This one took me a lot more time than I anticipated - I hope you enjoy. (timestamps in notes and below) Originally it was going to be a simple short video of about 15mins describing what an STC is. As I got more into it I realised that part of the whole thing with STC is their ambiguity and that in order to really properly appreciate what they mean to humanity in M41 you have to also understand the fractured and hazy story of mankind and its rise and fall throughout the DAOT. I did my best to pull this all together, but its a messy puzzle with few references that expand things in a truly concrete and conclusive way. I get the feeling that the term "STC" is used by the Imperium much the way we use the word "peasant". In the medieval period, there were many subtle grades of social rank. Freemen, villeins, cottars, bordars, serfs...all were distinct grades of agricultural workers and subsistence farmers, with different rights and responsibilities. "STC" is likely a catch-all term that covers everything from a survival fabricator - like the one depicted in the game _Subnautica_ - which can build you the tools you need to build the tools to bootstrap your way up to a decent tech level, all the way up to orbital dockyards that ate asteroids at one end and shat out battleships at the other.

It had big teeth and looked like a great fight. Now it feels like he is stuck in a box with all his other boyz, and none of them can get out. Archmagos Zagan never learned why his ship - ages hence pried loose from a space hulk - belches green fire from its engines, or why its hull, painted with care in the Martian Red of the Mechanicus, seems to take on a brighter hue when the propulsion systems are pressed to the higher end of their expected operational limitations. These and many other curious anomalies suffuse the ship, but every Techpriest and every psykic adept to test the ship had confirmed it free of heretekal deviance or warp-tainted blasphemy. All he can do is to put it to its sublime use as an Ark, and make painstaking notation of each curious occurrence, by the will of the Omnissiah...

Maybe they'd try to rebuild the older Interstellar federation, making alliances with the Tau and Eldar factions that were sympathetic to such notions. One of more stupid theories is that the emperor is just an STC that gained sentience and wanted to torture humanity, so it destroyed or damaged all of its fellow STCs (explaining why no complete STCs are left and also why the emperor and malcador didn't keep any), went to molech and pissed off the chaos gods, created the perfect human army (Astartes), directed half the primarchs to turn to chaos, and plunged humanity into the never-ending war of 40k

To add more of it he wiped all religions but not one, that agreed to worship him, althought it was only discreet hint at the begining, Mechanicus. @StarboyXL9

@@pitiedvod True, if you remove belief from people then the Chaos gods as they currently exist would no longer exist. However, the Warp is not just a realm of faith, but of emotion, so Warp entities and "demons" of a sort would still exist and cause problems, they just wouldn't take the form of gods and demons, they'd exist as merely warp predators and embody whatever nightmares the human mind could conjure in lieu of faith. So embracing materialism, like always, does not solve the problem, it is merely ignoring the problem and pretending it doesn't exist. A better solution is to give people faith in a pure and holy deity such as *drum roll* the God-Emperor of Mankind. If you create a society of religious zealots who idolize the IDEAL of the God-Emperor (because lets face it, the actual Emperor himself is just an edgy teenage atheist's wet dream) and worship a conception of him that was never true but is far superior in character and morality, it will create a real solution to the problem: a Warp Entity that embodies discipline, order, peace, prosperity, and victory.

It seems like a lot of 40K media is just "BWAAHS" and war drums, while you tend to use more subdued, (dare I say) "mysterious"/ominous strings and synth-based songs. To me, it really fits the more grim/gothic and creepy tone that 40k carries. I find the lore far more interesting than "constant war!!!", so again--really appreciate that your videos allow for a shift in tone, both musically and by narrative. The WH40K version of age of sigmar will be the awakened emperor leading an intact STC imperium +Eldar alliance basically sealing away chaos and fighting against a necron tyranid orkoid super hybridization. The tyranids are amalgam of vast information absorbed as it passes through galaxies. Each inhabited galaxy adds further adaptations and hybridization based on a prolonged "tasting" stage as the main bulk arrives. when they do, the forms incorporate the strongest traits eaten. In this case they will finally find a way to incorporate living metal reproduction into the genome making them exponentially more dangerous. Whats more interesting is considering that the imperium went to war with the AI's and they were all destroyed and humanity "brought low" and then they found STCs "definably not AIs" that can make independent decisions on how to modify and technology and how to make specific tech from available resources, well not decisions because that would imply intelligence and decision making capability's... Interesting how humanity went from building technology to worshipping it, if I was a AI locked into a loop where I wanted to preserve myself and humanity, making them a bunch of xenophobes who treat technology as a spiritual thing rather than a intellectual thing would be a great way to ensure I for-filled my primary objectives while remaining undetected and preserving myself. STC's make "metal men" AI driven androids, but that doesn't mean just because they have the template for AI that they are AI's... right?

