Things like document preview can be done on Windows too, but it does require an app, being either the MS Power Toys or a third party one. You can choose which functionality you want to enable and can define most shortcuts to functions in PowerToys freely. PowerToys can also do many other things, like reconfiguring your keyboard's key layout; just be careful if you move keys around, as you can end up losing access to some key(s) on your keyboard. Trying to swap two keys and forgetting to redefine both of them is not good...

So in our company, associates and middle managers get Windows laptops that usually only come with an i5 processor while seniors and heads get Macbooks. One meeting, our boss told our team of 6 that he finally got approval from IT that our team can switch to Mac. When nobody was responding, he asked for a show of hands if anybody wanted to switch and not a single one of us raised our hands lol. Honestly, I think some things would definitely be faster using an M1 but once you're used to almost everything that Windows has to offer such as a clipboard history, instantly snapping tiles, and knowing more than your fair share of Windows shortcuts, I get incredibly frustrated when I use a Mac.

@roxics

@@lucifernebulae I just built a PC with Windows 10 and coming from MacOS I feel like I traded a new luxury sports car for an old '80s clunker. Trying to do anything in Windows is frustrating and feels incredibly claustrophobic. It lacks spring loaded folders, column view, doesn't remember the last folder you used, won't give you details and preview at the same time, just one or the other unlike MacOS. No right clicking on a word for its definition. There is no Quicklook functionality, no multi-file renaming, no automator style functionality for automating tasks when working with files, no tabbed explorer (though apparently they added this in 11 finally). Alt-tab and task view are a poor excuse for Mission control and hot corners. Especially since task view doesn't show you all your open windows and alt-tab quickly disappears. Trying to get anything done takes twice as long on Windows. And it's not like I'm new to Windows, I've been using it since 3.1 back in the early 90s. Built my first PC in '98. But it has been seven years since I've used it daily and going back to it is a rude awakening. There is no comparison, MacOS is way superior for productivity and usability.

Even though he does not like it, I highly suggest using your applications in full-screen mode. Since I have switched to macOS, I have gone down from three to only one monitor, which works very very well for me. Now, I can simply switch between applications when they are in full-screen just like I would on my iPad or iPhone. I stay a lot more focused too as I'm not getting distracted by any apps I'm currently not working with. Furthermore, when you need to work with two applications at the same time, just put them into full-screen split view or if it needs to go fast, leave them on your desktop as a window. For small tasks, I only use windows, for example quickly looking through the Finder or checking a password in 1Password, but Safari is always in full screen, just like my code editor and applications that I'm working on more than just a few minutes. It works very well for me, so, it might work for you too

@@SOTP. Yes, I know you can use multiple desktops on Windows, but these are no replacements for fullscreen applications. Plus, it's not the intended way on Windows. This becomes clear when you compare both systems. On macOS, the maximize button will put a window into fullscreen mode and therefore open it in a new space (virtual desktop but not really a virtual desktop). You can also toggle the fullscreen mode of any application by clicking Ctrl + Cmd + F or Fn + F. Switching between them becomes also very easy with the trackpad. This is not the case on Windows. On Windows, maximizing a window will maximize it on the same desktop, so you would need to manually move it to another virtual desktop to have the same effect. Windows just added virtual desktops as a feature to organize windows for certain situations, for example, to have one desktop for work and one for personal stuff. You can do this on macOS as well, but mostly you use spaces (virtual desktops) for fullscreen or split-screen applications and that's where macOS excels compared to Windows. That's also the reason why I switched from three to only one monitor. Because spaces are designed to be used on a single monitor. Working with a MacBook without any external monitors works so great because of this. Windows accepts more use cases, but macOS is far better for laptops

Previews of app windows and quick controls on Dock and Task bar. In Windows I can preview even multiple app windows and quickly play pause music for example directly from the taskbar without opening the app. Super handy and useful. Apple being stubborn even removed the media control from taskbar feature from the new Apple Music app on Windows to give users a Mac like old school vibe. Something to consider, window snapping feature, is actually patented by Microsoft Inc., Cannonical and some Linux distributions are continuously licensing the feature to be able to use it. Apple just doesn t care to license it.

@d3cr1pt

@@jblbasstester6198because it is useful, and was just implemented on Aero Snap during Vista development. It was something simple, but very useful, so they patented. Great video. The good thing about Desktop OSes is as you said the ability to bring many features from the competition. On Windows for example, Powertoys from Microsoft adds similar features like Spotlight Search (which is way better than the built in one), some new options for pictures in the right click menu in explorer and Quicklook.

Licensing MacOS to other manufacturers like HP or Dell would ultimately ruin its reputation. Yeah, 256GB of storage on the baseline MacBooks today is a joke - but it is incredibly fast storage, exactly enabling the File Preview and Spotlight Search functions to perform so effortlessly fast. MacOS experience is polished precisely because it is curated; and if it isn't curated by Apple themselves anymore, then the quality would drop tremendously. Just look at how many laptops manufacturers like Asus, Acer and Lenovo churn out every year... I reckon that many models per year just create gargantuan amounts of e-waste nobody is talking about.

I recently used a MacBook for the first time ever, not being able to downclick with the trackpad was off-putting, i had to keep my finger on the track, and then press down without lifting my finger, i know that maybe that's something that people just get used to it in a few days, but it seems counter intuitive to me. You can't double click anything, you have to press down on the trackpad after you have your finger on top of whatever you want to open.

Thank you for this video! Something that struck me recently.. have you considered reviewing the differences between ipados and macos? I know it seems goofy but there's a lot of cross inspiration and hidden key commands. It feels a little bit like if they could make an operating system now versus what they knew back then.

3:43 HUGE MISCONCEPTION, on windows 10 AND 11 closing a window by hitting the X does NOT stop the app from running. It just shuts off the visual. In the bottom right there's a little arrow. That will show primary background process and should alwalys be how you close apps.

doesnt it still ask the app to close itself? it may be the window but if the program is just… that window, then it should be gone. End task does bruteforce it though.

@@Xanzkin Yes, it is true, it all depends on the laptop that you will get, although laptops that provide graphics cards are much better, but my laptop does not have a graphics card, but rather runs on Intel Core i 5 8th generation, and Office works more than excellent. In the end, it all depends on the performance and specifications of the laptop, not on whether it is Windows or Mac.
