An idea that I've heard for the Kroot having space travel is that Orks crashed on Pech and the Kroot ate them, so they have the ability to innately understand technology to a very limited degree. It might help explain why the Kroot are also one of the only other races to have an underbite (an otherwise rather Orky trait).

Oooooh boy arch, let me get in on that: Biologicaly speaking we eat DNA daily, EVERYTHING has DNA, it's proteins that get broken down, absorbed and recycled into base proteins we use to synthesize our own DNA for new cells. Now imagine a species that instead of breaking down eaten DNA, instead absorbs it whole. Then this DNA is distributed to cells where a form of cellular reproduction will comence which integrates parts of this newly absorbed genome into the original host genome genome of the kroot. From this point forward, these new cells with the modified genome will enter a rapid proliferation phase while the old cells with the old genome are ordered to die, thus in a quick window of time the new genome becomes majoritary for this specimen. Arch, this is not as impossible as it sounds. All it demands is a special adaptation of the digestive and cellular reproduction systems.

Arguably the Kroot could be said to think "YES, help me secure my nom-noms by standing here shooting, instead of claiming it yourselves." Obviously the Tau take advantage of the Kroot's preference of melee, but it is quite clear that they tried to arm them in a 'proper Tau way' initially, and that didn't work because the Kroot wanted to beat stuff up, so they made those more sturdy but less impressive ranged weapons. At least the Tau tried to preserve the Kroot. Incidentally or by design; no idea. Just as obviously the Kroot take advantage of the Tau, by going to new places and having delicious new nom-noms and getting weaponry, money (for whatever they use that for) and backup while doing it. What's not to like about that? It's all about point of view really.

Technically Arch, every species has a different definition of luxury. I could see and understand the Kroot not wanting things like soft comfy chairs, seeing them as a waste of resources and culturally as something that makes you weak, in the same manner orks see the Tau as weak, for shunning close quarters combat. When you have limited resources and your culture tells you,. you don't need to use them to make comfy chairs, you won't really see yourself as missing out, until such time when you sit in a comfy chair and decide you enjoy it. Your analogy with Sparta is a bit flawed as well, in order for that to work, there would have to be a tribe of Kroot, who love luxuries. Any contact with Tau luxuries for example, would be seen as basically "those baffling, weird alien things". Also are Kroot really mercs for cash, or is a chance for new DNA, their ulterior motive, with cash being seen as that weird thing Tau and others insist on giving them?

Impossible to say, it really didn't go into all that much detail. The story focussed on the Shaper watching the gaunts impressive hunting behaviour & going on about how he can't wait to add its own hunting instincts to those of his pack. Then he gives a signal at the right time & his pack kills all the gaunts & the Shaper gives the order to eat them & that's when he gets the sudden feeling of dread. It said at that moment he just knew deep down that the DNA of these creatures must never be taken in by his species & he hoped he could curb his pack carnivorous instincts in time. Then the story just ended without concluding to anything (in true GW style).

The Norsemen never shunned luxuries. Why do you think that they were so happy to raid monetarists? They were unguarded and filled to the brim with shiny shit. They raided to gain wealth in the forms of land, slaves, gold/silver, and similar things. Like the sacramental wine that the monks would make. Even more, the vikings were not just the raiders. They were traders of all types, they were settlers going to set up a farm in another land, they were warriors going out to conquer rival kingdoms. The viking was literally EVERY Scandinavian that left Scandinavia at the time. Hell, the word's actual meaning is closer to 'adventurer' than anything else.

They held on to the old gods in sweden until the late 1600s in one town. And Vamp, if you call staying in the barracks for your entire youth and drilling daily, luxury, I'm going to question your view on the subject. He is referring to spartan blooded males. The Agoge was an active attempt to breed a stronger city state. And well, gee, I suppose it worked. until they faded into obscurity and gradually ruin, at least.