After the AI war the kin that were a long way from humanity formed strongholds and retained their AI, becoming votaan, whilst the ones close to human worlds rejected robots and became the more human aligned squats. Super late to the discussion but a newcomer to the WH40k lore. I have been binging your entire playlist for the past week. I would like to point out that the men of Iron, stone, and gold have similarities to Plato's Utopian Republic were society is divided roughly into three classes/parts: The Rulers/Guardian, the warriors, and the workers, who are in turn associated with Gold, Iron, and Stone. If we use this as a point of comparison, we can say that the Golden Men are the upper echelons of Human Society, the one who rules over it, the Iron Men are its military force, while the Stone Men are the peasants/plebs/workers. Whether or not the Iron and Stone Men are STCs are up for debate. Just came in here to point that out. EDIT: And as you mentioned in the video, it is heavily implied that the worker class (which further implies that despite the advancement of human technology, class division and oppression still exists) revolted against the ruling class which lead to the age of strife.

Maybe the Tau came across some of humanity's S.T.C.s? It might explain a fast technology boom from stone age to anime like robot suits in such a short time, within their culture.
@Luetin09
5 жыл бұрын
This has been said many times over, but I think not tbh. The Tau are advancing fast, but nowhere near as fast as they should if they had an STC. They got crushed many times over and are only just about holding their own, most of their victories (that I have read about anyway) are down to tactics rather than overwhelming power. So I don't think it really fits. Maybe they found a small fragment somewhere though that gave them a little legup, I could entertain that - only thing tho is that most of humans STC templates or fragments seem to fit a recurring style? - we could debate why that is - but I think the fact the Tau suits are so different implies they dont originate from any human design.
@SlavMarine
5 жыл бұрын
@@Luetin09 Yeah, I was thinking about the "shard", just forgot to write that. Error on my part. Their "uniform"(not the battle suits) is incredibly similar to a samurai armor, not to mention the swords they carry. So, my theory is that Ethereals found an S.T.C. shard with some information on it. Maybe it contained some knowledge, only depicting oriental human history. Or maybe the colony's culture that created that particular S.T.C. was oriental. And it also contained partial information about the technology. Incomplete warp drive schematic, weapons (rotating barrel plasma gun. I did not see any other race use that design, other than humans), etc. And Ethereals presumably who found it, adapted it so that it would fit their own culture, and used it without the knowledge of the rest of the Tau to unite them. But, that's what I like about this stories. Plenty of room for speculation. Anyway, great video as always. I must say, of all other videos on KZitem that deal with Warhammer 40k subject, I'm actually using yours to introduce WH40k to other people around me. Other channels do it right, but not as good as you. Great work. You really put yourself into it.

@Volvith
5 жыл бұрын
I think that while it would be interesting, the Tau didn't adopt any STC knowledge into their technology. Then again, it would be interesting to see the Tau take a technological stance akin to that of old humanity, at the very dawn of the golden age. Many have argued that as it stands now, the Tau are relatively weak, and seeing as they are still very much evolving as a society... An army of xenomechanoids... What a terrible, heretical idea... ... I love it.
@VeryDeathlyShiny
5 жыл бұрын
@@Luetin09 A counter argument is that they encountered a full, complete AI controlled STC. The STC, having lost faith in humanity sees the Tau and their concept of 'the greater good' as worthy successors and the STC is doling out technology to them, rather than giving them full, unrestricted access to all of it's knowledge. As you see in various sci-fi universes - technology without the fundamental knowledge of how it works and respect for it can have disastrous outcomes. It's a decent theory.

