Okay Arch, I´m sorry, but i have to REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE again. If shuriken-weapons would actually fire monomolecular ammunition they would be utterly useless. Sure, the fired discs would penetrate absolutely everything, but they would also be to thin to impart any form of impact on the object they hit. They would pass right through the space between the molecules of a solid atomic-structure and only hit a tiny percentile of molecules dead-on, transmitting any form of energy to them. Regarding this, the worst damage they could do is rupturing cell-membranes, damage that would be nearly instantly mended by the cell itself, or damage DNA or RNA-strands, similar to minor local radiation-poisoning. TL;DR: The worst thing shuriken weapons could do, is make your unborn children autistic. On a second thought, maybe that´s the plan all along.
@maledwarfwarrior
6 жыл бұрын
Maybe the disks are not quite one molecule, but are only a few molecules wide? Monomolecular might be a very rough translation.
@xyxxanx9810
6 жыл бұрын
Well, even if the disks were thick enough to impact on a significant amount of molecules, the cut would be so smooth and narrow, that the van der waals-force would keep the edges of the cut practically glued together. You´d have to hit bone to cause any immediate effect. Also, this would severly lessen the armor-pentrative capabilites of the discs. To achieve any impact as mentioned above the discs would have to be at least 500 molecule-layers thick and if they were to impact armor they´d have to displace molecules in the armor of equivalent thickness. Given that most bodyarmor is made out of materials whose molecules form a crystalline structures, which are quite resistant to compression, the discs would need to carry enough kinetic energy to spread the material apart on the entire length and depth of the cut. A discus the size of a human palm and 500 molecule-layers thick would, depending on the material it is made of, weigh less then a gramm and fired at the rather unimpressive speeds as observed in any in-canon depiction of shuriken-weapons, carry almost no kinetic energy. They would bounce straight off imperial flak-armor after maybe messing up the paintjob a bit. (actually they wouldn´t even mess up the paintjob, the impacts would be so narrow that you´d have to look out for them under a microscope, maybe you could feel a certain roughness on the surface if you were to touch it, all in all probably not the desired effect^^)
@maledwarfwarrior
6 жыл бұрын
There are still ways to make it work. Even without going into 40k's magic, which would actually be reasonable for a gun firing wraithbone, there are plenty of ways to make the disk do more damage without increasing mass or the speed of the projectile. You could superheat it, send it through super-compressed gas to cool it to dangerously low temperatures, irradiate it, make it vibrate a lot to overpower the van der walls force keeping the cut closed. And let's be honest, using highly advanced tech in a highly impractical way to make an impractical weapon work is absolutely something the Aeldari would do.
@xyxxanx9810
6 жыл бұрын
Still a mass-problem, objects without significant mass can´t carry large amounts of thermal engergy. If they were to penetrate, they would either quickly dissipate their heat and even cauterize any minor wounds, if fired from anything but pointblank range they would simply adopt room-temperature due to the air they have to pass through until they reach the target. Vibrations would actually exacerbate the penetration-problems as they would increase the amount of material the discus had to pass through. I can only think of one solution to the problems of penetration and lethality and that would be to make the discs spin at a ridiculous rate. And i mean absolutely ridiculous. Like a few billion rotations per second. This way, the discs could displace any molecules they come into contact with and accelarate them as secondary projectiles throughout the target, which would have a similar effect as a massive amount of gamma-radiation shredding every DNA-strand in the vicinity as the loosend molecules collide with each other. The problem with this however would be thricefold; Any material with the tensile strength to resist the centrigugal forces would also be a superb material for the manufacture of bodyarmor and would have inter-molecular bonds strong enough to resist exactly the kind of abrasive effect the discs would employ. Secondly, the collateral damage inflicted would be absurd and thirdly any mechanism able to impart such a strong rotation on an object would be far more effective at simply hurling a regular projetile towards your target in a linear motion. TL;DR: Straighty-shooty beats spiny-cutty^^

Mono molecular is actually on technologies doorstep. We have already made several mono molecular materials. The industry calls them 2D materials or Meta Materials, but we have already made several, graphene being the most famous so far. If they can find a way to make diamene (2 layers of graphene connected together in a "Cross" pattern instead of the "Hex pattern" of graphene.) then you have a one molecule thick piece of diamond. And, if the Eldar have the capability to make this, which they absolutely should, they not only could make mono molecular ammo made from carbon. One of the most abundant materials in the universe.
@Sleepy_zzzzz
6 жыл бұрын
15:22 You wut m8? Being one molecule thick doesn't say a lot the width of a protein is much thicker than say a sheet of graphene. Also, no, it wouldn't necessarily cut through steel, it would need to have a stronger chemical bond than that of steel. Frankly depending on what it consisted of the air it travels through might rip it apart.