Yeah JoeRingo118. I'd probably appreciate the Tau more if not for the Tau Fanboys I've had to deal with going on with not only how they're "the only smart combatants" in the Warhammer 40k Galaxy but also "the only good guys". Thing is... I don't HATE them... I just don't think they quite deserve the spotlight that they've had thrust on them. In terms of Warhammer 40k's scope? There's probably hundreds if not thousands of other "Empires" the size and scope of the Tau running around. Most of which we haven't even heard a peep out of. I'd see the Tau as more interesting as a side show one off than a major Faction. They're good fodder for say, an RPG campaign like a Rogue Trader campaign, don't get me wrong. Just... not quite ready for Prime Time you know? And when they try to show the Tau as Prime Time players it tends to come off either pathetic (like the Damocles Gulf Crusade) or just insulting to the other side (Tyranid Codex where they get out foxed by the Tau and utterly decimated... in their own codex). That and considering in broad terms the Tau basically fight exactly like the Imperial Guard I get irked every time someone tries to say the Tau "Fight smart" and the Imperial Guard "Just throw men at it and hope to outlast them like suicidal idiots". I mean they both used a Combined Arms doctrine with heavy ranged armor, gunline infantry, and assault unit specialists. The only real difference is one of Scope. The Tau Empire is small enough that vehicles can be expended, not people. The Imperium has the opposite problem, people are cheap, armor is hard to come by. So they both use their expendable asset (Vehicles and Drones for the Tau, Guardsmen for the Imperium) to protect that which can't be replaced, and benefit from the capabilities of both.

Kroot that manage to eat Eldar and get their DNA seems to be able to get some kind of warpy stuff. Not much, just basic things like being able to do some kind of basic illusions ( Craftworlds Eldars ) or becoming more sadistic, predatory and generally being able to feed from the enemy pain. Well, to add to what Drazar Kabalblade said, there was a Silver Skulls short story in... I think "Fear the Alien" or maybe it was Only War short story collection book. In it a Kroot managed to nom on an Eldar. And by doing so gained enough Psychic Power to basically be able to solo a Silver Skulls Assault Marine squad, and be a match for the Prognosticator (Librarian) that was attached to them. The Silver Skulls had to Zoidberg away and flag to planet for Exterminatus in the end as they couldn't kill that one Kroot who had eaten like... 3 Eldar. ^ ^;

Their "eat and gain strength" ability is very weakly implied in 8th edition, and difficult to pull off. If a Kroot Shaper kills something with his ritual blade near friendly kroot, they don't take a morale test for that turn, which means saving a lot of kroot if you lost 10 out of 20 that turn. Would be cooler to see them have a real "get stronger" ability for lucky players, because they normally all die quickly anyways.

@drazarkabalblade9486

Necron are not living beings, they are metal. As such the Kroot can't eat them, or if they for some reason would do it, their would get no more that they would gain from eating Iron or Rocks. Plus... you don't want to risk putting the living metal of a Necron somewhere in yourself. Like NEVER. It's the same as eating Nids.

Arch sorry to spoil your day but humanity isn't top of the food chain biologically speaking in most areas, homo sapiens which is Latin for wise man is extremely intelligent, which permits us to make tools which give have us an advantage over rival species, its is a technological advantage not a biological one, depending on the time period humans were common pray for over animals, its interesting just how much technology has effect out lives as humans isn't it.
@hombreg1

That's where you're wrong. Without our biological advantage, there is no "technological" advantage.
@CornishKnight
8 жыл бұрын
true but I'm looking at it from a pure biological view, if you take away tech from humans entirely and we were forced to survive purely base on a biological basis we would not do that well, humanity's place in the food chain is a highly debated area in the scientific community even today.
@caliburncelt1987

+hombreg1 Ok, y'all need a lesson in evolution. There is no gene for superiority in any given field. There is simply stacking combos of genes to give co-dependant results. Eg: Humans are pursuit predators , they evolved a bipedal system that made them better at that. This meant more food. This allowed their brain to develop, but without having had hands with digits developed to grab tree limbs to manipulate tools we would still be back in ye non sapient days. It was the happy accident of opposable digits and stamina oriented pursuit bipedalism that got the show on the road for us as a species.
@nuke2099

Humans are where we are because of how we think compared to other animals and tool use. If you were to stick the strongest human into an arena with a big cat or other large predator without any tool weapons like guns, melee weapons he would die really...really quickly. The fact is humans are still prey its our technology that widened the gap. Take away the tech and we actually haven't advanced that much biologically as a species at all.
@CornishKnight

our species trophic level which is the means by which a species is ranked in a food chain is 2.21 out of a total of 5 we are omnivores not apex predators, which predominately eat meat of cause this can there depending in the environment that humanity finds itself in, but overall we are not at the top of the food chain biologically specking which was source of my original statement

Not so sure about curbing their cannibalistic tendencies around the Tau. In fact, a bit of fiction in the first Tau Codex seems to suggest that not only do the Kroot have a very twisted, morbid sense of humour (not too surprisingly, given their culture and biology), they also find making Tau queasy and disgusted to be completely and utterly hillarious, as the Tau narrator realized to his detriment. This would range from anything to expelling noxious BO to inviting Tau for dinner, just to see their reaction.

