That is because there are ton of videos out on how to set up and use noise gates, limiters, compression and noise removel like refir in reaper. Yet most of them don't explain what it does to the audio when you are doing it and for whatever reason people don't actually listen to it I guess to see what effect it is having. Using these features to a small degree does work and can help but they are not magic and if you use them to extremes to remove high levels of ambient noise it will degrade the signal. That is just how they work. There is no replacement for a proper recording envoirnment. If you have to record in a place that is very "live" or has ambient noise then get the mic closer to you so your voice is at a higher level than everything else.

Having an old laptop with constantly running fans is a problem that I was only able to solve by using reafir to subract out the fan noise and only the fan noise. Works quite well as that noise is down at the low end. I found a highpass/lowcut problematic.

Good advice! Overprocessing is particularly dangerous when done without good monitor speakers or good (= reasonably flat sounding) headphones.
@MichaelW1980randoms

You made some good points. That being said tho: I have more mistakes to avoid: 5) People don’t have a decent pair of headphones. If your headphones or speakers are crappy, you cannot hear all the mistakes you make when recording or postprocessing your audio. 6) People don‘t listen to their mix. Way too many people don’t do post and even if they do: they don’t listen to the outcome.
@biteme263

Another mistake people make is is eqing or fixing audio for their expensive, accurate monitoring headphones when 99 percent of the people are not using something like that. Probably sounds awesome for you but sounds like crap for everyone else using speakers or headphones with different eq curves. Like ALJ said it isn't a bad idea to have a few pairs of headphones around or listening to it on speakers to make sure its good. Professional engineers use very accurate and flat headphones but they know what they are hearing and how to mix for it. They understand it will sound different when they are finished.

I feel that nowadays people make their audio too quiet because they use stupid windows effects like loudness equalization, this also applies to Netflix and some video games like Depth, GTA V and Six Siege which pisses me off big time. This was a great video, simple and straight to the point.

I understand the Netflix thing also in some movies (That new Harry Potter one with Newt Skymander or what ever the awkward guy that comes to America, his vocals were so low I couldnt understand anything in the movie theater) as for the Netflix thing, I know 3 languages right now and I cant tell you how many times listening to a netflix show or anime that is dub and it isnt in english but in another language, the audio for those dub vocals are so damn low its pointless plus super bad translations. Seriously who ever is in charge of the audio and the translation is getting paid to do nothing at all

My initial setup was gonna cost well over £300. A reality check and a number of podcastage videos later, my mic setup cost me no more than £130. Behringer xm8500, scarlett solo, D' Addario xlr cable and an innogear boom arm with pop filter. Might need to get a 3.5 to 6.35 adapter for direct monitoring but that costs about £2. Would still be under £130!

This was very interesting. One point you made was that people should research different mics and their attributes and assess what issues the user will have in their own recording situation. What I think would be really useful is to go into more depth regarding how to do that research. Obviously buying a dozen mics and trying them would be good but pretty expensive. Those starting out are often buying a lot of gear in one go and just don't have the budget to buy extras for testing. A tutorial on how to find the best mic would be very useful. Thanks.

Many decent stores that sell audio gear will let you come in and try a few out to help make up your mind. However IF you do go this route, once you find a setup that works, please buy it from THAT store instead of going online to save a few bucks. Example: I bought a Sennheiser E835 off eBay recently for a silly price but wasn't sure it was authentic (lots of fakes out there). So I went to local music store (big chain) and tried one out of the box and the one I had was genuine. Since I'll be needing at least 3, I bought my second one there at the store. Was it more than what I would have paid on Amazon? Yes, but you're also paying for the service. If you aren't willing to pay for that, then these stores go away

As usual, great advice, straight to the point. Regarding overprocessing, I would say it is not just OVERprocessing - it can be almost ANY processing that is done without proper monitor speakers and virtually any headphones. (Unless compensated with some calibration solution like Sonarworks Reference.) If the monitoring gear is not linear, the end result will sound better than the unprocessed audio on one's own gear, but probably worse than the unprocessed audio with everything else, because the processing is finetuned to compensate for the weaknesses of one's own speakers or headphones (or headphone amps). I believe that's why it is generally better to apply less processing rather than more.

