Guys, i'm coming from another sport "longdistance longboarding" and i've been looking at the free skate to put in my backpack when i can't bring my boards. So far there's a lot of video including yours that says "yes you can cruise with them" but there's very little footage of it. Now it's not an issue anymore and i might go for my first freeskates and that'll totally be JMKs. Thanks a lot for all this free content !

Good timing on this one, as I've been trying to go longer distances lately. I notice sometimes my pumping is more efficient than others. Definitely going to work on letting my body motion do more of the work to try to take some effort off my legs. Luckily haven't had much arch pain, but maybe shoe in-soles for support might help with that (skate shoes tend not to have much arch support). Keep up the good content!

Glad this video was made because I've been on these cheap skates, but when I get my new ones. I want to start doing longer rides when my comfort and skills get better. This video was pretty helpful regarding that. I'm guessing it took time to build up to a 12 mile ride as well
@jmkride

Oh yeah, it definitely takes time to build up that endurance! Compare it to running or working out… and in a similar way to those, you have to keep at it. As for the cheap skates vs JMKs, you’ll immediately notice how much it affects the ride. Glad this video helped, and good luck with your distance rides 🤙

Yes thats what i wanted to tell you. I just encovert Freeskates a few Weeks ago and definetly wanted try them because i loved my Snakeboard back in the Days. I ordered some and while i was waiting i watched more Videos and i get a little bit tired from watching Peoples Feet. There seem to be just Tutorials for beginner or crazy technical Tricks were People also stay in a small Area. Videos where People just vibing around or Downhill like Snowbaoarding on Asphalt etc. are much harder to find wich is a bit pity because this looks just awesome. Two People skating arround and film each other. I would definetly watch this and i think Beginner or interessted People see better what they can get out of it because not Everybody is that intressted in Tricks. Just wanted to share my View. Thanks for your Videos especialy the Transportation one 👍

hi, I'm very happy for all the content that this channel has bring up, in a Chinese channel I run into the usage of different muscle groups, that maybe helps for long distance ride, the beginners used to use the inner thigh for propeling, there's a technic inclining forward and using Major front muscle groups of the thigh to propel, or leaning back using Major back thigh muscles group to propel, switching from leaning forward and backward using the muscles that we are used to walk, instead of inner thigh muscles. hopefully anyone can understand what I'm saying.

I find using no sole shoes is very helpful for your feet to get more planted on the skates. Xero brand shoes are pretty nice. I've never experienced arch pain thanks to this, but I've been walking no sole shoes for a while. On the flip side, I get initial arch pain when using inline rollerblades, which solves itself after doing an initial rest (I get the initial pain even with quality hockey sole support).

I just put in an order for a Kahuna Big Stick land paddle, which are generally used more with longboards. I figure it'll help with learning to ride switch, but also to use other muscles to give the legs a break when going long distance. Have you guys tried freeskates with land paddles yet? It might open up even more possibilities.

@@jmkride I used to do competitive dragonboating so I'm an expert at paddling. I tested it out with a big branch yesterday and I think it's definitely possible on both sides and/or with 180. It'll give the inner thigh muscles a little break because it takes time to build up endurance there. The inner thigh muscle is generally pretty weak. In the past martial arts schools would have students do the horse stance for a few hours and possibly with another person standing on you, but most people generally only can do a few minutes at first.

Alright, here's the lowdown on freeskating with landpaddles. I used to compete in canoeing so I'm pretty comfortable with the paddle, which uses your entire body from legs to rotating the core. You can definitely use the paddle and as someone who is 5ft8" I actually like the max height setting on my Big Kahuna Adjustable Stick because I like to let gravity make the paddle grab the pavement as much as possible (you want to avoid using your arms to push although land paddling inevitably requires more of the arms than on water). Paddling with the paddle going in front of you is definitely doable, but you lose out on power if your lead foot is sideways. It feels weird initially, but you need to be able to comfortably switch angles of the lead foot to point the direction you're going, and back sideways whenever you need to. This will take time, and your balance will depend more on your back foot. I found that I could maintain my time on freeskates more, but unless you can stand on freeskates forever, you still need to build endurance on the legs. One thing that will help is that you can grab more pavement by aiming the paddle more in front of you, and pull the paddle outwards in a way that avoids hitting your feet. The other major thing about landpaddling on freeskates is that it's harder to switch sides for the paddle unless you're more comfortable with the lead foot pointing the direction you're going in instead of sideways (allows more flexibility in core rotations). This will feel weird since we're not used to putting the lead foot a different angle, but it's similar to your stance if pushing on a skateboard. This is where my personal preference would be to learn to ride switch instead, which would allow you to paddle the other way while keeping the paddle in front. That way you can get an upper body workout on both sides of your body's core muscles. Note that the paddle itself, I find is not too useful to learn the balance points in case you want to ride switch. This is something you have to spend time grinding out on terrain with a decline. It's well worth it to learn if you like land paddling and going long distances. I recommend ride switch on cruisers/longboards too for long distances. Finally, going uphill on a land paddle while freeskating is not easy. Here, I would just use flow pump with the legs and stop paddling altogether. Make sure to carry the paddle in a way that won't hit people as you're rotating your body. Conclusion: if you ever felt that freeskates didn't work out your upper body enough, I highly recommend getting a tall land paddle, and learning to ride switch so you paddle both sides. Optional skill to learn would be to change angles of your lead foot so you can transfer more power to the paddle. It's easier to land paddle on a skateboard though, but it's more of a workout on freeskates since you're constantly engaging muscles to balance with each leg.

So it's not just me that gets the arch pain? My route usually involves some stretches of fairly rough surfaces - and grit at this time of year :( - which definitely makes it worse. I did wonder whether choice of shoes might also make a difference. Any thoughts on that?
@jmkride
2 жыл бұрын
Shoes can definitely be a factor. Everyone has a different preference so there really isn't an "ideal" shoe. It's what works for you. Distance riding may work better with a more padded shoe while trick riding may use a thinner sole.
