I herd Randy Shelby , who is from Wyoming and he builds riffles, and has hunted most of his life. He says that a 44 magnum with 335 grain bullets hard cast Flat Nose, is minumin for Grizzly Bears. He also said that you need a barrel lenght of at least 5 and a half inches long to get the full powder Burn in your barrel, any thing shorter than that is weaker and just a waste of powder, makes since to me.

There are many options when it comes to handguns for grizzly/ brown bears. I have lived and hunted in Alaska almost 40 years and have heard of many bear stories. Almost any handgun is too small until one goes to the really big bores, but the 44 has proven itself. The really big bores are sort of big guns and are not always carried. I have been using this Ruger 4" with 300 gr handloads. Small enough so it is always on me and enough power. Hey, thanks for the comments and watching!

I have watched a number of the videos posted on KZitem by "The Real Gunsmith". The first thing I noticed was, according to him, he is THE only real gunsmith, not one of the OTHER real gunsmiths. Ironically, that speaks volumes about him, more so than it does or doesn't say about any of the legion of excellent gunsmiths throughout the world, as far as I'm concerned...and I disagree with his assessment. If I follow the logic based on his declaration and assertions not mine, and underscored in his countless diatribes directed at virtually every subject he broaches, one could reasonably conclude that other gunsmiths aren't for real. Or, at the very least, and as he is so often wont to say they either are, "liars", or, "...don't know what the hell they're talking about!" Again, his words, not mine. But he doesn't stop there. He despises the gun and ammo manufacturers, for his perception of the ballistics slight of hand that is their data, as they continue to develop from tried and true cartridges, new cartridges that aren't new, and nobody needs or wants anyway; again, according to him. And, my God...whoever came up with the 6.5 Creedmoor and the 6.8 Western (or "Westerner" as he refers to it) should be stripped and paraded into a Wyoming town square at high noon, head and arms locked in wooden stocks, and given thirty lashes. My guess is, he'll gladly furnish the bull whip! He's obviously very knowledgeable on matters of gunsmithing, hunting, and shooting. His years of experience are legitimate, but hardly unparalleled, extraordinary, or somehow bordering otherworldly magic. I also appreciate his willingness to share that experience and his expertise on the social media platform. However, contrary to some of the comments of others, and despite the near-convincing bearded similarities, I don't view his tutorials, comments, or opinions as tantamount to Moses descending Mt. Sinai, with The Law of the land messianically carved in stone tablets...gun related or otherwise.

Not enough pen for big bears imo. .44 mag call it Old School but so is calculus which is proven and time tested.

Here in Alaska, the Single Action Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 was very popular for Bush carry for bears. Worked fine as long as one practices quick follow up shots. I don't have a .44magnum pistol, but I do have some hot .44 magnum ammo. So I load it into my single shot .410 smooth bore. The 18" barrel almost doubles the energy of that 230 grain flat nose. Never shot a bear with it, but I'm betting he won't live to tell the story.

@@30-06john Some, but not all .410 shotguns have an over-bored chamber to allow the .45 colt cartridge to fit... but the .44 magnum as well as the .444 Marlin cartridge will fit any .410 shotgun. Both also use a .429 dia. bullet, which is a tight fit in the .410 bore, therefore chamber pressures will be higher than when firing a .410 slug. The shotguns that I use have a very thick wall chamber,, plenty strong enough for .44mag, and apparently .444 Marlin. They are all single shot, break barrel shotguns with NO CHOKE! (that is important, you don't want to be forcing a large bullet through a choke) Some .410 shotgun barrels are factory choked down to .390. To use them for .429 bullets, you must cut the barrel down behind the choke. ( 6 inches usually does it) . I don't recommend trying this with any thin walled barrel or anything with a non-locking breach or bolt. The advantage to most .410 shotguns is that the barrel is usually the same barrel used for a 28 gauge, with a smaller bore. That makes them thick and strong. I've seen a video of one firing a .454 Casul. IT DIDN'T BLOW UP.

Genuine question......why would you use a single action for defense over a double action? A double action is quicker to follow up and reload.
@30-06john
2 жыл бұрын
That is a good question! First I will say that the Super Blackhawk has a proven record for bear defense. When I first moved to Alaska in the early 80's, they were very popular as it was cheaper, stronger and more reliable than the Smith 29's at that time. As for follow up shots, that is a bit of training. Cowboy action shooters are very fast with single action revolvers. Also google American Hunter 454 Casull challenge where they shoot 5 .454 Casull rounds in 3-4 seconds. Reloading a single action revolver is an issue, but 5-6 rounds is usually enough to stop or turn a bear charge. I remember only 1 time where a person had to shoot a grizzly more with a 44 mag.
