WinCo IS awesome. I began doing the bulk shopping a few months ago AND man saving tons on rice, spices, cereals, pet food, pastas. Just go to $1 store and buy storage containers. I reuse my trader Joe's spice containers and grinders for whole spices. RIGHT NOW OUR WINCO IS DOING A GREAT JOB AT CROWD CONTROL AND KEEPING US CALM THAT SUPPLIES WILL NOT RUN OUT. BUT still prepare. I gave a feeling #45 and other govts are not being 100% honest. Or they are honestly clueless.

Some of my super-cheap meals are pinto beans with homemade tortillas, masoor dal (curried red lentils) with rice, chana masala (curried chick peas) with roti (homemade flat bread), split pea soup with homemade whole wheat bread, brown rice and lentil pilaf. All of these can be made with your cheap veg -- onions, garlic, carrots, cabbage, canned tomatoes. I think you will also be more satisfied if you base your main meals on a legume rather than a starch. I see recommendations in the comments for things like vegetable- potato soup, and while they're delicious, they won't keep you satisfied for long. Lentil soup would be better.

I am seriously impressed. Nothing bugs me more than when people do a low budget challenge and it has meat in it? Did you buy any oats? I can't wait to see what you actually make!!!! I would make cabbage casserole. One can of the tomato sauce, half the cabbage, 1/3 cup of rice, add spices such as Italian seasoning and cumin, salt, pepper and add 1/2 cup of cooked lentils instead of meat. Don't forget half an onion and some garlic. Throw it all in the oven at 350 for 90 minutes.

Hi Sarah!... I have watched several of your videos... because I too love to be able to save on costs of food in general. Just a few tips you may find helpful... (as will others too!)... If you have a freezer... (which you clearly are using from some of your comments - you can actually make your food last even better!)... Cheese - grated and zip bag sealed will last extremely well... and is a lot easier to use when making meals!... No need to keep it in a large chunk! You can even use that for sandwiches...if you make pan toasted ones... or melt the cheese under the grill! The vegetables.... should all be processed on the day you buy them!... I live in a hot climate ...and quite frankly this is the only way to ensure that one does not waste food!.... Carrots (unless one is making a salad!) can be sliced, cubed and cut into sticks and frozen in zip lock bags in those shapes.... for variation. Butternut squash can be peeled, cut into 2" rings (or cubed) and frozen. Onions diced or sliced freeze well in bags too!... Cabbage can be shredded and zip lock bagged - lasts for weeks like this - in fact I have used cabbage about 2 months later! Non of the above veg need blanching!... Another great tip - if one has access to fresh herbs... chop up finely... and freeze in separate bags. No compromised flavours occur - and even sprinkled on salad.... from frozen are totally acceptable! (One can use small quantities as you need them ... better still freeze in ice trays and then bag the cubes) Do this also with lemons or oranges if you have a glut or get them for free. You can take out a cube or two at a time! Green Beans need to be blanched in hot water.... cooled and then frozen when cold! But are great for soups, and stews - and even for a side veg. (cook from frozen state!)... Spinach or kale can be boiled - then cooled and water gently squeezed before freezing. Bag in zip lock bags in a tennis ball size You can freeze several in one bag... and take out what you need for a meal. allow to semi defrost at room temp.... and either leave as is... adding to a dish... or fried up in a little oil or butter with seasoning. Or, shredded at this stage and added to soup or a casserole! Roll out your home made pasta dough thinner before cutting up... leave to dry for a few hours on a tray covered with a clean kitchen cloth and sprinkled with a little extra flour (which is not expensive in any case!) can be stored in a glass bottle and used over a week without it spoiling - the extra flour will help to keep it drier! Home made gnocci can be similarly spread after cutting up on a tray.... and sprinkled with a little flour (or semolina flour even better!) pack in flat layers with a bit of either surround wrap or baking paper and freeze in a sealed plastic container. You can make a large batch... and take out what you need for a meal - cook from frozen. You can freeze your crepes rolled up individually on a tray - then packed into plastic containers when frozen. Use what you need for a meal.... allowing them to thaw on a counter a few hours before you need them. They can be used to make filled canneloni too for a savoury version! Cooked pancakes can be frozen in batches too!... Scones and muffins can also be made in batches and frozen. Take out what you need and defost for 20secs in microwave. Pop into an oven (or heat in microwave for 30 secs after defrost!).... Eat immediately! Make up veg and meat stock soups and freeze!

