This is genuinely such an inspiring video. Despite not knowing you IRL, when I was seeing you handle the N1 JLPT and having natural conversations with people in VR, I found myself grinning ear to ear with second-hand pride. For the tremendous progress you've made so far, congratulations Liva! Though I doubt I'll be at the same level 3 years from now, I don't really mind because I now have definitive proof that learning Japanese can be as enjoyable as you want it to be, even if the results are slower because of it. In fact, I now find myself as indifferent as ever towards to the questions of "when will I be good", "am I losing out on efficiency", and "should I be better than I am by now", because I know that it will all come in time so long as stay consistent, so I can just kick back an enjoy what I'm doing with the methods I prefer using. Thank you for this Liva, and best of luck with the remainder of your journey.

it's a very commendable effort but Duolingo isn't the best option for learning Japanese. I would suggest stuff like Todai for reading practice and Satori reader for both reading and listening. As for vocab i found 2 simple apps called Kanji Study and Japanese Vocabulary that help a bunch and go level by level. Personal preference though. I have not done sentence mining yet since I am simply not good enough but planning to next year in Summer.

However, i've been sticking with learning japanese for about 8 months now, which is huge for me and i honestly don't think about giving up anymore. I might not be as disciplined as i could be (on average i only learn like 30 minutes a day and quite inconsistent), but i'm having fun and i'm slowly progressing forward. i've been practicing using mostly anki for about a year at this point (and watching your videos on this for even longer), and while i've definitely felt improvement during that time there have been many situations where i'd encounter a word (or even many) in something i was watching or reading that i just completely didn't understand. i've wanted to avoid spending money on my learning as much as possible as i wasn't really sure how far i would be willing to go, but seeing how well you were able to manage yourself in those conversations on vrchat reminded me of why i started in the first place: to simply be able to talk to people from another culture that live vastly different lives from me. later this month i think i'll purchase a year of migaku and start using a more consistent schedule for studying. thanks for making these, they've done lots to help me keep motivated. pardon me writing way too much here.

Also It's super interesting to me that you haven't really made reading a focus in your studies, and that it's all working out in the end. Maybe the negative aspects just doesn't come through in the video, but I admire that you pushing back against some of the despairs of language learning. For me I to this day still get a lot of thoughts of "I'm not working hard enough" or "Why am I not better at this after so much work" etc. It's something a lot of people need to work on I think in the community. I'd recommend you try a past paper to get a more accurate assessment, but of course only if you care. Also that 3000 hours number for N1 seems way too high lol, I know a couple of people who have passed N1 with 165 and 180 marks respectively who had less than 2000 hours, and I think I'm going to pass as well for the test in two days and I probably have around 1500 hours.

Yet here i am at 535 consecutive days of anki, never having been happier. Watching this video also made me realise i also started really trying to optimize every second of my times something i doubt i'd've done too soon otherwise, especially without having something daily to branch being productive off of. Wah your conversation skills are A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! I aspire to be like you. Like maybe after a couple more months of vocabs, I can slowly add immersion with anime. Actually, I’ve been watching anime (Jap dub and eng sub) for more than 15 years but I only started to learn Japanese about 2 months ago.

I have a question. Around what month did you start immersing? My main goal is to understand anime without subtitles. I was hoping to jump into diving into sentence mining anime after my intensive Japanese class (about 300 hour class).

@@MillenniumVT_Official Its hard to say when exactly I started immersing since I didnt routinely immerse until I started sentence mining, which I started at 6000 words (after finishing the C2k6k deck). Before that I was occasionally immersing, but not a ton, and often even with english subtitles even when I was like 4000 words into the deck, especially when the shows didnt include japanese subtitles.