I think another advantage of melee in 40k is that 1. you can actually get in close range of melee and be efficient in it and 2. if your small squad of banshees let's say engages with hundreds of imperial guardsmen, if you stay at a distance you'll have hundreds of lasguns on auto pointing at you, if you can get into melee range, then you'll only have a few guardsmen to deal with while the others can't fire at you or will flee from the carnage. Not to mention even better if it's not an open field and you can hold a small corridor or area so you won't get surrounded.

I always thought that the mono-molecular edge represents the edge and not the full projectile, similar to how the Dark Eldar have mono-molecular blade vanes and the like. in other words, the actual edge is ridiculously sharp, but the rest of the weapon is standard thickness, meaning that they can cut through almost anything, but it's the width of the actual projectile/blade that causes the real damage. They share so many other similarities it always made sense to me. >

15:30 Incorrect. Steel does not have a "molecular" structure. There is no such thing as a "molecule" of steel. All steel is an amalgam or Iron, Carbon, and a mix of other metals. Splitting a block of steel still requires considerable kinetic energy and momentum. Sure it would do nasty things to flesh and other mostly water materials (due to how water works) but I doubt that such a disk could even reliably cut bone due to it's absurdly low momentum. (It may be absurdly fast, but a monomolecular disk will, by definition, weigh almost nothing resulting in moderate kinetic energy but shitty momentum and thus shitty penetration. Something you would know if you studied terminal ballistics at all. This is a common problem with ammunition manufacture as light bullets that do a lot of damage on their way in tend to have shitty penetration due to dumping their energy early on in their impact. This is why "armor piercing" ammunition is far preferable to be shot with than most hunting rounds. The "armor piercing" ammo will just make a small hole a couple of millimeters wide with minimal hydrostatic wounding effects around the injury. It's kind a like being stabbed with a really long icepick. Most lead core ammunition will almost literally explode due to the impact effects causing the projectile itself to distort and shred causing little bits of it to fly everywhere and cause secondary trauma. This is the primary wounding mechanism of most modern rifle rounds (pistol ammo just doesn't have enough kinetic energy in reserve to shred the same way.) On a side note: You confuse "monomolecular" with "monoatomic" 3nm is 30 angstroms. That's not much smaller than the effective diameter of a glucose molecule. (10 angstroms)

Modern Yankee, his post does not describe the disadvantages of obsidian scalpels: 1) Price. Every obsidian scalpel must be made by hand from a suitable piece of rock. As a result it costs much more than a steel one. One source claims that the difference in price is 100x. 2) It's very susceptible to sideways pressure and it will indeed shatter if surgeon pushes it in a wrong direction. Depends what you mean by mono molecular, really; a) really flawless diamonds could be fairly substantial molecules and b) they're magnetically accelerated, so while they'll go through cloth and wraithbone well, with their negligible mass, the eddy currents in metal or carbon fibre would stop them pretty quick, plus their lack of mass would make them really vulnerable to the deformation necessary to cut metal. Without the poison the Dark Eldar add, it's rather like death by a billion really deep paper cuts...

Regarding mono molecular weaponry - I'd imagine angle would account for the weaponry not always achieving the maximum amount of penatrive ability

Arch you talk about taking the piss out of Star Wars are you going to do more of that? by the way thinking on other fantasy universes are you still going to do a Game of Throne lore video? I know you have decades of 40k and fantasy lore but you did say something about a Game of Throne/ Song of Fire and Ice lore video way back in your Total War Rome LP

Okay... so.... Banshee aspect armor is equivalent to Carapace Armor, so not so light a form of protection. Secondly, the weighting strikes part of their armor is pretty pointless considering they wield power swords, and the matter disruptive power field means that the strength of the wielder is irrelevant. Matter simply collapses before the field. It is unfortunate that the game no longer reflects the lore.

As well as the mono molecular point. They cant be mono molecular in lore or tabletop for the simply fact they could technically with adequate fire destroy tanks with a handgun..

I don't think power swords are that storng that they'd essentially cut through anything as if it wasn't even there. Otherwise even Terminator armor would become useless the first second anyone brought a power sword to the fight. Power swords are just amazing at cutting and stabbing, though materials will still offer some resistance, I.E. there's a difference between cutting through Guardsman carapace armor and Astartes power armor with a power sword.

SinerAthin Actually that’s a recent difference. In the lore power swords can cut through even power armor like butter, and up until 6th/7th edition 40k power swords in the game simply ignored armor saves. Killing terminators was basically the intended role of Howling Banshees until GW nerfed power weapons.

I could see why Otherwise imagine if someone fumbled and dropped their power sword during a boarding action. The sword would cut and fall right through the entire emperor class ship!

ThatRandomPerson They can if they're lucky, with rending: if I remember correctly, they're strength 4 ap5 rending (meaning a 6 to wound or armour penetration means it's resolved at AP2 or becomes an additional D3 plus 6 plus the strength of the weapon: breaking into, if you're lucky, armour 11-13. That's my understanding at least

Although I agree with you Arch, don’t the Howling Banshees have a 4+ armor save? Basically carapace armor. Couldn’t they sustain close combat a little longer than most melee units?
