I was so surprised when we began to learn that secular curriculum choices can be so hard to find for homeschoolers.

@@MakingEverydayMagic I had the same surprise over here lol. I can't tell you how many videos I've watched, only to find out they have religion tied into these books. It's a bummer. Some of them have great reviews too. Nothing against people's personal beliefs. We just want the school part of the curriculum.

Absolutely agree! So often secular curriculum is really a public school classroom curriculum that they individually package and try to apply to a single student homeschooler. This has not been a success in my house.

It's rediculous how hard it is to find a curriculum - even a science one that's not riddles with religion.

Thanks to you I found this site and I love the site as a whole. We will begin our homeschooling journey in a few months. We will be secular homeschoolers and I was getting a bit frustrated trying to find a prepackaged secular curriculum. The price of the curriculum kits were a bit out of my comfort zone, but I did get my daughter’s science and math curriculum from them. I also got a book that’s designed to help your child think critically. The site does have a lot of great items. I know I will be making more purchases from them in the future.

We are in AZ and have been doing Prenda microschool w/ an online charter school’s curriculum. While my 8 year old son loves it I feel like it’s too much play time and too unstructured for him. He has high functioning autism and loves hands on and stem. Timberdoodle seems amazing for that! We may be moving back to Cali anyway so I think we are going to take the dive into homeschooling! I’m feeling so much less overwhelmed watching your videos! The online planner is amazing! Exactly what I needed to start this journey. Can I ask what computers or laptops you use for your oldest that works well? Thank you again!

Yay for you!! My oldest will mostly use the desktop that is attached to our living room television when needed. I feel like we are approaching the stage where we need a dedicated school computer.

I noticed you said you read "The Story of the World" and you enjoyed it, but it's reviewed as being very religion based. How does this fit in with your non religion based curriculum? Thanks for this video, it's super helpful.
@MakingEverydayMagic

It is included in the "Non-Religious" Timberdoodle kit, and that is how I came to use it. I have also recently seen this being called religious. We did not begin using this curriculum until the Volume 2, or medieval times. I believe that Volume 1 may mention the Bible more. In my experience of listening and reading along with my child, I have not found it to be a "religious curriculum" or trying to push a belief. I do not believe that you can accurately teach the history of the world without also teaching about the religions that have shaped the world. There seems to be a large faction who also thinks that the SOTW is too kind to Islam. As we are now learning about the early start of America, I feel like the passages presenting slavery are age appropriate while also presenting truths that I know I didn't learn until much later. As with anything written by someone else, you have to find the "best fit." I very much appreciate this for what it is, a brief introduction to the history of the world that we will continue to expand upon as my kiddos age. I do always try to point out that historical accounts are often skewed in favor of men and those that wrote them. As a woman and mother to girls I am very quick to point out the accomplishments and achievements made by women of the times that are often overlooked. I also am sure to point out things that we have only learned in hindsight about some of the more prominent figures spoken about. I am going to include a link which may provide you with more insight than my own to help you make the best decisions for your family. www.secularhomeschool.com/content/717-story-world-reviews/

I'm glad you did an unboxing! You've said so many good things and I'm glad it's been good for you. I can see from this video that most of what's in this box would just be more "stuff" and get in the way of the carefully curated items that I already have and am passionate about. I ask myself why do I keep looking at curricula, then? 😂 But every once in a blue moon, something amazing shows up and takes its place among our well loved materials. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!

Hi! I’m planning on using Timberdoodle next year. Hoping you can answer a question for me. 😀 Is all of the curriculum easy for the student to start using if they haven’t used it in the past? Thanks!!

In my experience, yes. We had a small slow down with Math U See, she had not been expected to memorize any math facts in our last program. Math U See does offer mini programs to get kids well versed in those facts if you need it. We just had her practice and I would say she was pretty good by the end of our first year.

Doesn't Stories of the World contain religious content? The ones I have previewed do.
@MakingEverydayMagic
4 жыл бұрын
Which level did you preview? We started it in 2nd grade or the Medieval Times, and I have yet to feel like it endorses any type of faith. It does discuss them and their influences but I have not felt like it endorsed them. I have no issues with religion presented as a motivation for why people have chosen to do things throughout history. I would take issue with a preference being given toward a religious involvement. Please see Jennifer Cools comment on this video as well for a bit more info. I will link again a 3rd party review. www.secularhomeschool.com/content/717-story-world-reviews/

@@MakingEverydayMagic I have no issues with religion. I just prefer to teach hem as a whole versus one preferred side. If that makes sense. I can't recall what one I was previewing but it have Bible verses right off the get go and I'm trying to avoid that. I don't mind in teachers books because she won't see them. But I plan to teach things about all religions since our household and families are completely different lol. We let out daughter choose what or if she wants to identify by one.

I looked at the Volume 1 Ancient Times on their site, the chapter list has several chapters about Christian religious figures: Joseph, Moses, Jesus. The excerpt I found is not from those chapters. I am very interested in this now and hope someone here has more experience with this and can enlighten me. Like, I said, in my experience it has been very neutral in my opinion but it also has not been a period that covered those bigger Christian figures.

Do you know if they have any supplemental kits? I think I am going to be doing remote learning with my entering 3rd grader and I think we are going to need to do some learning between just the two of us on top of what the school is providing. Mainly because it's new for the school and they will be working out the bugs of remote learning. And yet I don't want to overwhelm her with two full curriculums.
@MakingEverydayMagic

Maybe not full supplemental kits but you can order each piece alone or maybe try a custom kit and just eliminate what you don't feel like you need. I personally, would just add what we feel like we need the extra in.

How do you grade all of this and keep doe up to date with her learning?
@MakingEverydayMagic
4 жыл бұрын
We are in Texas and are not required to keep grades. I do go over her work and will assign her a number grade based on % correct. She likes to have the grade. Being that we go over what she needs to do and has done in a day, it is easy to see where she is struggling or succeeding. By planning out our year and what we need to do weekly, it keeps us on track to finish on time. Timberdoodle does include a recommended schedule in the kit handbook and an online scheduler that is fully customizable. Also, the workbooks have answer keys so you don't have to guess at what the correct answers should be, they're all spelled out for you. If your state requires grades, you can easily grade the copies and retain them or transfer to a paper tracker or spreadsheet. I hope that this answered your questions, please let me know if it did not cover what you were asking.
