The answer “It depends” is really a good answer to the question regarding the "best" printer. It's an answer that never really satisfies people, but it's the most honest answer you can give.

Rostock Max v2! I got one as my first printer in 2014. I had started saving for a v1 (or maybe the orion I think?), and by the time I had the money for it the v2 was out. It did not take 24 hours to build, more like 8 maybe. But it probably took me longer than 24 hours to learn proper bed leveling technique and get usable large prints. I am still using this as my main printer, ten years on. I klipperized it very early on (used a Pi 1B I think) for the added processing power, and have done a slew of other upgrades since. Hayden magball arms, smart-effector, e3d-v6, BTT manta board, AC heated bed, aluminum bed plate, berd-air system, and a few other mods. It is my favorite printer and I love tinkering on it. Probably some hefty bias in that opinion seeing the amount of work I've put into it though. Certainly not a plug-n-play printer; but an awesome and fun platform to be sure.

Oddly my first inkling of 3d printing was from the movie "Small Soldiers" -1998, the opening sequence showed rapid prototyping using what looks like laser curing of resin, but I recall another that used laser sintering of a medium at about the same time. My first printer was a SV06 in Feb 23, I have since converted it to CoreXY and added a V0.2 to the collection. It was great meeting you last month.

One common trend I see in 3D printing is people hyper focusing on which machine and mods for printers as a barometer on 3D printing knowledge or skill. I am of the school of thought that the printing process itself is much more important. Get slicing and learn the intricacies of printing. It will make your outcome better than simply doing the pay 2 win model of just buying/building the "best" printer ever. Instead try to become the highest skilled you can be in actually bringing them to life.

It's not that easy... You can, need, and will learn a lot down the line. But if you buy a solid printer, you can focus on the things you do not the random problems the printer drops on you. Starting with an mk3/4 or a1 helps a lot, if you like to tinker sooner or later the voron project will come. But turning printing from a kinda geek hobby to an every day thing for most users... That's something... Gatekeeping never helped anybody...

Printing is boring, I only print mods for my printers or parts to build printers because that's what I like

Wholeheartedly agree. First build during the pandemic. It was a kit, Anet A8 Plus and it took me a considerable amount of time to put together but I learned a ton along the way. Next printer, Sovol SV05 which they later discontinued though I have no idea why as it’s a great clone of the Creality Ender 5 pro and it’s downstairs printing right now. I love the fact that while it’s not CoreXY it’s the next best thing in my book. I learned real quick that mastering the slicer (still have a long way to go) and the design/orientation on the print bed can make all the difference in the quality of your prints. Next for me is the Creality K1 SE for multiple reasons. More importantly, CAD and designing my own prints. I haven’t modded a lot though I’ve a great appreciation for it. I suspect that will come in time especially as I learn CAD.

Looking to make myself a reliable, high performance printer.. Been tweaking a CR10 into oblivion, even with Beacon, dual Y steppers and XoL toolhead. Now I'm 3-way split between a Ratrig V-Core 4, a Voron Trident and building something different, based on anything 350mm-500mm and going into tripple Z and CoreXY. I really like the building part, I have a Bambu Lab printer and I also have an old Solidoodle 3, getting it frankensteined into the same enclosed, CoreXY 200mm³ with tripple belted Z design as the bigger one I'm looking to build. I can really relate to the ADD/ADHD learning, making and printing things. But back to the question I'm trying to make; What printer/project would you recommend?

Trident is often my goto answer in these situations, BUT if you want bigger than 350 X/Y or a tall Z height, RatRig is the way. Voron kits don’t come over 350 for Trident and 350 Tridents are only 250mm on Z height. So unless you self source and get creative you won’t get a 350 Z height. I’m about to start building a 500 RatRig V-Core 4 on streams on the Mandic Labs channel (any day now) so maybe get subscribed over there so you can see how that build goes.

@@MandicReally oh, and in terms of a Trident, I would swap out the SB toolhead to XoL, Tap to Beacon and the Z leadscrews to belts. In making those changes, I would probably also go for longer Z extrutions and rails, but I'm not sure if I would need it. I have plans for two use cases so far; Voron PIF and aesthetic/functional PLA prints for my better halfs design-company.
