Hi Alan, today we saw Lazy Days on our holiday trip to the Llangollen on a rented narrowboat. And your channel is one of the reasons we got the idea. 😊So you really have some impact on other peoples life...

Starting to catch up on my vlogs that I have missed recently. Been kinda busy around here but things are settling a bit so back to watching my favorite KZitem channels. It’s nice to see you out and about on the canals again. I did have to smile when you mentioned the cows lying down and they do that when it’s going to rain. My grandfather always said that also. He had a farm and the cows made great weather predictors. It brought back nice memories. Just an FYI, I noticed I was unsubscribed for some reason which I’ve seen other KZitem channels I follow mentioning also. No one can seem to figure it out. So, if you noticed any change in your numbers, involuntary unsubscribing might be occurring.

Hi Mary Jane, lovely to hear from you. You must watch the videos, as and when it suits you but I'm pleased to know you can resume your viewing. I've done quite a lot of cruising recently, as I'm presently publishing my next series. Cows and weather is interesting, do they really sit because it's going to rain? It's what I was brought up with. I've been aware for years about viewers being unsubscribed. I contacted You Tube about it early last year and got standard answers. I can tell from my viewing data that things aren't right, that's why it's virtually impossible to increase subscriber numbers. I think for every 2 new subscribers just less than that get knocked off. People I know, ask why I haven't published recently and I say I publish every week but you've been unsubscribed. Trouble is, you can't let unsubscribed viewers know they've been unsubscribed! All the best.

Hi Alan, I enjoyed your cruise. I hired from North Kilworth wharf in Feb and went to Market Harborough and back, also taking in the Welford arm on our return leg. It’s lovely to see it again. Like you though I also found the long straight after the tunnel very uninspiring. It was lovely the rest of the way though 👍 what was the old boy doing at the start of the vlog 😂 I thought he was going to fall over he was leaning at a funny angle. Have a great week, take care

Hi Paul. I’m glad you had an enjoyable cruise, a tunnel and Foxton Locks add some variety. I think you’re referring to the chap crossing from one side to the other under the tiller arm. My next vlog sees me arrive at Foxton. Best wishes, take care🤠

Morning Alan, lovely to watch your cruise. I think the debate about the best way to refill the stern gland grease is almost like the "jam or cream first, on scones"...never will anybody agree. Whatever works for you, then that's the correct way! Completely agree about the "trompe l'oeil" effect of the canal being on an incline...we saw that in several places. Thoroughly enjoying your cruising series, thank you for sharing...🍷🍷

Morning Steve. I agree, so many different methods. I’ve tried various ways to fill the stern gland greaser, the method I use now was given me by a marine engineer and it works reasonably well for me. So we agree, water can flow uphill😂. Thanks for commenting. Cheers🥂

Narrow boat propeller shaft bearings, often referred to as stern gland bearings, can sometimes allow a small amount of water to leak into the engine bay. This is particularly true for traditional packed stern glands, which use a stuffing box and packing material to create a seal around the propeller shaft. A few drops of water per minute is generally considered acceptable and normal for packed stern glands, as this slight leakage helps to lubricate and cool the packing material. However, excessive water ingress should be addressed, as it can lead to more serious problems, including flooding and damage to the engine bay components. Modern alternatives, such as dripless shaft seals, are designed to minimize or eliminate water leakage entirely. If your narrow boat is equipped with such a seal and you are still experiencing water ingress, it might indicate a problem with the seal that requires attention. In summary: - A few drops per minute from a traditional packed stern gland can be normal. - Dripless shaft seals should not leak, so any water ingress would be a sign of an issue. Excessive leakage from any type of bearing or seal should be investigated and repaired. Source: ChatGPT AI

Thanks for this advice, my stern gland is packed in the traditional way, so I expect it to drip and mostly it does, if it doesn't I think that's odd. There's no serious ingress of water, thanks, so I'm happy with how it is. All the best.

Just leave the greaser lid screwed on, place the grease tube over the hole in the grease tub and screw the handle back up, it will suck the grease in, no need for pushing and pulling. 😊

Thanks for that suggestion, I’m not sure that works for me but will give it a try. The method I use came from a marine engineer, it was simple and effective when he did it, completely filled the barrel.
@user-xw6wj2qh5n

Just a suggestion. an offcut of a plank/floorboard/ any suitable bit of wood wide enough for the purpose, perhaps about 3 ft long with a slot cut in it about 1 ft from the end that allows the greaser handle through , but not the body could be used as a lever. Put the far end under something sturdy such as the underside of the gunnel, a fixed bench or whatever comes to hand, put the greaser into the grease tub and you can push on the longer length of plank with an elbow, knee or foot while having both hands to look after pulling the handle up. The plank would make that side of the operation hands free while also giving a 2:1 lever power advantage. Of course a more elaborate setup could be made that includes a base board, a riser at one end and a hinge for the lever, but a single bit of wood is easier to store between uses.

I can understand where you’re coming from, there seems to be so many ways of packing the grease barrel. The method I showed I learnt from a marine engineer and he was able to well fill the barrel. Any way, it’s an interesting idea, so thanks for that.

How about adding a microphone at the bow to get the ambient sounds?
@MyNarrowboatVenture
4 ай бұрын
That sounds a great idea especially for bowcam footage but for various reasons it would be difficult. The camera does have a built in mic. I spend a lot of time on the audio already, trying to get a consistent sound and it’s not easy.

What! Going down hill on water? Must be your age 😆But no, wait. Maybe it could be the direction of water flow that makes it feel like that, same as going up. idk. Just a thought.
@MyNarrowboatVenture
4 ай бұрын
Water does of course run down hill. But on canals it is level and an optical illusion that you may be going up or down. I don’t believe direction of flow is a factor 😄

@@MyNarrowboatVenture Mm interesting thoughts, An optical illusion, a trick of the eye. An Oasis, or a boat floating on water in the far distance, to believe it is flying above the water. I would have mentioned a ear infection, but you look fit as a fiddle. 😊
