Planned obsolescence. Car brands are partially to blame on this since the olden days. They make new cars with more features that makes your old car look unnecessary (even though it's still pretty much usable and very much viable for the coming decades) so you buy a new car to not feel like you're left behind anymore by your fellows. Car guys with grease on their elbows or a basic understanding of keeping a car in good shape don't fall for this mental trap much, but regular people and normal car owners do.

My fully built up Toyota Celica was written off. That car was my baby. I got it at 20k miles, it was at 150k when some drunk cretin slammed into me because he decided that on roundabouts you drive straight over the centre and T bone someone. The insurance didn’t let me have it back. (uk insurance laws are shite) I could’ve repaired it as I’m a mechanic. But they decided that it was completely dead. I was devastated and they paid me far less than the car was worth. I didn’t take a loan to buy a replacement, I went to my local scrap yard and purchased the first running car I found for £300. That’s my current car, a 20 year old automatic Volvo. I’m saving up for a new car but the fact is I refuse to go into debt just to have a nice car.

This is what people should do in the US. But no, we all go out and buy a brand new car we can’t afford when something happens with the current car. Or we get bored of the current car. I work for a bank in the corporate office and I see people getting their cars repossessed weekly because they fail to make payments. Part of that is they all buy cars they can’t afford in the first place. There is nothing wrong with driving a basic Volvo, Toyota, Honda, etc. Until you can afford the car you want. As an adv Motorcycle traveler, I look forward to every tire change, because you can always try a completely new set of tires, depending on where you plan to ride. Proper tires are definitely the answer. When me and the wife were ready to trade in a car, we would put new tires on it, The trade in value would go up to surpass the cost of tires. This was in 90s, and early 2000s. So there is that.

I am related to people of the first type, though non enthusiast. I used to own a chrysler 300m, very reliable to me(just annoying to work on), but then I switched to a grand prix GXP(half-stupid, but I can afford it at least) and sold the 300m to my sister, who did not like to do oil or tire changes and had to be forced to drive another car or take rides until her front suspension got wrecked in a crash caused by, guess, a tire unbeading(wheels were bad, but they were good when I had them) and she spun into a ditch. granted, my move to my car isnt smart, but I honestly plan to make it more reliable anyway(only problem is a small trans leak), and it is an LS engine still(though a niche FWD one). even had all tires swapped with half a year and basic engine maintenance.

I got an 89 Accord last year for $100 that wasn't running... Alright, new battery, new tires, new window crank mechanisms. All, including the car, came around to $1,600. I feel like everyone needs to own an old car to gain some degree of understanding of wear and tear and how you can properly fix it so when you have the car that you have always wanted, you can do what you need to in order to take care of it.

I 100% agree with your points, but I have a specific issue in my way about fixing a vehicle that is just making my problem make sense to me. Since May of 2022, my vehicle has had a bad transmission. I waited nearly 6 months with my vehicle in the shop for them to get a new transmission in to replace it before I had to have the vehicle back under the stipulation that as soon as they got the transmission in, they would call me to let me know so they could finally replace it. I've never received a call from them and have determined they probably won't even bother. So now I have a vehicle with a bad transmission that is now outside the warranty date and I either have to pay for it out of pocket, or just have to trade it for a new vehicle. The problem is, if I keep it, and I do get the transmission replaced, I'm now aware that this vehicle is prone to transmission problems and that it may just happen again.

I bought a 16 sorento in 2018 with 30k on it. Paid it off September of last year. Two weeks into November I dropped it off for its 3k oil change. Mechanic left me a couple of texts and a voicemail. One of the texts was a link to an article on the issues an owner can expect. It was like a check list for everything I had go wrong. This latest problem was burning oil. He said I dropped it off 2qts low. I was so disappointed. I had the intent of taking that car as far as I could go, didn’t realize that was two months after payoff and only up to 110k. The value of the car was going to be less than the eventual repair cost of replacing the engine. So I got what I could out of it for selling it (more than I could get trading in) and used that as a down payment on a 24 Corolla. It’s even cheaper to pay off than the Sorento was, cheaper to fill up too. Biggest challenge I’m having is adjusting to how smooth the cvt is.

I'm into cars, but I'm gonna keep driving my Camry until a) it needs repairs that are too costly, b) it gets wrecked, or c) I've already bought a house for my family *AND* have enough money saved to buy something better (or at least enough for a sizable down payment). I derive roughly zero joy from driving it, but it'll get me to work every day without costing a small fortune in gas and upkeep.

I fell into the second category, because the '03 civic I had as a first car was leaking oil out of every surface. Had a blown head gasket, had stripped valve cover bolt threads in the cylinder head. Overheated multiple times. My thing was, I would do the work, but I didn't want to tie up my parent's car port lol. So, I sold it, and got a '19 civic Si. Even though I wanted to upgrade to an 03 SiR hatch or Si coupe...

I still have the 1993 Toyota T100 my parents bought a year before I was born. I’ve been learning to keep it maintained because I’ve gotten attached to it and also out of spite of the government, the auto industry, and stupid normies who trade in every 3-5 years. I just recently did my first timing belt replacement on it solo as well as replacing the shocks with Bilstein 4600s, putting new brakes (pads/shoes), calipers, and drums on, new water pump and thermostat, and even replaced the old copper contact spark plugs from 2002 with Denso Iridium Twin-Tip spark plugs. And also I replaced the distributor wires with NGK low-resistance mag wire cables. Ran just fine in -11 temps recently. Oh, and it’s an 8ft bed with manual transmission and 4WD.

