The Wishek disc is a very practical concept. As I think back to my farm boy days, it would have saved hours upon hours of field time and expense. Tractors like the JD 9420 can plow 60 plus acres a day. What an improvement over the 1950s and 60s!

For over a year I been watching most of your videos and enjoyed a lot of them. I also read a lot of comments pertaining to your videos and no one has asked you this question. Where did Garnett Farms find the money seeing as they own 29000 acres of farmland in Western Kentucky? Of course added to this all the machinery, barns, grain bins, and everything else. If you feel that is none of my business and don't answer I can understand. Just a little curious.

What a great video. I don't think I've seen discs do such a good job in one pass. It's would be great to have a full list of the farm's tractors etc and how many acres they have.

+fergie35X The farm has a good sized fleet. The main power houses for 2017 will be a Challenger MT875E, three 9620Rs on triples and five 9420Rs. These 4wds do the primary work for tillage, NH3 application, planting, seeding and grain carting. There are a number of 8245R, 7210R, 6R and 5000 series tractors on the farms as well for hay, tobacco and utility work.

really enjoy your videos especially now that you have started narrating :) how do the disk's get such a high down pressure on the disks ? are the frames filled with lead shot ?
@bigtractorpower
7 жыл бұрын
I think the heavy frame, spring resets on the blades and hydraulic pressure from the tractor all factor in on the tillage ability of the Wishek.

How far do they have to haul the grain to sell it? I'm surprised they grow tobacco. Do they strip it in the field or hang it on stalk?
@bigtractorpower

The farm travels about 3 miles to the elevator. The tobacco is cut in August and put in a barn. It is stripped around Thanksgiving.
@Parents_of_Twins

That's what my relatives in KY did as well. They do something similar in WI as well however in NC they strip it in the field. I was wondering because these people seem pretty busy so I thought maybe they used one of the stripping machines that were used in NC. I don't know how well they worked or how popular the machines were/are just that they existed.

Some farms strip till tobacco. This farm v rips the ground in the fall and used a field cultivator in the spring.
@Parents_of_Twins

No. I mean they strip the leaves from the plants in the field and leave the stalks. Nothing to do with any form of tillage. Sorry for the confusion.

If I have a tractor of 79 hp, how many discs should be the disk plow to not work forced?
@wildturkey5838
7 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of variables to answer that question. What it could pull in a sandy loam soil is very different from what a tight clay soil would require. The diameter of the disc and dept of tillage would also vary. Another big difference is how sharp the edge of the discs are. We had "hard surfaced" discs in the Texas Panhandle sandy loam and it took a big 4wd to pull our 32' disc. A neighbor had the same disc and pulled it with a 2wd but his discs weren't sharp and didn't till as deep.

Quite a bit. They normally get across 10,000 acres in 10 to 14 days depending on the weather. It looks they will add a 3rd 26ft 862NT in 2017.

bigtractorpower -----------------> Thank you for your reply. Question.....Why do farmers in the USA resist moldboard plowing (while Europeans embrace the plow) ? Quite impressed with the Wishek disc in use. It does a remarkable job.
@silentdeath9237
7 жыл бұрын
Jim Listerman discs work good for residue chopping but I'm a firm believer that soil needs to be turned at least every three years also he said the disc does as good of job as a plow I disagree you can see they are only going 4 - 5 inches deep when me and my dad plowed we went 7 - 8 inches deep and discing really doesn't get the residue underground to decompose like a plow would do.
@bigtractorpower
7 жыл бұрын
+Jim Listerman I think there are several factors. Soil types, speed of tillage and acres that need to be covered. There are still pockets in the U.S. and Canada that plow. Plowing is also common in areas here that raise canning crops, dry beans and vegetables.
@bigtractorpower
7 жыл бұрын
+Silent Death The reason this farm likes the disks for tillage is for sowing wheat. They want to bury the residue but leave the field fairly firm as the wheat is sowed on the surface and does not require deep tillage. Before the Wisheks they used the run flail shredders, DMI 730B mulch rippers and Wil-Rich soil finishers. They found the deep tillage left the field soft for winter and spring spraying passes and during wet June harvests.

If the disk had 10" spacing and sharp 26" disk a 8370R could get 18 acres per hr and make a finer seed bed. Less tractors could do the seed bed prep. Also use less fuel/ ac. 8" spacing would do even better. When I upgraded to 7.5" disk spacing from 11" the drill had moist soil to plant in with finer soil contact for a better stand. The higher speed of 6 mph is pitching up a ridge on the outside of disk.
@iamatt568
7 жыл бұрын
That's all fine if the ground you are disking is a sandy loam. Here in KY it is very clay based and it takes all 520lbs per blade to get the blades to dig in. Especially if we haven't had any rain. We have ran lighter sunflower rigs and they leave too much residue for our liking.
@robertreznik9330
7 жыл бұрын
For us 520lbs would just add to the compaction and we would be planting the slabs of clay from the compressing by the wide spacing. We use a 19" turbo Coulter to help get a stand even in 300 bu/ac corn stubble.
