Generally the thin aluminum plate on these things warp with heating, so glass is probably still a good idea particularly if everything is level and you aren't getting good adhesion.
@BoulderCreekRailroad
8 жыл бұрын
Good point. I also just discovered the glass expands slightly as it heats so once the model has been printed and the glass begins to cool down it shrinks and the model becomes very easy to remove from the glass :) Cheers Luke

A good tip for a smooth finish is to repeatedly paint and sand with very fine sand paper. That way the paint builds up between the layers, until the surface is smooth :)

You could try using some acetone on the printed object to smooth it out. Depending on the filament you use, it could be enough to simply let it sit in the fumes from the acetone for a short while, that should melt the surface just enough to smooth out the imperfections. Some filaments are a bit tougher, and you might need to apply a small amount of acetone with a brush.

That works better for ABS than PLA. With PLA, it just tends to make it soft, whereas it actually dissolves ABS.

I use my 3D printer mostly for prototyping items up before I go and make a final one... As for items that need fine details you may need someone with a resin based 3D printer as those TEND to be pretty good at fine details. That said it looks like your well on your way to making some nice prints! I personally would choose Cura over Sli3r but hey whatever works!
@BoulderCreekRailroad
8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Calvin, I recently tried CURA and what I like most about it is it prints rafts and support material much better than Slic3r but I've found Slic3r to print thin walls a little better. Both are great and I'm now finding myself gravitate towards CURA a little more :) Resin 3D printer sound interesting.... I wonder if they will be in my budget range... lol, I just googled it and looks like they are a little expensive for me just at the moment :) Cheers Luke

In the end no slicer is "perfect" is what I figured out... ultimately got to do what works best! I tend to design models so it can have a total of 4 passes so that there is enough room for the slicer to add infill if needed. I tend to over-design my stuff for strength but hey if it gets dropped I know it is strong enough!

The design for the tank. if you leave the lid off it looks exactly like corrugated pipe. Matches the plastic stuff a little more than the galvanized. Make some sizes from 12, 18,24,36,48,56 inch and either make culverts or pipe loads.

Luke if you see this (or if anyone else knows) How does this compare to the Anycubic resin printer you use later for both quality of finished product and cost to make models? Not sure if I want to lash out for an expensive printer if I can't afford the consumables and the quality difference is minimal. I'd be doing 1/72 scale iems.
@BoulderCreekRailroad
5 жыл бұрын
the quality between the anycubic and this are light-years apart, the only down side is the Anycubic printer has a very small usable print surface and working with resin can get a little messy if you're not methodical with cleaning and post processing. The Anycubic photon printer gives much more superior results though. Hope that helps
@oldbaldfatman2766
5 жыл бұрын
Feb. 20, 2019----Luke has a video on the Anycubic resin printer. Going to be buying one myself this year because of MAJOR differences in quality between the 2 types of printers.I'm getting into zombie/apocalypse dioramas in 1/35th scale. Want my dioramas to be as realistic as possible just like Luke's. Think I used free 3D programs for my Google search starting this year. I have downloaded 500+ item programs such as gym equipment, sporting goods, weapons, furniture, tools, etc. Have even got at least 100+ programs of people, many of which are of actual people who had themselves 3D scanned and printed. Think I have so many things to print/duplicate, I better get ready to buy resin by the pallet load. !-) There are also free CAD programs where you can make your own things, INCLUDING people. It's just up to you how detailed YOU want them to be. The program also offers different hair styles, lengths, clothing, etc. Think resin printers are going to leave the monofilament printers in the dust in the coming years simply because of better print quality. Much like vhs tapes are no longer used since dvd's came out many years ago. No doubt the print beds will get bigger and hopefully, get faster.

Even though I have no intentions of building dioramas or learning anything, your videos are satisfying to watch on their own. I recommend you consider purchasing a 0,2-0,3 mm nozzle for your 3d printer, your print times will increase, but you will get much better detail. Also look at specialty filaments such as those with wood particles (bad for 0,2 nozzles though), metal particles, even stone/concrete particles.
