6:41 LOL. Gay people can be every bit as judgemental as anyone else. Their gay fans turning their backs on the band because they toned down their sexuality? It reminds me of my brother in law, who is a hair dresser. When he got engaged to a woman he lost a large portion of his gay clientele, because literally, he came out as straight. It's ok for them to judge people, but god forbid they get judged.

That story is ridiculous -- a pure made-up paranoia trip on the part of narcissistic bandmembers. "Normal" or "square" families really don't go around suggesting hipster potheads are unclean because they aren't "blonde" (although "if the shoe fits"... anyone dressing like a homeless mental case and hanging around public parks in San Francisco shouldn't be surprised if they are treated like that -- SF is the epicenter of homeless, public drug addiction, and rampant crime -- just ask Mayor London Breed!). 4 Non-blondes were drama queens about their "controversies." Probably doomed to self-destruction because of that. Like many rock bands, egos and narcissism usually undermine success. 4 Non-blondes were no different. What do you mean by "it was the 90s" in regard to it being more difficult for gays in music or something? You gotta be taking the piss mate. I was born in 62, arguably lived through the best few decades of music (of all genres) and throughout that time people didn't give a shit about your sexuality. We had plenty of gay musos, Little Richard (a black American from the south), Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Courtney Taylor Taylor, Bowie (though he went both ways as with Marc Bolan) the dude from the metal band Judas Priest, plenty of gay women and tons more. It's the last couple of generations who make a big deal about sexuality, no one back in our days gave a shit and that also went for race. All this is recent nonsense, the music scene was the one scene that didn't discriminate against anyone

I could tell they were L-bo's, but that didn't bother me. It's just the same as other people's opinion that if Ya don't like a song, a sound, it just will not work. It's an 'each to their own' kind of deal. That being said, I'm impressed that Pink's break out song was penned by Perry. I'm certain her talent will live on. It "was different than it is now" because nobody cared if a person was gay or not. Everyone knew they were gay but nobody cared. Sexuality doesn't define a person, it's not a persons entire identity, or make the person less talented. What happened? Well, they annoyed the living shit out of everyone and somebody shoved a gag in their mouths. See also, Sinnead O'Connor, Alanis Morrisette, etc. No, I'm not anti-feminist. I strongly believe that every woman has the right to make the same money, have the same opportunities, and succeed or fail on her own merits just as men do. These women failed. And this is no different than any other band fronted by men who got gagged because they were annoying... Dexy's Midnight Runners or Men Without Hats for example.

No one hit wonder band should be ashamed. It's a hit after all! But 4NBs were so into their "controversial image" that they couldn't just break up and move on like a million other bands have and always will do when the one-hit soundtrack runs out of steam. "Annoying" is the right word for too much "image" without sustainable substance.
@carlhicksjr8401

@@GhostRanger5060 When you've got 'controversial' bands that can make a living, stay relevant, and still say what they have to say [Dave Matthews, Midnight Oil, Bob Dylan, etc.], and you still let your 'image' shoot you in the foot... yeah, that's a fail. Like Sinnead O'Connor, 4NB went to war with society and were amazed when society didn't fight them back. We just hit the 'Mute' button and ignored them. And **literally** nobody cares what any of them are up to nowadays. We'll be over here listening to Indigo Girls, a feminist duo with a message that we actually enjoy listening to.

I have a minor connection with 4NBs. First, I remember seeing them playing at a bar before they were signed, and later I had several classes with one of the members after the band had broken up. If you sell 5 million records and have no respect what makes them think selling 10,000 records will earn them respect. Artist need to know one thing, they are always playing it safe. If they want risks, join the military, they will shoot at you thus risk. If you sing, play put the best effort you got so there is no regret but an artist, musician is never truly at risk. You are always playing it safe or experimenting a new sound. You are not original there are millions like you, you are just lucky some people hear what you play and like it.

The band's name says it all. You wouldn't expect a group named 4 Non-blondes to be glamorous, and they weren't. Ratty hair, ratty clothes, grimy faces. And Linda Perry's vocals were the very definition of shrill. I thought my ear drums would burst every time she got to the part of the chorus where she sang "Hey what's going on". Had to turn off the car radio many a time when that one came on the air. So glad they didn't last.

Being a 'Rock Star' is such a precarious position - often the lesser talented artists are able to capture the attention and fandom of listeners. Interestingly, many of the talented musicians/recording artists are able to have successful post-stardom careers as session musicians, songwriters and producers. One of my favorite musical artists is Todd Rundgren - who's had more success as a Producer than as a Musician/Singer.

I had never heard this band before. Like many things, it was before my time. I went to listen to their hit song, and there was an almost visceral immediate reaction, like "Oh, so you're the ones behind this!". I think that's all that needs to be said about the song's staying power. As for how good it is, I think my reaction also tells that, but music is subjective, so who cares? Though I do love the outfits, and will still check out the rest of the album.
