In this video we are going to take a look back at one of the headline heritage railway events which took place in 2023. This was the Four Castles event, which was held at Didcot Railway Centre on the 4th March, to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the Castle class locomotive, which was one of the Great Western Railways most successful designs.
The event brought together 4 of the Castle Class locomotives which have survived into preservation. These were number 4079 Pendennis Castle and number 5051 , both of which reside at Didcot. They were joined by a pair of Tyseley based Castles who travelled to the centre with a railtour from Birmingham. These were number 5043 ‘Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and number 7029 ‘Clun Castle’. This railtour was also special in itself as it was the first occasion when two double chimney variants of the Castle Class have double headed a train on the mainline since preservation.
Also running on the centers main demonstration line was resident large prairie class locomotive number 4144. A lineup of large prairie locomotives was also arranged after the Tyseley Castles departed back to Birmingham, and Pendennis Castle took over 4144 on the demonstration line for the remainder of the day.
Be sure to stick around to the end of the video for a very impressive run past from Pendennis Castle, and if you did enjoy the video, please leave a like and subscribe to the channel for more heritage railway content.
Also let me know if there are any particular railway events you would like to see me feature on the channel this year and I will add them to the list, enjoy the video.
