At a time of NES having found its voice, hit its stride, and pushed the envelope of 8-bit games, 1990 marked the times when Ninja Gaiden had set the standard for using cinema cutscenes to develop a story around an platformer adventure.
Thus we get this curious oddity that takes these concepts and applies them to fantasy adventure combined with an 80's anime story.
Astyanax is the tale of a normal 16-year old freshman with an unusual name, derived from Greek mythology. At least he thinks it is. While his life is ordinary, not so much is the reoccurring dream of a strange purple-haired girl calling to him, saying that she's waiting.
With no idea what it means, his day suddenly takes a turn when he is transported from Earth to another realm by a faerie named Cutie. She tells him that he must save the fair Princess Rosebud from the evil Black Horn. Granting him the mystic axe, Bash she points him in the direction of Black Horn's evil monsters and bosses.
Astyanax must save the princess, for she is the only one who can send him back home.
A platformer, in grand arcade style, calling to mind such games as Rastar. It's pretty much run, jump and chop your enemies with a little magic spell as a trump card mixed in. Collect upgrades for Bash and refills for your magic and try to survive the various lands under Black Horn's control all while watching the story unfold in cutscenes.
This may prove to be a large scale project. As of now, it has a lot of the rough sculpt of the first two levels put together but none of the polish or the additional scripts and deform algorithms implemented. For now it's good old fashioned use of cloning, sprite-modifying, layering, and bringing the depth out.
As always, this is not intended as a speed run or a walkthrough; merely a showcase of the depth and 3DSen profile WIP in action.