@@Livakivi Ye i saw your vid about the 6k deck and at the budget channel, you suggested stuff like toggltrack too (whic i started using it and i saw 60+ hours including classes but i haven't updated them all so it might be 100+ hrs now). My current issue is finding a good kanji writing search app because whenever i find a wild kanji out irl and i don't know it (and if it doesn't have furigana), i wanna be able to find a good app to draw it at and search it up. (btw, i used your migaku link to get it too haha)

Maybe one of your previous videos contradict this, but I think it's interesting that you don't focus on output at all and can still understand N1 grammar. Like, I always forget grammar I don't use often and have to guess the meaning. Anyways, epic 45 minute video

Very inspiring to see how much your output has improved. In my own experience learning English, your output catches up real fast once your comprehension is high enough, so this video definitely validates that for me. I passed the JLPT N2 back in July and, since then, have been neglecting my studies quite a bit. Your video gave me the motivation I needed to get back on track. Btw, since you watch a lot of KZitem, do you have any recommendations? My favorite channel is ことラボ, but I haven't been able to find other channels quite like it. I also watch 実況 youtubers like ポッキー and a few vtubers.

I was reading an book in English that was written in 1936 and I was counting all the words that were new to me or that I have heard before but couldn't really come up with a concise definition, so far its around one word per page💀. It's also the first time I have seen the term "boyfriends" earnestly used to mean young male friends and not boyfriends lol. Here are some examples: Epitaph, Approbation, Invalids, Viceroy, Muslin, Prostrate, Forebears.

This was a great video! I feel an almost strange connection watching you progress your japanese improve over time, your almost the sole reason I picked up the 2k/6k deck after completing my first 2k deck. Recently I've been not making new anki cards and just watching instead as is quite laborious to get the cards like I want them, can Migaku be used on local media if I have the subtitle files? If so I want to try it as often making the cards takes longer then watching an individual episode. I really enjoyed the VRChat part of your video, seeing you converse so freely is inspiring to see and "true" endgame if eventually you get mistaken for a native. Recently I've also picked up drawing which you have in the past, and in some ways it may be harder then my japanese studies hah. I hope you're still making videos when I become even half as good as you are ❤

It can! But it only supports mp4 I think, but it has a converter script to make some different video files compatible as well: github.com/migaku-official/migaku-player-converter

I'm currently planning on learning the most common 1000 words, then start to sentence mining until fluency so I can learn words through context, do you think this approach is good? Since you started with learning 6000 words out of context then moved to active immersion and sentence mining
@Livakivi

It's fine as long as you don't mind the comprehension being relatively low at 1000 words

I've just binged the last two videos, and it's awesome that you're still going! Honestly I related to you in the first video, because you said you had tried learning a language before and just lost motivation and gave up; that's exactly what happens to me. I have recently gotten back into learning a language, and seeing that someone like me (who struggled with motivation) is now 4 YEARS into his journey; is insanely inspiring! Thank you for taking the time to document this, and showing us the bad and good side of learning a language. I hope you make a video when you reach that 10 year mark haha

Do you think in the future for videos, since you've already reached quite an impressive level in your language journey, will you do more out there concepts to really show off your skills on a measurable level? I think it would be quite interesting for the series to eventually go and actually take the JLPTS or perhaps meet up with some of your Japanese speaking friends and do irl content. It would be in a much different direction in terms of editing and style but I think it would really give the earlier videos more strength that learning the way you do (or at least the advice in those videos) really end up getting you somewhere. As well as just extra fun content pathways for future videos since I could imagine that perhaps a while after your house renovations series you could live in japan for 6 months or so and talk about if its improved any aspects of your learning in any way as well as just immersion within the culture. I will say though that currently I'm learning Spanish and I've caught up and watched all the videos you have, and your advice feels like its actually gotten me somewhere compared to other videos. I hope that I can become fluent in less then two years but I have enough confidence that I think within a few months I can help other people with learning as well in a much more approachable and realistic way. Thank you for all the hard work you've done and I congratulate you on being a very creative and hard working person. Genuinely an inspiration and changed a little on how I approach learning, which I find super important since I hope to teach one day professionally in some capacity. Also I cant support just much yet at the moment but just know Ill be signing up for migaku and I hope that can help in some way :) keep up the hard work man.
