Dear Labytinth, i am admiring your works always. Could you please help me with lavta tuning? How can i find detailed information regarding this issue? Love and regards from Turkia

The lafta is traditionally tuned la, re, la, re (starting from the high pitched string (la) going down to the low pitched string (re). In other words two perfect fifths separated by a perfect fourth. The high string of the lafta is tuned to the same pitch as the second string of the Turkish oud

@@rossmdaly I am very pleased that you are the one who answered sir. I am a huge fan of yours. My father bought me a lavta after my college graduation because i admired it after seeing your performance with the lavta that Ragıp Akdeniz made for you. Sir actually i need more information regarding the tuning. For example it is tuned DADA but do you call them Re-La-Re-La or Sol-Re-Sol-Re like bolahenk mod? If so, when you play maqam that is La-based(E for bolahenk) like hicaz or uşşak; do you press the first finger at the top strings and 3rd strings for La note? I am not very sure if i explained myself totally i hope i did. Thank you very much

@@hahuya The DADA tuning is what the notes actually are on a piano. In the Turkish system however (bolahenk) we call them Re Sol Re Sol (from high pitch to low). Therefore the first string is Neva, the second Rast, the third Yegâh and the fourth Kaba Rast. To play Hicaz, Uşşak etc. Dügâh, the tonic, is the second degree on the second string (rast)

@@rossmdaly very clear explanation sir thank you very much! Do Greeks use the same bolahenk system or they call piano La as it is? If for example i would like to play Lokasti's dream (i am not sure but i assume that it is hicaz) should i play on piano A or 2nd string second degree(E)? it is my last question thank you very much for your patience and help. And could you please tell me how can i attend your concerts, are all your concerts in Crete? Best Regards

The lavta custom made for me by Ragıp Akdeniz in 1985 however is a very different instrument. It is much bigger than a standard lavta and it uses metal strings and a tuning (from high pitch to low) EBEB.
