im getting code p1698 which is usually bad crank sensor. crank sensor is new, distrib, cap rotor plugs wires all new. idle air sensor new, only thing havent touched is throttle sensor. my dtc code error is no ccd trans bus messages so im thinking TCM or ECM as u called it in this video. u think it could be ECM or the PCM even?

Did it throw a code? I have P0205...injector malfunction in cylinder 5....i just recently replaced the injectors...im hoping its just a faulty injector and not another issue or the ECU

Mines older than obd2 so no codes, just check your wiring to that injector

@@CowbellCustoms -- what year model is your XJ? it looks like it has a pre OBD-0 E/PCM. my 1992 has an OBD-1, it looks much different than yours. It's located in the engine bay, front left corner, near the headlight, and it's an all plastic housing. I replaced mine with one I found on eBay, in 2017.

did yours ever stall when hot then be difficult to start? I have correct fuel pressure and and spark. after replacing the ignition coil it has only done it twice and takes hours for the problem to occur, which makes me think it is definitely ignition related but sometimes i wonder if it isn't getting correct timing

Yeah, mine had a issue a while ago where the crank signal would drop out completely and die, then I was able to start it up right away. Installed a new oem crank sensor from Morris 4x4 in and worked well. Then recently it started to stall again, then sometimes restart and then slowly got worse and worse until it would not run at all. Ended up replacing the ignition control module under the coil and the coil at the same time and it's been running fine ever since. Well not counting turning my tie rod into a horse shoe

Mine wasn't making any sense, I thought I'd never figure it out. it always had spark but a mechanic told me the spark could be "weak" enough to let the engine start flooding at idle because the insufficient spark couldnt burn all the gas. I replaced the ignition coil and it helped so much that it was difficult to diagnose when it died again. It was heat related though and heat soak made it worse. It would run for an hour at a time instead of just 20 minutes. I put the spark tester on and no spark from the distributor to spark plug, the cap and rotor were perfectly fine. i hooked the tester up inline with the coil to distributor and it had spark but it was not consistent, it was like there wasn't steady timing as the engine cranked over. Apparently the only thing that controls the ignition coil timing is the open/close signal from the crank position sensor. The 77$ unit from borgwarner made the idle extremely rough so I replaced it with the original mopar sensor. (the forums say these jeeps are really picky about that sensor) Its been a week and a half of driving it all over town in the Texas summer heat and no issues. Nice to feel confident driving it again.

You need to check fuel injector coil for shorted coil to avoid new ECU to burn injector transistor. Maybe ECU failing has reason - bad injector.

+Maris Rubenis I've got a new set of injectors in it they all ohmed out correctly and all spray pretty cleanly. I'm thinking the fact I've got over 275,000 on it

Only correct way to tell if injector coils is good or bad is scope and amp clamp. With multimeter you cannot measure it. Resistance check can show 1 ohm difference in measurement, but this is nothing to tell if coil is bad. There are videos how to 100% tell injector coil health.

Depends on the year of your vehicle. Most jeeps you can just plug it in and go. But anything after the early 2000s that can be a little dicey with the immobilizers

@@daleoriane6974 -- if your model year doesn't have the smart/fob key, or some smart ignition system, then you won't need to reprogram anything. my 1992 didn't, just as long as you get the same series E/PCM unit. They vary from manual and automatics, also you have specific units made for CARB emissions, then there's the Federal units, and Canadian editions. I found a list once, I just never posted it, but it can be found with Google www.moparpartsgiant.com/parts-list/1992-jeep-cherokee/electrical/single_board_engine_controller.html?Filter=(E=ERH;T=DDQ;M=4+Door+Sport+Utility+2WD)&PNC=1
