Sorry, I didn't watch the livestream until much later. Thank you for answering my question! I always welcome someone who explains working with computers before the year 2000 and how the people were so excited about the Internet. I've seen some great people being included in a layoff. Having the management to recognize the good work done by a team or by individuals isn't always the case. Perhaps you could talk about how to make your work be visible and be important in an organization? You've covered how certain positions, namely QA and testing, have been seen as less important than developers. I can see other reasons such as communication skills, personality and culture differences could be barriers to get work be recognized. Just some ideas for future contents. 🙂

Thank you so much for answering my question. I am left wondering then, what is the best (not easiest) way to start a career in Cloud infrastructure and backend? I'm not really drawn towards making pretty UIs, but I would be pretty interested in all distributed systems and the like. How can I do this with a background in C and Operating Systems? Perhaps a long question/answer, but a brief start would be very appreciated!

My background was 'C' and operating systems. Later I did networking, and then things that used networking. That led naturally into distributed systems. Most cloud computing roles - at least at Amazon and Microsoft and Google - don't require you know that, they want solid programming and problem solving. So, if you want to work in that area, apply to work in that area :)