Pasta faglioli would be on the menu. I personally wouldn't have bought any of the animal products (vegan for health reasons). I would have added in some frozen veggies. With a cannor bag of mixed veggies you could make a killer minestrone soup. I could definately make an onion soup with the stuff you have here. I didn't see any broths but with a little time you could make that. I would definately broil the bits and pieces of thebleft over veg and then make a stock out of them. Not sure what your plans are but this would be doable for me alone. As it is I spend about 20.00 a week on me and my son eats part of it. I do have a budget of 40.00 a week averaged (there are some weeks I go over and spend 50 and other weeks I spend 30). I do use instacart right now. So it will varry slightly. Winco is great. I think if you didn't have Winco (I no longer do), you could still do the same thing, just by buying the same foods on a rotation. These are still among the cheapest foods everywhere. The first pay period, you would have a little less variety, since you'd have to buy larger amounts of fewer things. Then, you could add one spice per pay period, one new grain or bean etc. And you'd soon build up a little stash of spices, grains and legumes that would make your meals more interesting, and also give you the better nutrition that comes with variety. Also, not everything is cheaper at a dollar store (canned goods are more expensive), but they often allow you to buy a small amount of a spice mix or condiment or oil, for less than you could at the grocery store. For instance, dollar stores usually have garlic salt and chili powder, which are a big help when you don't have a diverse spice cabinet.
@SarahLovesFood

I heard dollar store spices sometimes add fillers so the quality isn't as good, but I've never bought them so I don't know. Now that Winco doesn't do bulk stuff anymore, I get my spices in bulk at a local Indian market and they're super-cheap. I'd already been going there for some of my more obscure spices and they're a great resource.
@JM.5387

The dollar store quality definitely isn't as good as an Indian grocery or other ethnic market. But sometimes you work with what you've got! Since I have more slack in my budget, I'm usually using Swad brand curry powder and garam masala among other things. But if I had nothing else, I would be really glad for a container of garlic salt to get me through the week.

LOVE Winco! Where's the TEA?!?😱
@SarahLovesFood

I designed the month for someone who's not addicted to caffeine 😂 I figured it's fair because in none of the other $10-week challenges I've seen has anyone taken caffeine into account. I could have afforded a 100-bag box of cheap tea if I hadn't bought the cabbage.

Almond milk is stupid expensive too. I hate that the only sell it in huge containers and then you end up wasting half of it because it goes bad in 7 days they say. It's a joke. It's like they know that you won't drink it all in seven days and they sell it in the big containers despite that. There's only one kind of Paleo cereal that I've found and the only other added thing that I use it for is when I make chai or a smoothie.

We have WINCO where I live and can already tell you it would be less for me. You paid a lot for milk, potatoes, cheese, and eggs.

You should remove no processed food from the title as there is a tonne of processed foods in that hall. Your diary, frozen spinach, tinned tomatoes, peanut butter, oil and flours are all processed foods.

try doing that living in your car ,,It would be impossible ....Too many perishables... And surviving with just one gallon of milk a month is pretty funny milk doesn't last that long i spend about 20 a day and i feed my dog and me... the dog food along is 1.77 dollars a day... Also what do you drink tap water?not in az,,,, You wouldn't survive in Arizona you need to have bottled water of some kind.. i eat about twice a day.. Of course you couldn't keep any of that food because you need a refrigerator... Two bagels with cream cheese for breakfast 4.33 2 Subway sandwiches So I have lunch and dinner about $14 And the sandwich has meat and vegetables ... I'm here mainly because my sister chewed me out saying I'm spending too much money ,,easy for her to say she's living in her home. The only bills I have are minimal, car insurance,gas,food,10x10 storage unit,registration, a po box,yearly dog license, I don't even have a phone no one calls me anyway ,, And I thought I was doing well.Until she tells me I'm spending too much money she spends about what I spend and she's taken care of 2 other people...I'm sure she's lying about some of it ...she's the type that would.. Either way great video if you can do it

This is my groceries per week. 2 onions per month? I don't see the cooking oil on your list.

Oil is about as processed as it gets. Try sautéing in water. Absolutely no reason for cheese or eggs. Seems like a luxury that destroys the environment.

I normally eat a lot of veggies, too. They're expensive, though, so whenever I do extreme budgeting videos like this, I lean more towards grains.

I think 40 per month might be easier to do than 10 per week. Do you have a 99 cent store but sometimes Kroger's or Walmart is cheaper even.

Just look up "Winco" on a map ap and see where your closest one is. They have stores all over the US, but there might not be one near you.