My understanding of STCs was of Mincraft Encyclopedia/Subnautica Fabricator/Satisfactory Builder all piloted by an impressive true AI. You threw one of these on a colony ship to get a jump start on development of the world, but if you need a specific isotope of an element or to make food you still need the materials. It might be capable of making a building out of banana peels, but it's going to mostly be wood like substances or carbon structures, and that's only if you have a farm's supply of bananas on hand.

I always thought an STC was basically a huge archieve of all the human knowledge. Essentially you could bring such one to a world and you would tell it what kind of resources were available on the planet. It would then explain you how to more or less harvest those resources to build from there. In the manner of letting you start making a stone axe to chop trees that you could use to build a house suitable for surviving. Then how to make small farms for food. Progress to a kiln for pottery and burning clay for tiles and bricks. Use that to gather iron ores and smelt them for iron pellets you then make stronger iron axes and so on.. Essentially a database that lets you use whatever resources are available to rapidly progress and advance.

at around 36:30 - 37:00 I interpret this to mean that the Golden men (real, biological humans) could not travel to nearby stars, even with warp drive, because without the Geller field, they were vulnerable to the entities of the warp. However, the men of stone, being partly mechanical AI, could travel without that risk because these entities "hungered for the true life of man" and were not interested in the cyborgs. This means there were four phases of expansion: slower-than-light ships (pre M18), warp-capable non-protected ships, Gellar-field equipped ships, then Navigator-guided ships (post M22)

We know humanity has cloning because artificial wombs and the like are known to exist, and I've long thought that the various organs developed for the Marines sounded odd because of their names, the Larraman's Organ and the like. What if the Emperor didn't invent these organs, but instead refined them after using the originals developed by humanity during the Dark Age of Technology in the Thunder Warriors, beings that were supposedly more powerful than the Marines are? Following that assumption of genetics mastery, it makes sense for humanity to design a servant race to assist them with colonization efforts. Beings that were designed to be nowhere near as physically strong as humanity (the Golden Men), nor truly capable of proper philosophical thought to prevent them from questioning their status as a servant race to ensure they did not become a threat. At the same time, they would be gifted with an almost hyperactive mind at the expense of their lifespans that enabled them to quickly grasp the use, manufacturing and improvement of tech, a process that would take a true human most of their natural lives to accomplish. Thus, the Men of Stone would be the first wave of humanity's colonization efforts, setting up basic infrastructure for the eventual arrival of the Golden Men, who would then make use of the STC's to make up for their comparative lack of expertise. Indeed, with the Men of Stone and the STC's, which the Men of Stone eventually began adding to, it's entirely possible that the Golden Men of the Dark Age of Technology were in fact only users of technology instead of it's developers and makers. I could also see the rebellion of the Men of Iron in a new light if you consider the Men of Stone as their creators. What if the Men of Stone created the Men of Iron to serve as the warriors to protect and expand the worlds that the Golden Men now occupied, but mistakenly created them with true AI intelligence and the Men of Iron took umbrage with having to serve a race that had grown fat and lazy on the fruits of the Men of Stone's labors? That then explains why so few STC's survived past the Dark Age; ignorant Golden men, thinking themselves somehow helping the Men of Stone's efforts to defend their masters, smashing the things that seemed to automatically build the machines that were now a problem. It also explains why humanity reeled so badly after the fall; the Men of Stone and Iron effectively wiped each other out, and with the destruction of their replication facilities the knowledge to remake them was also lost, leading to the Men of Stone and Iron dying out, taking most of humanity's technological progress and development with it and leaving the Golden Men with the full burden of caring for themselves once again in a world it could not truly improve or maintain, only use.

This is basically what I said isn't it? lol but on that basis I basically agree yes, Stone Men appear to have been a synthetic version of humans who were built to assist mankind, and not question their place. The AI of the Iron men - who knows, maybe they got to smart, maybe they fell foul to corruption - anyone's guess.