I enjoyed this video. I started watching about two weeks ago because I'm in the market for an XLR mic and I'm confused. I see that everyone has an AT2035 that I come across and I personally love the Shure SM7B because of what can be done using a Cloud Lifter and how the audio sounds in general. I know the price difference is huge, but I'm a believer that "you get what you pay for". My mic is going to be used for my live streams on Twitch.TV. I've currently bought a Behringer Composer Pro-XLR and a Behringer XENYX X1222USB. I'm saving the mic for last because I know it's going to be the most important part of the puzzle and I want a mic that is going to be great and last for years to come. Any input or advice would be amazing @Podcastage

I have noticed that it does sound a ton better than it use to when i keep it closer to me as i dont have to have the gain up. fact my setup runs at low gain and i come in louder than my gameplay/background music. it is rather nice so i was doing 3 of the 4 bad things. i have never processed my audio mainly as i dont have the know how lol.

What you need are broadband absorbers with a linear absorption curve to obtain a natural sound and evenly lower the reverberation times. Basotect is quite popular (at least in my region), but very expensive. However, thicker panels of mineral wool should be fine for most purposes. The thicker the layer, the more you are able to absorb the lower end (which is also part of female voice to some extent). Simple foam is bad for acoustic treatment since it is mainly damping the higher frequencies. If you add too much of it, your voice will sound really muffled. Thats why you use thicker broadband absorbers to evenly treat the frequency range as a whole. The first step would be to treat the initial reflections coming from the flat surfaces (mainly the walls) around you / your microphone. That should kill most of the echo and give you a cleaner sound. www.acousticmodelling.com/porous.php

I have no sound treatment in the recording room, but there is little noise from outside/fans, etc. If I go for an XLR and/or condenser mic then I will require an audio interface (preamp/processor)? If I choose a dynamic mic then I don't need the noise removal hardware, but the sound probably won't be 'quite' as good (USB vs XLR)?

Hi, When I'm using my mic to talk with people on Discord, I tend to move a lot and the mic goes a bit far from my mouth. I'm currently using a Behringer c1u, and when I get a bit far (less than 2 feet away tho) it barely picks up anything. -27dB, 100% on windows, 30cm away from the mic... You're yelling at the microphone. So every microphone sounds good because you are so loud that any amp noise or background noise is WAY lower than your voice. If I yelled at my phone and recorded it (avoiding breathing on it with a mesh or something) it would sound the same as your shit videos... Talking like a normal human a few feet or even 10 feet away from another normal human being doesn't require the screaming this guy is doing. Joe Rogan isn't screaming and he does well. But his mics are very expensive. "SM7B"

I agree with everything except for the eq. With the overprocessing part, I think the eq sounded alright but of course the compression and noise gate were out of whack. I've kinda always enjoyed that slightly boomy+treble high voice that gives a voice a bit of a more intimate feel, ya know? Don't really know how to describe it. It doesn't have to be 100% natural.

Having the wrong kind of microphone. A condenser picks up a lot more sound and room noise. I use a dynamic cardoid and it is a cleaner sound. Using normalize in your software LAST STEP is a critical step. If you don't have any plug ins for audio, it sounds flat, too. Common problem is bobbing your head and getting off mic.

You’re 100% right. One thing you didn’t mention (maybe it’s trivial?) is that when people watch TV and don’t see a mic in the shot, it’s because the studio is using a high quality shotgun mic. If you’re not using a shotgun and/or don’t know what you’re doing with a shotgun, skip it. It’s fine to have a mic in frame in the video. Especially if you’re using a dynamic mic or your condenser mic is a small diaphragm/small capsule mic (e.g. the Blue Yeti) you need to get your mouth close to it.

I believe they do have a noise removal algorithm, because very often I hear no noise at all when different youtubers are testing microphones and want to demonstrate the self-noise.

I want to add this on second problem: Mic is too close to mouth. It's usually depends on mic type but I hate it when people use their condenser mics 1-2 inch close to their mouth. I feel something like somebody talk to me right on my ear. Don't mind me but you're also using your mic too close to me. 8-10 inch distance with little bit more gain must be ideal and natural. Other than that, I appreciated your work. All your videos are so helpful and informative.

Your advice is sound, and I have noticed it with people trying to copy PewDiePie and such but don't realize how different everyone's audio setup can be. Looking forward to more tips!

What about acoustically treating the room? Get the best rig you possibly can, and record in your bathroom. There's nothing you'll be able to do with it in post to save it. IMO, your recording space is the #1 most overlooked problem with youtubers.

I've also seen your video on « gain » but I was wondering... Is there a way to get the same voice volume without amplifying in post ? You know if with the same gear your distance is not the same from the mic... and you want to adjust the sound to have the same audio level for all your podcasts ? Thank you so much if you have the will and time to answer... Otherwise I'll check your videos if it comes up in a faq ++
