No, players in prior contests had to wait for the ball to land to throw the next pitch. The rules were changed to promote more HRs and thats what they got.

Just got home from this. I'm a Phillies fan but I have a soft spot for the Mariners, not just because I live here now, but also because both our teams have a similar level of love and dedication despite the bad times being more common than the good. The atmosphere in that stadium during this was absolutely insane, pretty sure the place would've come apart if he actually won.

I was there. No doubt one of the most jaw dropping experiences I've seen in person too. I remember at one point I was looking down at the kids trying to catch the balls that didn't cross the fence, they were just standing there for a good solid 30 seconds cause they knew any ball Julio hit was going over the fence.

I still prefer the old format where they had 10 outs to hit as many as they could. Now you can’t even really admire any of these as there are 2-3 balls in the air at a time.

Give the coach a lot of credit for: 1. Throwing those pitches exactly where the catcher was setting up (where Julio wants it) 2. His rhythm pitching was excellent, if not perfect. It allowed for JRod and himself to keep their energy throughout the round, where some pitchers try and force the ball a little too fast and that throws off the batters balance and takes away energy. Well done Julio, I hope this is performance can jumpstart your second half this year and get you back to the high level of play we saw last year and know you are capable of performing at.

I miss when they had to wait for it to land. Fast pitching is a huge problem. I’m all for more homers, and J Rod is a beast, but it nags me when fast pitching wins a round, like Harper in ‘18. Maybe I’m just a salty Schwarber fan, but you be the judge of that.

Great performance but boring. Bring back the old format. I used to get excited about sluggers hitting areas of different ballparks you never thought possible. Each pitch meaned something and each homerun you could watch all the way through. I could only watch this highlight up to the break. Nothing like being at the edge of your seat watching Sosa in Milwaukee or Hamilton in New York.

Yeah, and you got to enjoy the insane distances of the home runs. Now the next pitch is en route before the previous one hits the stands, I'm not a fan of this format at all. Yes it took a lot longer but who cares? Just sit back and enjoy watching a home run derby
