I have a Colt bow with the white limbs 45# , found it at a flea market about 25 years ago, it stayed in a closet until 4 years ago, when I shot it the string on the lower limb would slip out of the groove and the archery shop told me to not shoot it anymore. I put some Velcro near the tips and that fixed it, it shoots great and it's a beautiful bow too. I liked your video, and I just subscribed.

I’m just starting to refinish my dads 707-62 45 pounder. I’ve been winging arrows with it since I could pull it back in the early 80’s. The outside of the red limbs have some vertical cracking. I believe the cracks were there longer than I’ve been around. It still shoots great. I’ll sand it and varnish in the next day or two.

Just finally refinished my 707 45 pounder. I put tape over the writing. I can see its a lighter finish where the old varnish covers up the numbers when I applied. Same with the lighter spots on the handle of your multi colored wood bow. Wiping and sanding with acetone removed my spoting like that. It still looks awesome. I used acetone to take off the camo paint I applied 40 years ago. Then I sanded with some 100 grit and worked my way down to 400 grit while wiping with acetone again to get rid of what vanish was left. I hand rubbed I'm 4 coats of tru oil... It looks great! Mine had the number 47 under the arrow rest but is said 45xx-28 painted on the bow. I would assume it's really 47 pounds at 28"? I have a 32.5" draw length and can tell you it pulls back hard the last couple of inches when I get to full draw.

Hi Greg, picked up on something that I did not know. The lettering for the poundage, apparently x in front ofthe number subtract 1 lb for every x. X behind the number, add 1 lb for every x. Makes you wonder, why that just did not ink the correct poundage like it is stamped under arrow pad Thanks for your time Rick out

I have wondered the same thing.Never got a good answer. Yet, under the strike plate they stamped the exact poundage!

By the way the number of x before and after the poundage add or subtract weight. Example xx45 is a 43 pound bow. 45 xx is a 47 pound bow..🤷🏾♀️

Fofo Bolaños I sanded and coated them. You can reapply stain if you want. Pretty hard to hurt the bow. Just do not go crazy and over sand the fiberglass laminations. Sand till you remove the old coating. Then stop and do finishing sanding.

Dear Mr. Greg, I like the looks of those bows,too. They remind me of the Bear Tamerlane series, one of those sorts on my future list. Alas! Wood and metal shops in Jr. high school were not my strengths. Sir! Question, sir! For string silencing, between 'material puffballs', 'rubber puffballs', leather 'darts', and under the string loop 'pads', which material might suit you better for both puffballs and pads, and how exactly to 'place those pads'? I like Flemish strings for the color effects available in Dacron, but can a choice of a Flemish string be part of the silence equation, too? S, TY, S! SF.
@3DArchery
8 жыл бұрын
+SFsc616171 For the string silencers, I like yarn, mainly for the color choices. For the limbs, I use felt padding up by the nocks. These seem to work pretty good. But the biggest thing is actually a clean release. For the string it self, I use both. I too like Flemish for the color variations.

What all sandpaper grits did you use? Is it OK to sand the fiberglass in the same way as the wood?
@3DArchery
2 жыл бұрын
I use 60, 100, 150, 220, 400, 600 and 1000. You do not need to use as many levels. The key is to sand just enough to remove the old coating with the rough. Then lightly sand with the finer grades. Just don't go crazy on it.

@@3DArchery OK I'm just worried about discoloring the fiberglass or scratching it, I guess I just have to be careful.
@3DArchery

@@jake4194 You will not discolor it. It will look a different shade once you sand. But it will change back once you recoat it. While sanding, lightly lick your finger and rub it on the fiberglass to see what it will look like when coated. As for scratching. No worries, unless you go crazy with it.

Hi Greg. I have a bow that I made in Junior High Shop Class back in the late 60's. The fiberglass on the limps need to be sanded and refinished. What do you suggest that I use for a finish? True Oil or some king of Poly finish? I think that we used varnish originally. Love your refinish videos Thanks, Dale..
@3DArchery
5 жыл бұрын
Each has its pro's and con's. Poly's are easier to use, harder, but scratch easier. Tru-Oil take multiple coats, but will not scratch as easy, but is mainly a gloss, where poly can be matte. Poly does not soak into the wood, just cover it. Tru Oil soaks into the wood. I have used both and was happy with the result. Tru-Oil is better, but I like matte finish's so I use poly more foten.

Is there a way to date the Colts Model 707-62" ?
@3DArchery
6 жыл бұрын
Yes there is. Just from the model number I can tell you it is a 1965 - 1967 model. The 707 was introduced in 65 and in 1968 they used a four digit model number and the 707 became the 7070. In this period, they also changed logos every two years. So, the best we can do is a two year window. If you could send me a picture of the logo on the limb, I can find that for you.
