So just to clarify, these guys are a 'comedy rock band' hence why they said they have been going for 40 years. It's a joke! Also, this is only half of their actual Four Chord Song. There are a lot more songs in the original, plus there are literally thousands if not tens of thousands of songs based on the four chords C, G, Am, F or whichever key you prefer.

@Ghoundai Close, but this is I-V-VI-IV. Pachelbel's Canon in D is I-V-vi-iii-IV-I-IV-V. People just connect the two because they're both progressions that are sometimes used in pop music and pointed out. There are only a finite amount of chord progressions in music, so eventually you're going to get some repetition. It's the same with film and other art forms. Eventually you're going to notice similarities.

just like to say to all those trying to name the chords, there is no specific four chords. it depends completely on the key. The only thing always the same is the chord progression. For the sake of this video they transcribed all the songs into the same key.
@perrylloyd6954
9 жыл бұрын
To be more specific, you can take any major scale and play, in this order, the first chord, the fifth chord, the sixth chord, then the fourth chord. (I, V, VI, IV). All chords are major chords except for the sixth. Also, I think they're playing it in E major, so for those wanting to play it the way these guys do, that would be E major, B major, C# minor, A major... in that order.
@jaynick7280
9 жыл бұрын
Perry Lloyd I believe the denotation to show that the sixth is minor is to not capitalize it. I.e. (I, V, vi, IV). I've also heard some people adamantly say that this was done in D major, but I agree that it was most likely E.
@uakron17
9 жыл бұрын
Gordon Sucholotosky Definitely E
@skillerfiftyone4592
6 жыл бұрын
This version is in E, but the studio version they put out on youtube is in D. Also: It varies greatly from each person you visit whether or not you capitalize to signify major or minor. Some people just put an m afterwards like usual. So the chord progression goes I V VIm IV. One more thing I'd like to add is that some songs begin on the VIm in the medley. For instance "It's my life". In that instance the chord progression is VIm IV I V.

@Lcas58 @Gavanization It doesn't have to be those 4 exactly. You can transpse it into any key. The transition cycle is 1maj 5maj 6min 4maj. Just use the scale. I'll give you some examples that would work: C maj, G maj, A min, F maj. D maj, A maj, B min, G maj. You just need to know the major scale of your root chord and the respective scales of the other 3.

It's not actually that all these songs are using the same four chords; they're using the same chord progression: I - V - vi - IV. A lot of these songs would actually use different chords, but Axis of Awesome transposed them into the key of e major, to match "Don't Stop Believing". As for why that particular progression is so popular, I think it just happens to be very intuitive, which makes it catchy.