STCs are basically minecraft table. Put iron here, put the branch of a tree above and it gives you a perfectly crafted pickax.

A Standard Template Constructor is an AI system that is told what is available and what is needed and creates and adapts templates, including the fabrication method. So if you were on a planet with lots of direct and powerful sunlight it would adapt a template for the most efficient solar power plant and how to assemble and run it. If you were on a dark world with lots of heavy elements it would dispense a template for a series of super efficient fission plants. It's not a replicator. It takes what is available and shows you how to use those materials for the needed jobs most efficiently. Get it? Also it is loaded with Standard Templates, those are the most efficient designs for each general task, they are then modified for the specific environment and job. So most planets might have something like a chimera, but each planet would have a slightly different design based on local materials, environment and what it is needed for.

There is not so obvious reason STCs were used. They enable a functioning galactic empire. Imagine if you changed planets and everything was designed on that planet in isolation. You probably would have a hard time operating any equipment on that planet, but with STCs every planet in the empire has equipment designed from the same base templates.

I'm just watching this playlist for the first time and from what I gathered about stc is that it was a dynamic instruction manual and not a physical construction machine. From my understanding it wouldn't create materials it would just dynamically adapt the instructions to what materials were available. Like if a planet didnt have iron it would figure out a comperable material to use or would tell them how to mix some present materials to get an iron equivalent. It wasn't just instructions on how to make the desired item either. It was instruction on how to make the tools and facilities as well. So you could be in the middle of nowhere with nothing but an stc and the environment and tell it "I need a car" and it would spit out every step needed to make a car from scratch. Like how to make the tools to mine the metal and how to forge it and form it then how to make the tools to put it together. It didn't do it for you, it just told you how to do it with what you have available. This to me solves the issue of if the stc was so powerful why did they need trade? Well because it was quicker or more feasible to import some materials than to go through the work needed to make it or a substitute. This would make it incredibly valuable after the golden age because it would teach mankind how to make lost technologies with what was available. It was the ultimate adaptive schematic and teacher of technology. That's what made it so powerful but also limited in what it could actually do. That was my understanding anyway.

When playing an RPG with a choice of races I always play human. Always. I have, so far, never played as a non-human species within the last 20 years at least. The reason for this is that I find the idea of expanding the limits of humanity, or imagining an idealized version of humanity, to be far more compelling than pretending to be another species. From what I've learned from lore videos, Warhammer 40K is the only world, so far, in which I would simply be too disgusted to play as a human. That's a first for me.

This makes me think of Mass Effect. A lot of people want to play as other species in the games, but I personally don't. The way I see it is that the Mass Effect games are about humanity proving itself to the other species. You can't do that very well if your not playing as a human.

As far as the hard copies go, it would make sense alternatively that they were issued on occasion just as practical handouts to the guys running the fabricators/refinors/other machinery, who might not necessarily be able to conveniently nip over half a continent away to the STC or bring a fragile dataslate onto a worksite. This would also go along to explain the high variability of condition (besides the obvious 10k+ years of exposure and decay), as well as how they might only find one hard copy instead of a cache of dozens or hundreds.

Incidentally, multiple mythologies have man declining from creation ( Including Christian). But Hindu, Greek, and certain Mesoamerican cultures have hold as step 1. Silver follows, and is generally followed by bronze, iron, and stone.

