Taurus 3 is an early glimpse of Amarok, hope you will react to that beast some day (will be a one hour workout :)

This is one of my favourite Oldfield albums. Foreign Affair does go on far too long but otherwise it resonates with my personal sensibilities. Disagree with Shadow on the Wall but I respect your opinions.

Yeah, Foreign Affair is a chill groove. It's really a background/ambient track when I (Keith) listen to the album -- if I don't focus on it, it makes for a rather pleasant mood...

I don't think Foreign Affair goes on too long at all. I find it totally hypnotic and I'm always disappointed when it comes to an end, although it's nice that it's followed by such a great track as Taurus III.

@ajs41 yes hypnotic is a great word for it. It's hypnotic and repetitive because it's modelled like having an affair.

Thank you for this interesting review of one of my favourite albums. I respect your opinion although personally I totally disagree with you, which only makes it more interesting. Can someone please tell me why a lot of Oldfield fans in general hate “Moonlight Shadow”? To me it's genius. It's one of the best songs ever written. The combination of the melody, story and Maggie's angelic voice is a match made in heaven. In fact, I'd turn this review upside down. I love side B, particularly “Moonlight Shadow” and “Foreign Affair”. Side A is great. It's inventive. But I get a little tired of it after 20 minutes of variations on the same theme. The short tracks are more accessible. But it seems a lot of hardcore Oldfield fans dislike the shorter tracks and prefer the longer ones.

When I think of this album , I think of the opening Oberheim synth richness, and the way the title track moves through all sorts of feelings. And the freakin badass drum jam at the end. Moonlight Shadow’s Melodie’s are nice and I’m as big of a Maggie Riley fan as there is. But it just doesn’t develop or change enough. As we talk about in that video, and in some of the other side two videos, the songs are just sort of half-done. It seems like Mike was into the long-forms more than the short forms. Like he was just making short pieces to fulfill his record contract. Just my/our opinions!

you should add subtitles, sometimes it's hard to hear you over the music :)

You misunderstand Foreign Affair, you think it's too long, it just repeat. The point of the long repetitive song is that it's a symbol of an affair. A repetitive exciting thing that leads no where.

Ok, so let’s say I get that. I mean, I dig a lot of fairly repetitive music. I can handle fairly repetitive music when it’s just ambient and I’m not listening to it closely. But if the artist wants me to listen closely, but there is absolutely no variation at all, they’re going to have to make it worth my time, or either it’s just going to drive me crazy eventually, or I’m going to give up on it. I’ve listened to Foreign Affair dozens of times over the decades since its release. I get it. Now stop trying to sell me on it so I can spend my time on something more interesting.

Agree, Foreign Affair is a good cut that goes on too long.

Yeah, Mike could easily have added a few breaks here and there...

I don't agree at all. It's supposed to be hypnotic and the length of it is big part of that in my opinion.

Thanks for the nice words, @Les. We do love Oldfield, and are ... disappointed when it seems like he puts out less-than-optimal work!
