Suggestion: manufacture a crankshaft where the rod journals are offset by 90° rather than 180°. That (like a steam locomotive) should make it self-starting. A triple crank would be cool, too!

Don't you think that if this kind of mechanic would be more efficient than regular electric motors, that this system would be used everywhere instead of electric motors? Mechanical engineers at big companies aren't more stupid than hobbyists.. :-) It's still a nice creation but don't act as if it's a totally new and world changing invention which no one has ever thought of.

As opposed to an electric motor with the same load, would the electric motor have a wider range of rpm where less electricity is wasted as opposed to this design with the same winding amount with the same voltage input (Assuming all rotational forces required to overcome all basic internal frictions remain the same). I guess my question is, would this device be as efficient as a regular com mutated DC motor? I am developing a design for an RC vehicle, and am trying for a near realistic drive train. Obviously an electric motor paired with a small plastic motor (Pulling in air, and pumping with the exhaust stroke to the muffler) would be a waste of a little more electricity to realism, where as i could put both together using this solenoid design. Is the efficiency difference between this, and a regular DC motor, all variables the same, large or small in difference? Hoping an experienced engineer can give me a detailed, and mathematical response.
@realflow100
7 жыл бұрын
judging by the voltage applied and the current consumption. And the RPM you can see in the video. its not too terrible but not completely great either.. Could become reasonably efficient with lubrication and perfectly mated components and lowering the gear ratio to the output. so the output power is higher torque and lower speed. then it wouldn't be too bad. but i believe you should offset the solenoids by 45-90 degrees so you can start from a stopped position.

Going from rotary motor to reciprocating electric engine is an interesting but backward step. Rotary engines are more compact and powerful than reciprocating ones because they have no reversing parts. Remember the Wankel rotary engine? Reversing motion is a waste of energy and causes vibration, noise and limits the speed. Reciprocating compressors and pumps are being replaced with rotary ones because they are lighter and more efficient.
