I'm just gonna say this here: Doom 2 on GBA is actually using a slightly modified version of the engine used in Duke Nukem Advance, which is why it runs so much better than the Doom 1 port. Doom 2 and DNA were both published by the same company, so they slightly tweaked the DNA engine and were ready to go.

3:07 Actually, Doom is a 3D game. Kind of While it doesn't require a 3D accelerator to run, the game has real 3D elements. The hitboxes for enemies and items, for example, are real 3D models. It's just the rendering system uses 2D info to create a 3D world. But at the end of the day, who cares. Doom looks 3D enough, so I count it as a 3D game.

I personally recommend Need For Speed: V-Rally 3 for a good 3D GBA racing game. The way the environments in that game are rendered is very similar to the way they’re rendered in Asterix and Obelix, but the cars themselves are sprites. Two other good ones to check out would be Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge and LEGO Drome Racers. Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge renders everything in 3D, while Drome Racers renders only the track in 3D; the vehicles are sprites. (Truth be told, I’ve actually wanted to develop my own 3D racing game for the GBA.)

There's a homebrew port of Doom on GBA (using the PrBoom source port as a basis) that is WAY better than the official port. Official is based off the Jaguar version, which had simplified levels and visuals compared to the PC original. They also removed quite a few levels and made other compromises including how enemies function (such as bodies disappearing shortly after being killed). It also censored blood. Sound was bad too. The homebrew port fixed all of this. Cut levels were restored, level complexity restored, blood is back and bodies no longer disappear. The sound engine was also rewritten and far closer to the PC original. In spite of all of this, it also runs far better than the retail version. There's a similar homebrew port of Doom 2 as well, which I've not tried. Doom 2 was already a much better port than the first, but still had some compromises and censorship. I'm not as familiar with this one, but i'd imagine the homebrew port is also high quality. Visually at least it's a major improvement (and music again is a lot better).

Interesting enough, while the framerate and audio isn't on par, the Doom 2 part was very ambitious. Unlike Doom 1, which got levels and audio axe and jumble everywhere, Doom 2 kept it the same as the PC version. NOT only that, but the gba version also had multiplayer with exclusive maps. Now, you can play that maps on PC via mods, but think about it. This was a huge step compare to Doom 1 on GBA that it also had multiplayer with the link cables.

Fun fact: GBA Doom 1 uses a modified version of the PC original's engine, but GBA Doom 2 runs a custom engine built by Torus just for their FPS games (I think it's called the Raylight Engine), of which they made about 5 of. Then they tried to use it for a full port of Resident Evil 2, and although the demo they made is *very* accurate, Capcom turned them down. Also... GBA NFS Porsche reminds me of Asphalt 4 on DSi; a bland, slow, ugly smudge of a game that was better off not existing.

Games like doom1 and build engine games are in fact 3d in terms of "game logic". In those games you are indeed engaging in a 3d environment. Not rendered in 3d and sprite objects aside of course. Those games don't let you aim along the z axis because of the way the 2d world would warp if you did so and because mouse look was a novelty when those game engines were developed. You'd hit enemies above your position because auto aimed was on and hardlocked.

Ozzy & Drix never gets mentioned in these types of lists. It's a 2.5D media tie-in game using 3D models and is arguably pretty awful. Spider-Man 2 also has 3D, open-world style sections and is never discussed. Driver 2 & 3 need to be mentioned, the latter especially as it's such a huge achievement for the handheld and the former as a comparison. Smashing Drive, a 1-to-1 port of the arcade racer, is one of my favourite games on the system, I think simply because it was so ambitious and is so pure in its aim; it's also the only GBA game to give me vertigo (racing up a skyscraper and falling down the other side). Adventures of Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius vs. Jimmy Negatron needs to be seen to be believed, that's all I'll say. I'd also suggest Blades of Thunder, American Idol and Cars: Mater-National Championship, just for some diversity.
