, if not more, difference when talking about the torque differential than there is when comparing the hp numbers. HP doesn't cause the spinning action. That is the torque. More torque will pull a longer bar better. Or, you can lug the machine down further in the rpm range and not suffer slower times like with the 372xt. Far less displacement and at the same time much less spinning (rpms) speed yet it still wins. I put far more pressure on the handle bars & pistol grip during the 372xt runs. We could see that in the log aspect change. Had I let the 372 spin a little more free with less pressure surely it would have shown a little bit better run times. It boils down to the tuning in the 372 being altered to accentuate the lowend grunt. This is modding it to have more torque, which is the spinning power in a machine. The "clinical" definition of torque is a force that produces a rotation or torsional movement. It is generally off of some axis of rotation with a perpendicular distance consideration. Thanks for watching.

Ok, after reading the description I just want to add, MFG printed HP numbers are, simply put, what the MFG was able to measure when each saw was new and tuned optimally by them. 2-strokes are the most susceptible engines to HP changes, both from use and tuning. 2-strokes are incredibly finicky animals--you're essentially trying to optimize a pulse (single combustion event) to not only generate the crank force to produce HP, but to leave the system and draw a vacuum to create the suction to pull in the next pulse's fuel+air components. Engines designed entirely around optimal flow-through will produce the most total HP, to put it as simplistically as it can be said. Engines designed first, and then optimized for flow after they are built, will never reach the same HP levels. This will be nearly all chainsaw engines because of their rather awkward layout. I personally own an Italian-made 50cc Bizeta (known as "BZM") engine, the air-cooled variant, and this engine was designed and engineered around optimal flow dynamics first, with the engine layout essentially conforming to these flow paths second. Well, that may be an incorrect way of putting it; really everything is designed together as one, but I'm trying to help everyone understand the general concept I am getting at. The concept is this: the BZM is an optimally designed 2-stroke engine and it produces 15HP. Yes, that's no error; 15HP from 50cc displacement. It's also carbureted. I can only imagine what it may gain from fuel-injection. This is basically the Formula1 of 2-stroke designs--its cost is about $2,100 USD for the bare engine. It's food for thought, though. If Stihl was doing all that was really possible, at 70-80cc displacement we would be seeing likely >20HP. Engine builders screamed at this idea some years ago, calling BS, that >10HP was attainable from a 50cc 2-stroke. Then Bizeta makes 15HP from one, and the engine builders elsewhere went silent. Read about them if you don't believe me. They were built to power humans on on-road minibikes. A U.S. company discovered them as the ultimate powerplant potential for 1:5th scale R/C trucks, took the engine and re-made the crankcase exterior design using CNC to mate up to HPI Baja 1/5th scale truck's engine mount locations. These are ~40lb trucks. 40lbs with 15HP turned out to be absolutely insane--too much power--no one could utilize the power. By the time one could lay into the throttle without flipping the truck over backwards in a wheelie the truck was at ~50MPH and climbing rapidly in speed. At this point the truck becomes a missile headed on a straight-tracking path. In other words, it's not much fun anymore when your off-road truck only wants to go in a straight line or otherwise flip end over end in a $4,000 parts-spillout crash! Something that does like to go in a straight line though, is a chain! 😉 Somebody get a BZM into a chainsaw, please!

RecoilMan hi. Purdy sure your "golden boy" 50cc engine was tested with a pipe. Pipes are a known quantity to add BooKoo more power because they do a much better job at using the pulse wave to optimumize power. Scavenging as well. Saw manufacturers do some interesting things within the confines of building an engine that can get a long bar hung on it and thrashed around falling timber. A saw has to be compact. Moreso than a bike engine. Weight is a consideration. Even more than a bike engine. Saw manufacturers have some done some creative work in trying to get better exhaust efficiency. In the end however, it is more about less hydrocarbon emissions in philosophy & design. Also, hp is not torque. Saws need torque to keep the chain spinning while the bar is buried. Hp is an overrated concept imho. Thanks for watching.

@hotsaws101
2 жыл бұрын
Mike hi. No. In order to fully tune the carburetor, the limiter caps have to be removed. The X-Torq "system" uses raw air in a stratification process to lower the hydrocarbon output of the saw. It is designed into the filter base, carb, intake manifold, cylinder, and piston. They work in concert. To remove the X-Torq system the aforementioned parts have to be replaced. Thanks for watching.

Craig hi. Thanks for watching my small offering on YT. How's the maintenance aspect? Who is doing the carb dialing in - which is the same as how is it running jetting wise? How are the chains - which is pivotal? Which mix oil - as that plays a paramount part? And then there is the "will there be some weird mechanical issue due to a manufacturing error? If I could answer my need to have a "Day Job" would be unnecessary... One the other side of that, I have cut millions using fairly radical saws with minimal problems. Thanks for watching.

Randy - I hosed down the logs initially. This one is devoid of bark as well. Assuming that all factory chains are exactly the same, tooth length, tooth angles, tooth sharpness, tooth height and therefore depth gauge height, is very misguided imho. This comes from having had been using saw chain in multiple decades, using many different types of saw chain, and sharpening the teeth myself - by hand using many different file designs and using several different grinders. Unless the operator hits something, which rarely happens, it is as fair a comparison as your going to see. Regarding fairness & different bars, The paint is not always the same (new) thickness or toughness, the rails in the bars are not perfectly the same, true, internal width from wear - or no wear -, depth, etc. from manufacturer or even within the same manufacturer from production run to production run. This goes back to the been using saw guide bars since in the mid '70s in some capacity. Thanks for watching.

You should add, "Remove unnecessary, rambling-on video content", to your 'game plan'. Lol. Once I hit 15Gbytes downloaded on my "unlimited data" Verizon-scam of a hotspot plan, they throttle the connection speed to literally 2.0Mbit/s max down/up speed. So I clinch my fists trying to get through long videos. Not your fault really, I just happen to live in a Verizon-monopolized wireless internet zone (no other options). Just explaining why some people, like me, actually highly desire applicable-to-title video content with no extra seconds. I will jump for joy when the day comes I can access truly unlimited data without paying Verizon another nickel for their crap hotspot service.