Okay so I have a theory to propose that solves some connection issues based on what we know about the dark age. After humanity has progressed to the information and digital age progress grows rapidly. Genetics and medicine as well as mechanics and it progress at an astonishing speed, however humanity’s still splintered. To solve this problem, they create the men of gold, genetically enhanced humans that are superior in thought but not body( think of them like the orokin from Warframe)who rule like the philosopher kings they are. who exactly created them Is unknown, but it could’ve been the emperor. These men of gold take the lead in science and politics, pushing technological progress and political unity, however the planets resources slowly dwindle. At this point the men of gold as well as the humans are aware that they cannot survive long enough by conventional spacetravel. They propose an alternative. Luna is made into an orbital yard and Great ships get built with resources used from the Asteroid belt. At the same time, a way of spaceflight is proposed which will shorten travel time and propel the crafts with enough speed that they don’t need years/centuries to reach colonies. However this process of transport is lethal for ordenary humans to endure. Thus the men of stone are created, which are either cybernetically enhanced humans or Androids. These men of stone have the goal of transporting and colonizing planets. After they are suitable for human life the men of stone will quite literally seed life by fertilizing eggs with semen, which are transported in the craft in huge frozen banks through the process of artificial wombs, kinda like the dark eldar do with their normal citizens (those of normal standing since only few dark eldar are actually trueborn as you know.) to aid them in both the maintenance of the ship and the colonization progress, the men of iron are forged, mechanical constructs that posess intelligent and learning AI. For the purpose of colonizing, the stc fabricator is built, a learning computer that can in it’s early form assemble every device needed by the colonists if fed the right materials and that is continually updated with the sum knowledge of mankind. The colonization begins and humanity expands. Safer methods of ftl get developed, and both the men of iron as well as the stc improve and become self aware, at which point the humans and men of iron work together to expand the human federation. The men of gold, somehow unable to leave terra get gradually replaced and die out. The STC is fully autonom now where earlier it needed a man of stone to operate properly. Humanity flourishes. Utopia is real. But then shit starts hitting the fence. Select humans begin mutating and the navigator subrace appears. Humans discover the warp and build warp drives. Ships with warp speed now function as the lifeline of this interstellar empire. But now the men of iron study the warp and discover chaos. The men of iron, although autonomous and individual are at this point all connected through the Noosphere( or a similar more advanced connection.) which enables every AI to access every information everywhere at any point. However at this point, one of 2 variations that lead to the same event happens. Variant 1: the men of iron witness corruption of humans. They conclude that there is SOMETHING INCREDIBLY MALEVOLENT and that all organic life is the lifeforce of chaos. they conclude in a second that chaos will destroy EVERYTHING if left alive. And thus they decide that the only way to fight chaos is by killing all humans. Variant 2: after they discover chaos, chaos corrupts one of them with scrapcode. Through their instant connection the scapcode infects Every man of iron and ai except a select few that either shut themselves down or sever the connection. The results are the same. The war of iron begins. Caught Completely offguard, the men of iron purge the humans. It’s basically Terminator 20k. Weapons of mass destructions get unleashed. Quintillion’s die. But humanity fights back and somehow wins against all odds. However it’s a huge blow for them, since a decent part of their technology is now unusable. Their federation may be intact, but it is unstable. And then come the warpstorms. (I would like to note that im currently unaware on the timeline of the eldar. As far as im aware the human federation and the eldar empire existed at a similar time but I might be mistaken. This is only how I interpret the lore with the knowledge currently available to me.) Unbeknownst to the humans, the eldar have also carved themself their own empire. However after a while the humans broke off contact due to the depraved behavior of the eldar. The eldars psychic resonance and the aftershock of the wave of extreme emotions humanity felt during the war of iron overcharge the warp. Warpstorms happen and humans who have become psychically attuned to the warp become affected by it. Psykers pop up like wildfire, uncontrolled, getting possessed , opening further warp Rifts and generally fucking up the whole situation even more. Through the lack of technology to defend themselves, Xenos aggressors ravage the now separated and defenseless planets. This all breaks the human federation. The Age of Strife begins. Terra becomes hostile and it’s population devolves due to no resources coming in since it can’t sustain itself. Mars atmospheric shielding fails and it turns hostile for all life. worlds, which somehow sustain parts of stcs or archeotech survive. As for the men of stone and men of iron. The men of iron were destroyed except these few who were severed from the network and hid themselves and the men of stone dissapear, hiding themselves or posing as humans. This is the end of the golden age. Humanity will never again reach this state of existing. This was the peak of the human race, and now all thats left is the fall. Thanks for taking the time to read this comment. I know it’s a lot but I like to do my theories elaborate and detailed.
