I have the same issue I have found no solution for the condensation in the cap which in my particular case destroys the rotor terrible terrible design. I get about maybe 8 to 10,000 mi before I have to change at least the rotor because it's demolished thank you for the video I'm see though that I'm not the only one that's having this issue I have tried several things to get more air through the distributor to solve the condensation but nothing has worked thank you again for the video. bye now

Thank you for watching and commenting on the video. I have sourced a distributor cap on amazon with brass contacts that seems to hold up better to the moisture but it still needs cleaned regularly from the corrosion.

I had a 1989 Chevy half ton pickup with a 5.3 and it had the same problem. My dad had the same vehicle and his had the same problem also. And I didn't have to change cap for years. It's the seals in the distributor leaking moisture from the engine into the distributor

I found a little ridge on the distributor. It wasn't flashing. The distributor and gasket did not have a corresponding recess. So, I made a form a gasket. Hasn't bothered me since. Lousy design. One cap I had also had plastic injection mold flashing in a different location. Took it back. 2001 Silverado Shortbox Stepside, 105000 miles. Don't use, probably sell it.

Buying my dad's truck, it's beautiful and fun to drive, but I am also buying the issue that comes with it, the distributor on my 2001 Silvy 4.3 is awful in this Florida humid weather. The plastic screw holes on the distributor plate broke so I had ot buy longer screws and get some nuts to clamp it down with what was left, and that is a tight fit indeed! Mine got to the point where it did not want to start after a storm, and jsut a couple months later it started to fail as well. Hell, a week ago my dad and I did that "clamp" fix and it worked well, cleaned the contacts and it ran smoothly! Up until 2 days ago and now it's running rough again, and the cap hasn't even moved, secure as heck. I'll have to try that brass cap next time, heh.

they usualy crank without starting. some people have coil trouble but the 4.3 distributor has a plastic body besides having moisture problems if you take the cap off and look at the poles it should show if it is worn or crusty but the caps have problems too they get old and spark between the cylinders inside the plastic.

i think the main thing to check is that its not rubbing inside the cap. if it will run you can put a hand on it and try to feel if it is . but some get bad enough you can hear it. also some people have problems with the ground for the ignition coil

Someone has to make a better cap for them even if they made a cap like the old style tall cap. There's still enough room for one of them under that firewall. You may have to change the wires but its not going to happen every few months. I had a 4.3 that had an intake gasket leak and it would condensate in the oil and moisture would seep up through the dist. giving it the vapors once a week. That one took me a couple weeks to figure why it was getting the vapors under the cap but the intake gaskets fixed for good. Crazy things.

I normally would agree and usually try to use factory GM parts but this was an original part in the truck since new and they have had numerous tech bulletins on this very issue. I installed an aftermarket aluminum distributor when I did the engine rebuild a year ago and have not had this issue happen again. Thanks for watching and commenting on the video.