I remember with my old buick, 1999 and had 450k miles on it, the transmission started to go out on it. Note, I also only paid $1k for it and had drove it around for 3 years. Within the month I decided that it wasn't worth it to get a new transmission, and I bought a newer used car. Best decision I ever made, ontop of keeping consistent maintenance on the vehicle so it runs as smooth as possible. In fact I'm in the process of getting the parts to replace the rear brakes and rotors.

I am one of those people who keeps driving his cars. I bought my current daily driver (2001 Ford Mondeo manual with 2.0 Mazda engine) second hand in 2009 for €7200. 15 years later, I still think it's a waste to replace it, even though I want something more modern and faster. And it's too old and worn down to invest into tuning, especially because the current market value of the car is about €800. It's just that even though it needs the occasional repair, it's cheaper and more reliable to keep it than buying something else. Tires, brakes, and oil/filter replacements are things you need to do on every car. Whether it's new, or an old sh*tbox. So replacing a spring or a brake caliper once in a while is a lot cheaper than replacing the car. I do admit that if the clutch dies (still original at 282.000km) it's probably time to say goodbye.

i bought my first car a year ago with 29 years, bought my wife's daily (kia rio 2014, 60.000km, hatchback 5 doors 1.6 gdi) I always used bicycle and the public transportation, here in Seoul it does not make much sense to commute to work on a car, however since then and prior, had to get my license, so got hard into sim racing on VR, got good VR and hardware to play around, and started to enjoy it, I mostly drive it at night or go to some mountains, but I have been so itchy to do something to it despite not having money for it, I started the entire detailing thing, enjoy washing my car etc, then did some insulation in the doors, it must have 100 to 120hp, I am not sure about laws here to mod your car but I would like to add some power, more for the acceleration than total speed, also car tires have a very good amount of thread, but I am searching for when the time comes to get good quality set of wheels, I am not sure about if the platform its good to mod it or not, but I would like to keep it until 400.000km and I done 10.000 in the last year, so I hope I can have some fun with it, I would love some RWD but its just not justifiable price at this point in my life, if I had a lot of money definitely I would get a 911 or even a good mini, I like hothatches, of course corvette and mustangs are beautiful but not sure about practicality in terms of parking and go under the radar

First car, 87 Jetta GL... lasted a year Second car, 91 Cougar LS... lasted 2 years third vehicle, 99 Dakota sport... lasted ~16-17 years current vehicle 14 Frontier SV... 5 years in October Bought all of them used. First two were around a decade old. Second two were both about 5 years old when I got them. Off the top of my head, I think the grand total is around $30k (just the purchase price). With half of that being the Frontier I have atm. Obviously none of these are performance vehicles, but that is half the point. The better part of 30 years of driving for 30 grand. I could have had a second car for the weekends, but my interests lie elsewhere. addendum: Just had to shell out $1500 on a new set of Goodyear tires for the Frontier a month ago or so. Yeah, that is 10% of what I paid for the truck years ago. But at the rate I drive, they will end up getting replaced due to age, not wear and in my experience, they age a lot better than cheap tires. If the rot doesn't take it first that is. (Rot is what took my Dakota... I miss that truck.) edit: I am willing to skimp on some parts. E.g. had to replace the windshield in my Jetta. Jetta was a West German one, but the Mexican made windows fit just fine, only difference being that the mirror was mounted on the windshield of the Mexican built ones, so it had that little black mounting spot and it needed a different seal around the edges. That and it cost about half as much. Not willing to do the same with tires.

Im a huge believer in avoiding financing a car AT ALL COSTS. If you have to go cheaper or used to afford the whole cost upfront then go cheaper. You can get decent deals on a relatively new car with good miles and good condition if you're smart and shop around. I bought my used elantra (yeah, laugh it up) over a year ago. The only major thing that's been done was a front wheel bearing that went bad and besides that I've done is oil changes, new air filter, changed the spark plugs out and bought it a set of winter tires and rims. 25,000km absolutely trouble free. Even if something catastrophic happens I really didn't pay that much for it and I've been able to save money while owning it so I would have no trouble getting another car tommorrow if I had to.

I think a common issue majority still believe is … new vehicles will last longer than they do… With all the electronic gizmos new vehicles have , that will effect the other issues of the vehicle. Regardless of good maintenance , electrical issues will arise within 10 years. And then they give up.

The changing tires thing is wild. My example is my mountain bike. Got the bike and tires in like 2000, and just replaced them like 3 months ago. They weren’t flat or bald still but I got a whole tune up. And cause I knew the shop owner pretty well I got the whole tires and tune up for 300 bucks. Only thing I ruined was my gears and they didn’t change properly.

I've done the math. It would be cheaper to fix my 04 impala than it would be to buy a different vehicle. New fenders and rockers are a grand total of $500 for the metal. I'm a body guy so no labor cost. Idk paint cost yet. My engine has over 250k on it but i could swap it for the supercharged 3.8 v6 easily. Just rebuild a junkyard one that runs just fine or buy a 135k mile one and rebuild it for maintenance sake. My car is 3k max and all the parts come out less than that. That car could last me years more so i might as well

I feel like some, but definitely not all people who chase speed and flashyness, have a maturity problem; they never grew past their teenage boy racer dreams, and don't actually have a passion for driving and appreciating their cars. They just want more and better for ego purposes, it's about them and how they look, and not the car. THOSE are the car guys that suck.
