Super helpful!!! :) i really enjoy how you give each a fair try and don’t just skip straight to the one you prefer the most, really helps with options !!!

Another method that is kind of overkill but metaballs ! Ahaha, I used them to create a nice cave (more or less pretending the path water could have created inside a rock)

Could you create a tutorial on the coloring/texturing workflow from Blender to Unity? Do I need to unwrap my landscape? How do I unwrap a landscape? All the tutorials are about unwrapping barrels, cubes or monkeys. Should we use the shader stuff for this? I'm so lost on this front
@RogDolos
5 жыл бұрын
All of these landscapes are created from flat planes, which don't need any special unwrapping. So they are even easier than barrels or cubes. In Blender you can literally just hit unwrap and that will do. Or generally the original plane primitive is already unwrapped for you. That's because the edges of the plane are open and there's no unusual convex geometry, etc.. If you want to break up where colours go, you have multiple ways to do that. You can just break up the mesh itself (it will keep the unwrap) and put a different material on each mesh-- or you can add seams with the unwrap to mark out areas for different colours (and then you'd have to paint the texture but that's more complex than I'll explain in comments). Mostly I use the first method for the lowpoly flat-shaded work, because it's faster and cleaner. I personally don't make materials from within Blender, other than sometimes assigning them for names. I find it less fuss to just drag-and-drop materials on a mesh from within Unity. I do use custom shaders within Unity sometimes, but honestly more often to challenge myself or create a very specific appearance. For a landscape the standard shaders are just fine. I hope that helps.

I'm new to this so have no idea what I'm talking about but if sculpting makes less poly counts. Could I make a terrain like the terrain editor, add that as a layer, add a new plane above, invert the sculpting tool and sculpt the new plane over the top of the bottom layer and then delete the bottom layer? Kind of like making the top plane a cloth material, using the bottom as a mold then making it solid?

how do I get the Another Noise Tool window?
@RogDolos

Make sure you have the addon enabled first. It's included with Blender but not enabled by default, so check your addon preferences (it's listed as "Add Mesh: A.N.T.Landscape" Then as indicated by the name, you add a Landscape under Add->Mesh

I know this is way after the fact, but I was confused about the same thing and figured I'd reply for anyone else who might be looking for an answer. If you swap to Edit Mode (either by pressing Tab or by using the drop-down in the top left) you can select your mesh and use the search tool by pressing F3 to search for the "Subdivide" option. Hope that helps!
