My brother and I are both ASD, and my brother was non-speaking. I was seven, he was almost five. His first word was his name. Even I, at seven, remember every detail: the location, the sound he said it, the smells, what we were eating, the weather outside, the layout of the furniture, our reactions, the look on his face. Im in my 30's now, and nothing in my life has ever come close topping that feeling. Best memory was hearing the voice of someone I thought I would never hear. I still cry thinking about it.

I felt this so deeply! My son is autistic too. He was 3.5 when, over the course of about a week and a half, became completely non verbal autistic. His speech/vocabulary was gone, could no longer do any kind of pretend or imaginative play with toys, could no longer do puzzles, stopped making eye contact and responding to his name, could no longer use any kind of eating or writing/coloring utensil, etc. Prior to that, he had always been cognitively advanced. When he first spoke again, his first word was mama and I completely lost it. He is 11 now, he'll be 12 in a few months, and now he has such a vast vocabulary, he typically speaks in 2-3 word sentences, but he can list things for minutes at a time! Like, his Christmas list for example. Its so incredible! And, he can type anything he wants. He uses that to communicate a lot of things he has trouble vocalizing.
