I haven't read that book No More Mr. Nice Guy (yet), but I can already assume what's in - from experience. I'll give an analogy. I used to play basketball every day, I'd never win. However, once I started being selfish, I started to win consistently.

Agreed! I especially love when writers bring in examples from other people. It's such a great way to get multiple perspectives in one book. Lots of the recent nonfiction books I've read do this; I find women authors are great at bringing lots of voices into the narrative.

Congrats on hitting 5 million! What you said, "There is no destination if there is no journey" reminds me of a book called The Principle of The Path. It was written by Andy Stanley, a pastor of a large Atlanta church, and while he does go into some faith elements, the book is mostly practical advice. The significant quote is, "Your direction, not your intention, determines your destination."

I love that you are very honest about your journey.. thanks for giving me the perspective of someone who has reached the top of the first mountain. I am at the second mountain but never reached the first quite fully.. I have a family but I sometimes feel conflicted with the time and energy I don't have to rush up that first mountain because of my role as a mother . Your perspective was really helpful .. thank you

I feel like for a lot of women the first mountain is actually the second one. We are raised to serve and please and be loving. Self, for us, is something that might come later or not come at all
@saltycrunch
9 ай бұрын
Well said. When Ali was talking about how men are raised to sacrifice for others, I kept thinking "WHAT? That appears to be the opposite of the male experience, whereas the female experience is very much one of self-sacrifice in favor of others. How many men give up their careers for their family compared to women, for instance?".
@The_Reductionist
9 ай бұрын
@@saltycrunch Its not a competition - though I appreciate your insight. We all talk with our inherent biases even with the best of intentions so I'm sure Ali didn't intend to be dismissive of women's sacrifice. In terms of 'mens sacrifice' - they're more often expected to bring home resources, provide for the family and expect little in return. Of course, this isn't the experience of all men/women. Theres the macro, and then theres each individuals experience.

Oh man, all the second mountain stuff really resonated with me. I built a career, travelled, saw lots of friends, have an awesome Instagram, but have felt wholly without passion or purpose to the point of feeling like life itself was pointless. Building community, building roots and routines, and fulfilling projects and ideals is the answer. I’m still in the process of transitioning to the second phase of life, or climbing the mountain. That’s the theme for me this year. Climb the mountain (put in the work, suss out the things I need). Thank you so much for putting this wonderful content together, it means a lot 🙏

You eloquently explained how certain things can lead to results. By definition, that would make them life-changing. Also, when you started talking about goal-setting, it reminded me that I don't have my goals written down. There is a series of two books that compile all the wisdom and much more of the last three books Ali mentions here. It'a "The courage to be disliked" and "The courage to be happy", if you really take the time to understand the phillosophie and the psychology of these two books. Then those mentioned here will make a lot of sense intuitively. He has made a video on these before i believe they should be a "read first" disclaimer to every video of this kind :)
