Honestly, the truest thing on this video is save the white. I'm still learning to save the white and I'm starting to learn that the white is crucial. It's so difficult so I'm glad you mentioned trying to paint in a monochromatic style!

"fill the whole page up with colour" this is exactley what one of my art teachers told me back in school to do when we where trying out watercolours, and this is exactley the reson why I have not touched this medium since. He wasn't a good teacher I know thst now, I have been thinking about giving it a chance again. Thank you for a very informative and great video😁

All wise advice. I like how you stick to "artist" language...like value and hue. That's how artists talk and communicate specifics to each other. It's important to learn the language. Great video.

Taking a slightly different perspective, “Transparency in 2D design is simply the quality of being able to see through (or partially see through) one or more layers in an artwork. Like texture, transparency can be real or it can be implied or suggested. Opacity is a similar term but refers to the inability to see through a layer.” When I listened to the beginning of your presentation it seemed that you might be equating the value of light and dark colors with transparency. My thought is that you can have dark colors that are transparent or opaque and light colors that are transparent or opaque, unrelated to value. A light color such as say, Hansa Yellow, can be as opaque or transparent as say, Ultramarine Blue, and the transparency of a color may be impacted by the properties of the minerals that make up the color. Some colors simply are more transparent than others regardless of the water added, just as other colors are more granular. It is true that when you add water to a color, you can achieve a lighter value of that color. I just think it is good to remember that transparency is about the ability to see through a color, regardless of whether it is light or dark. Value does not, in my mind, equal transparency. Thanks for the opportunity to comment and happy painting!

In a way, you're being just as reductive. With watercolor, most everyone will be painting on a white substrate and the only time that thinning will result in a darker value is if you're painting over something that's already got a darker value, which quite often in this medium is a rare case. In a vacuum, yes, thinning only affects opacity and saturation. In practice, it affects saturation, value, and possibly hue because of how it interacts with other layers.

I too have been wanting to start a journal for quite some time and I had it all ready to go , yesterday was going to be THE DAY everything laid out to start and I was really looking forward to it BUT my husband became quite ill during Monday night and ended up in hospital . We were there all day yesterday , we came home in the evening so as you can imagine my journal is again on hold until he gets much better. I am his carer but sometimes things get worse for him and this was one of those times. He too is my everything and we have been together for 35 years and still feel the same. Hope you get enough LIKES you certainly deserve to and I would love to do this one, never too old to learn anything is my motto.

Watercolor Misfit you can clearly see your video making skills are on par with your watercolours, that's for sure! But seriously, thank YOU! your videos, along with other youtubers, are the main reason i just started studying art professionally now (i started a bachelor's last week). Im also trying watercolor more nowadays, im colourblind so normally stick to black and white sketches as i cant trust what colours i see, but your vids have given me the confidence to branch out and try watercolour, with all its colour and tonal nuances. I think practicing monochrome is an excellent tip from this vid that im gonna take away and work on! But just know that you do inspire a future generation of artists, and im basically proof of that, so you should be very proud :)
