Or: "Growth Through Speaking". I know that stuttering can make speaking situations embarrassing and awkward so on this video, Franky Banky will help me demonstrate four ways to living
the life that you want in spite of your stuttering!
1. Tell people that you stutter
Many people don't know what stuttering is when they see or hear
it. Our problem isn't stuttering. It's lack of awareness of stuttering in the world. And we are the only ones who can spread awareness.
Having a sense of humour always helps, too. It creates a friendlier connection.
2. Practice keeping natural eye contact
I know it can be hard to keep eye contact when you stutter,
and it can feel safe to look away, but making eye contact creates
a connection with the person you are speaking to.
3. Get out of your stuttering comfort zone as often as possible
Try to stutter openly in different speaking situations. For example, asking a stranger for the time; instead of sending a text message to someone, make a phone call; and ordering food without pointing at a menu (I've done that myself many, many times!).
I know all of this sound scary, too, but the more you expose yourself
to fears, the less scared you will be. Even to the point of giving
a presentation in front of a group! This happened to me. If I can do it. You can do it, too!
4. Hang out with others who stutter
You will feel better hanging out with others who understand exactly
what you have been going through. You can also share tips and
celebrate each step out of your comfort zone! Soon, stuttering won't feel so bad as before.
You can meet other people who stutter all across social media networks and on forums like Stutter Social (stuttersocial.com) and offline at stuttering support groups in your area and stuttering conferences all around the world.
I can attest that the global stuttering community is made up of an awesome, friendly, and helpful bunch of people!
To reiterate, all of these can seem scary at first, but after a giving it a try only a few times, it won't feel scary any more.
The problem isn't stuttering. The problem is the lack of stuttering awareness. We must all do our part in spreading stuttering awareness.
Also, it's not how you say that is important. It's what you say.
I have a book all about this with more Franky Banky comics! Check it out at stutteringiscool.com.
