Many rain pants have full zipper openings and can be put on ever over arctic gear and sub 100 boots, which are HUGE. I can't image having rain pants that didn't have this feature. The rain kilt sounds interesting, but there are places where you can freeze in that, because of wind and rain combination. Now, my rain pants are used far more often as an outer layer for heat than actual rain, but that saves a piece of gear, and the full zips means you can vent during more active times, then zip up to retain heat when you rest. Of course, gear is very dependent on where you hike. The rain kilt seems it would be really useful where it is hot and rainy, which we get here during the summer, so I'm going to check those out.

Yes, for sure every piece of gear has its limits although I use the kilt full 3 season. I believe it’s not a big deal to be wet and a bit cold on the ankles unless it’s - degrees C off course! I have a couple of different pants as well, quarter length zipper and I prefer the kilt anyways…understand it’s not for everyone though! If you like pants 👍🏻 there are a lot of really light weight pants as well. I hope you give kilt a chance 🙂

Agree the amicus is a great stove. I like better than the windmaster. Not because the wm is somewhat heavier, but because it is much more difficult to pack even with the tri-flex. Can’t see the windmaster is worth about twice the price. Also love the piezo igniter. Makes it so easy to start up (although a lighter always is packed for redunancy).

I agree with canister stoves. The Sots WM is my favorite for all conditions. Tried the BRS and like the other clones, they suck in anything but the ideal conditions. I have used the Soto WM in below freezing conditions without any issues. Played with alcohol stoves but they aren't kid friendly or as camp friendly. Always have to worry about someone knocking it over. I use alcohol only when I am solo. Otherwise I will take the weight penalty to care a fuel can. Great videos that are well thought out.

@ both are good choices. Less quality control issues with Soto but that is 'splitting hairs' as they say. Soto WM was my choice and I have never regretted it. You would be happy with the PR deluxe as well. If I remember correctly, Soto perfected the design, PR just copied it. I went with the original (Soto wm)

Speed up your Esbit boils by splitting the tablet in half. Seperate the two pieces and light them. Th eincrease surface area will allow you to boil much faster. My 2 cents.

Once more, great vid. These are my comments about the items you mentioned. Relating to Number 4 (rain pants), I beg to differ. It really depends on the weather. I hike often times in higher elevations (above the tree line). An afternoon thunderstorm up there is no joke with high exposure to cold wet weather that could be life threating. My rain pants weigh around a bit less than 200 grams and have velcro openings in the bottom so that it is not necessary to remove shoes to put it on. However, they don't stay up much if you are also walking, so I bought a cheap and light suspenders that go over the shoulders to help the pants stay up. In order not to fiddle setting it up during a rain storm, I already have the suspenders clipped on the pants before hand so the pants and suspenders can be worn quickly (when its suddenly pours buckets). I have never used a skirt but I imagine that they are ok for forest walks or in warm weather hiking. For gloves I use what Andrew Skurka recommended (showa gloves - check his site for more info). Again, for cold wet weather (from 2C to 12C with high winds), I found I needed serious protections from the cold and these gloves have not disappointed me so far (even though I have had around 4 opportunities to try them out in cold weather conditions). Are the gloves you listed Ok for cold wet weather too ? Or are they better suited for different climes? Thanks and keep the videos coming!

Thanks 🙏🏻 and we’ll, I have been using the kilt both for forest and mountains and find it to work just fine. I tend to be wet up to the knees but that dries pretty quick when the rain stops or during night. My setup, with the kilt and the gloves, I use for the 3 season I’m hiking and that means like 0-4C to well summertime and sun ☀️ during the day and sub zero and down to -4 (-7 is my coldest night with my setup) during the night. Most of the time is spent in forest yes because I live down south but I wouldn’t change anything for above tree line at least not in Sweden for 3 seasons…depending off course…early spring or late fall and in the mountains it’s a good idea to be prepared and look at the forecast and based on that do changes if I feel the need for it. I hope that answers your questions, if not just come back ok 👍🏻🙂

I have both the Amicus and the Windmaster (triflex). I like the Amicus, but love the Windmaster. I believe the triflex version is just a hair lighter than the Amicus. It also has a better simmer control. No problem with packing the stove in Toaks 750ml. There's something very satisfying when using a very well designed piece of equipment.
@roberthammenrudh

Both are great pieces of gear no doubt about it and what to choose depends on personal preference and need. Not sure about the weight and if the trifex combo is lighter than Amicus 🤔 have to look that up, might be if you have the piezo version which I don’t have. Do you have a weight on yours?

how would the rain skirt work in high wind conditions? otherwise nice idea.

I have had no problems in wind, there is an adjustable strap for making it tighter or looser depending on wind or how you prefer it to fit and it blocks the cold wind great and helps staying warm as well. But off course, a pair of pants will always have better protection, but also a lot sweatier.

For rainy days or early morning hikes/hunting I use gators. They slip on quickly and keep the part of my legs dry. Before when I didn’t use them my pants would get soaked and the water would deep into my socks.

@happykal11

The gaiters I use are a cheap brand called Sundick. I don’t remember if I got them from amazon or a sporting goods store. They’re a breathable waterproof material and sewn in a rip stop pattern. I find wild most “breathable/waterproof” material I’ve had mixed results. I have a work coat by Viking that’s supposed to be waterproof, but I have to reapply a water repellent. The breathable part is debatable.

I also bought a pair of waterproof overmitts which I've never used! I used to share your dislike of rain pants, and for the same reasons, until I discovered Berghaus Paclites. Because of the full-length of the side openings, these were the first I could actually get on and off without removing my boots and without getting tangled up and falling over. They also breathe reasonably well and provide a warm windproof layer for colder conditions. In warm weather I don't take anything, because I always wear gaiters and have a longer-length rain jacket, so this only leaves exposed a slight 'giggle-gap' of fast-drying trouser fabric around the knee. I'll keep an eye out for your pillow!
