Nice video man, really well edited. Not brave enough to do the build myself, but currently having my 3S-GTE from my rev3 Turbo MR2 built soon by a specialist. Any chance you could advise the music ?

honestly with a factory service manual at your disposal it's just like playing with legos ... get a machine shop to do the head and deck the block and hone or bore the cylinders and after that just follow the directions in the manual and torque specs and use Toyota parts and it will turn out great.

So when I spin my crank it spins freely pretty well for a while and then all of a sudden it snags a little bit. While it spins it sounds like something is scraping. I lubed everything and all the clearances were perfect, maybe even a little on the tight side. Why do you think it could be snagging?
@velisma
6 жыл бұрын
Was your block and crank sent to the machine shop? What work was done? Prior history of both? All important questions. If everything checks out it should absolutely, w/o fail spin freely if everything is done correctly. Is your short block and crank completely cleaned/blown out? Machine shops won't always do this for you. It sounds like you either have debris in your crank/short block that needs to be cleaned or your crank could be warped. The prior is more likely since 3SGTE's have forged cranks but anything is possible. You say they're a little on the "tight side". Could be it too.

Nice video I like how you go over everything and give little personal suggestions with it. I am thinking of building my own 5S-GTE, which is the MR2 turbo engine if I'm not mistaken if not sorry. But I wanna put one in my 96 Camry to make a little sleeper. I think the MR2 turbo engine would be perfect since it's a toyota engine and it's also already a 4 cylinder.

Is this process the same for the 5sfe as I am trying to convert it to a 5sgte engine for sleeper build
@velisma
9 жыл бұрын
Not sure if we're talking about the same thing. Just so we're clear... 5SGTE is a 2.2liter 5S bottom end and a 3SGTE head.

velisma thats using the 5sgfe block? just a headswap? Interesting and very cool idea. ill have to look into that for my MR2. if the 5S has the same mounting points as the 3S. Are there any other concerns? is the 5S weaker? (built a 2AGE before from the toyota 2E block/bottom end + 4AGE head)
@vegetoe01
9 жыл бұрын
Sunshine Vargosain 5S has a stronger bottom end and can take more boost with less knock. It's common for Mr2s chasing higher than 400hp.
@velisma
7 жыл бұрын
The bottom end assembly in this vid is a 2.0 bored .20 over. It's currently pushing a tad over 460whp on high boost which is DEFINITELY pushing the limits of the stock displacement of a 3sgte. 450whp is doable on a 2.0 short-block but it's going to be working its ass off to achieve it and a good E85 tune w/ extensive modification is absolutely required. The two major killers of engines are heat and torque and at that level is a major concern. In addition, @ 450whp+, MKII MR2's can be sketchy AF on the street from personal experience. I'd suggest a 5S bottom end for better/more manageable power delivery & reliability that requires anything beyond 400-ish WHP.

Hey, does this rebuild suit a 5S-FE engine as well if I were to convert it to a 3S-GTE by installing a turbo and changing the cams?
@velisma
9 жыл бұрын
Not sure if I understand your question fully. Are you asking about installing a turbo and cams on a 5SFE or installing a 3SGTE and doing a cam swap?
@bigmac51fifty

I'm planning to change the head from a 3SGE and bolt it up to my 5SFE. Would that do me any good in terms of power and torque response? At the same time keeping it NA
@CADeathstar
7 жыл бұрын
lol, you convert a 5sfe engine to a 3sgte. If you were to rebuild the 5s and turbo charge it, it would simply be a 5sfe turbo. However, you can build a 5sgte which is a 5sfe block (2L or 2.2L block) with a 3sgte head. Brands such as Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissan have a number of engines that have inter-swappable heads and blocks. All in all, you have options, rebuild/custom-build or motor swap.
@CADeathstar

3SGE head has better air-flow than that of the 5sfe. The 3s is a performance engine. Gains shall be achieved, however, just not a lot as the car is still N/A

Ok this may sound silly. But I am new to this engine cause i may have found a nice mr2 91 factory turbo. I have read all night but cannot find anything if you buy this motor to kn which gen you are getting. As i said im a boobies to this motor but have built many racing motors n well love to learn all i can about them before I attempt to build any. Is there a number in the block like the 1jz or 2jz motors? Thanks..

I'm sure I'm forgetting some indicators but here are a few. 2nd gen. 3sgte's won't have a factory catch can. 3rd. Gens and beyond do. Also, the intake manifolds are different as well. 2nd gens. have divided runners w/ TVIS. 3rd gens and beyond don't. The collector is also a different shape and the inlet is different. 2nd. Gen: Center of manifold. 3rd Gen: on the side. It's pretty obvious. Valve covers are different, etc.

Don't give up, I bought a abused MR2 Turbo with a blown turbo and other problems, eventually the motor threw a rod. I spent almost a year to get it running, now the block is built but it is a beast of a car close to 300hp and endless smiles/ grins.
