Nice work! I just printed a 3D relief map of the world using a Blender and a 48bit tiff, and some software I wrote to process the data. It takes ages to print with all the retracts from peak to peak, and the vertical resolution is low. I got much better results rotating 90° around Y and using the X axis for height, but where overhangs would be greater than 50°, I rotated the model 45° around Y, and added a support frame manually - this came out great with very few retracts and no support generation. Unfortunately I used shiny black PLA, and it's pretty impossible to photograph, so will try spraying it. (For level printing, you could splice different colours of filament together to make the colour change with height)
