One aspect to the Walking Bass Blueprint course that you should mentiion is that you will be working on your note reading skills as you play the included etudes. So you are actually learning 2 things at the same time!

Quick observation ,the first walking bass line example to me was more to the root or closer or centered to the root of the melody, the next examples were always hanging out on the edge or just drifting off the melody or just outside wanting to slide right back in, I love all this as I’m Still trying to Learn all this and jazz , btw you’re an amazing teacher, I love all your videos, thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us all. 🙏

Hi Joe. Thanks for another awesome video. I wonder what chord do you play for G7.
@JoeHubbardBass

Thanks. The chord voicing I'm playing is a G7(b13) with Eb, F & B low to high.

Another key to perfect bass lines is that you must get your facial expression just right, just like how he does it in 1:15 4:17 et al

This approach seems somewhat contradictory to the idea of linear ascending and descending lines over a number of measures which others seem to espouse when it comes to walking lines.

Absolutely- notice how I'm debunking those common myths often espoused by people who can't play jazz...just saying.

I don’t agree that all the notes have to be full duration to swing or sound right. I think if you play like that always -it sounds mechanical. Sure, legato most of the time but occasionally putting in a triplet or dotted crotchet brings it alive and swinging. Just my opinion folks.

It doesn't matter if you're adding triplets or dotted quarter notes, everything should still be phrased at the full duration. If anything is phrased too short, the bass line will sound like a polka- not a jazz line.

@@JoeHubbardBass So either I misunderstood or you were not clear. The impression I got was that you were saying that you had to play crotchets (1/4 notes) all the time. I did not realise that you meant playing legato ie no rest notes and base the phrases on triplets. My mistake perhaps but thanks for posting whatever.

@@jazzman1954 No, I didn't mean that but in the examples in this video I'm only demonstrating quarter notes. That's the starting point because a lot of guys try to throw in all these triplets, but the quarter notes aren't played well so it doesn't end up swinging. Tempo is also important here because if the tune is really fast, you don't want to play a bunch of triplets. I do cover all of this in my course, The Walking Bass Blueprint. Topics such as skips, triplets, broken time and pedal points are all covered throughout the course.
