Clarification: Shock is systemic low BP. Not necessarily vasodilation. Vasodilation is just one of the many possible causes of Shock. Septic Shock and Anaphylactic Shock result in systemic vasodilation, therefore low BP. Cardiogenic and Hypovolemia cause Shock, or systemic low BP, by other mechanisms. 🤙🏽

Thinking ahead, what do you think some possible results of shock can be? Why might shock be so devastating for patients? Grind on friends

I just graduated and got into a residency program for ICU. Do you have advice for the basic things I should brush up on before I start in March ? And what things I should practice ?

It sounds like you're going into a residency program where they are going to be taking you through the ins and outs of critical care to prepare you for placement in an ICU. So you should get the bulk of what you need in that program. But it sounds like you're trying to be proactive which is fire. I would begin brushing up on cardiac (a&p, EKGs, Hemodynamics [preload, afterload, contractility], myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, etc.), pulmonary (a&p, adventitious lung sounds, ARDS, pneumonia), endocrine (Diabetes Mellitus, DKA, Diabetes Insipidus), and Pharm (Anti-HTNs, Vasoactive Drips [epinephrine, norepinephrine, phenylephrine, vasopressin, etc.], Inotrope Drips [milrinone, dobutamine, dopamine], Opioid/Sedative Drips [morphine, dilaudid, fentanyl, midazolam, propofol, dexmedetomidine, ketamine]. Have fun and good luck!