Actually just a correction. The vikings never tried to stay strong by a crude life, they just had a crude life and most faced unknown perrils to acquire better living conditions either through raid, conquest or trade. Spartans on the other hand, had laws and state policy created for the very pourpose of "manning up" their entire population. They did engage in a concious effort to live a hard life to become better killing machines. It worked so well in what it was supposed to do that the spartans were eventually wiped out for the lack of spartans, mostly killed or discarded in the very meatgrinder policy they created to toughen them up. The nazis should have studied the whole history of Sparta not just the glory tales. Perhaps they wouldn't have made the same mistakes in martial doctrine. Well, if they did we wouldn't be here talking about it in english right? So perhaps it's a good thing the same doctrine led to the destruction of two monstrous civilizations.

Some bacteria are able to eat other bacteria and absorb their dna. Viruses can also "transfer" dna from one organism to another. So even on our mundane earth there are examples of dna transfer between species. I think the Kroot's ability to absorb genetic traits through eating is actually one of the more grounded things in the 40k universe.

9:22 easy. Sound travels in waves and frequency, much like light, each having high and low frequencies. So take the colour blue for example: it is a relatively high frequency colour, so it'd be a high of it was a sound as well (in fact blue as a sound is high enough to be around the high end of human hearing). Some people are actually born with the ability to "hear colours", it is a form of a condition known as synasthesia.

Creatures that can absorb the DNA of their prey do indeed exists. They are called rotifers. The cell stage of Spore is said to be inspired by them. The reason why real rotifers don't evolve into ever more complex creatures through this might be because they eat only very simple microorganisms that don't offer many additional genes.

Don't the Tyranid sorta do that absorb-life-and-use-it-for-themselves thing? Hell, the Starcraft Zerg do this (mostly just in Starcraft 2's evolution missions and a handful of story missions). I had thought that this was the Tyranid's shtick in 40k's universe. I mean, they are basically hyper-zerg on steroids cranked up way past 11 (with the exception of SC2's finale which basically involves UNIVERSAL cataclysm and a fusion of essence and form to become effectively a god that seeds and guides entire new universes, and of course all the things that went wrong in SC1 and SC2 that led to an astral flame-winged angel being the final hero unit of SC2).

I'm no biologist, but gigantic-isom, is a thing...their are literally people that cannot stop growing...look up any Guinness world record if the world's tallest man. In my primary* school in Ireland, we had a giant, AKA, a kid with gigantic-isom, that was, A LOT, taller then our sports couch, to the point of it being comical. So orks that just keep growing to insane sizes, is sort of similar to gigantic-ism in humans. *(a primary school in Ireland is for kids of ages 4/5 to 12/13, so relate that to whatever the equivalent name is for that age category of children in your country.)

Officially one of my new favorite 40K species. Not my favorite civilization, that goes to either the imperium or the Tau (I'm sorry, but even though the point of 40K is depressing endless war, I still just find the Tau's almost peaceful and benevolent approach appealing). Their just biologically more interesting than humans, Orks, Eldar or Tau. Tiranids are still my favorite though, sorry kroot, try being less obscure.

The idea is pretty interesting, and not entirely unimaginable. Some sort of symbiotic viruses in the digestive organs, perhaps? Its already an order of magnitude easier if you just modify the germ cells rather than the grown individual with billions of cells... If the gonads were somehow integrated with the digestive system.. Then you'd have to produce a LOT of embryos in mating, as in _thousands upon thousands,_ out of which maybe a viable child or two would grow up, with some dna of something you ate. I can imagine it working, but its hard to imagine how/why it would develop by natural selection. In principle, if you kill and eat something - its weaker than you. So why would you even want to incorporate its dna? I think "The Old Ones Did It" is the best explanation here... as in MANY 40k things.
