I was so happy to see this episode as someone who recently had surgery for PHPT. I'm not a doctor, and I actually had to all but diagnose myself and present the case to my primary. Fortunately, he connected me right away with a surgeon and the next day my surgery was scheduled. Looking back, it's pretty wild that it was missed for years. I had multiple elevated serum calciums going back years (starting borderline at 10.3 mg/dl and trending up), extremely low vitamin D, a DEXA scan showing osteopenia (at age 32, ordered for an unrelated reason), and had recently seen several specialists for my complaints (musculoskeletal pain, headaches, constipation, fatigue, polyuria, polydipsia, etc. -- admittedly vague symptoms). Thank you for tackling this. And curative surgery is a beautiful thing.

Sadly, very commonly missed or dismissed even by endocrinologists. Self diagnosis and referral is a struggle many go through. This needs to change.

My calcium levels are 11.6 with primary hyperparathyroidism my PTH the highest I believe has been 184 with a large benign tumor on lower left lobe I have basically every symptom you can have not always all at one time, but I am miserable and so looking forward to surgery. I’ve noticed on all the videos I’ve watched. Nobody mentions this high of calcium. It makes me nervous. I know I have a wonderful surgeon, but it’s scary. Thanks for the very informative podcast and I wish I had seen the endocrinologist the ENT will be doing my surgery maybe it’s best. I still see the endocrinologist. Hoping to have surgery in a few weeks. On a sidenote, love the cheesy jokes ha ha I might use one with my surgeon😂 thanks for making me giggle through all this pain

I had borderline Calcium and PTH for years. Depressed, Anxiety,. Constipation, Bone pain, exhausted, weight gain, horrible brain fog, insomnia. My doctor just pushed Prozac and B12 shots. I had enough and started going through my labs. I noticed two things. VERY LOW Vitamin D, and High Blood Calcium. I went in for ultra sounds, CT Scans, Sestamibi parathyroid scan, all showed NOTHING. But I pushed my surgeon who agreed to go looking and there it was. A large Adenoma on my lower left side. Week one after surgery I WAS 18 again. No more brain fog, energy you couldn't believe, no more constipation, I felt AMAZING. UP until 8 months ago when it's all come raging back. PTH 33 cALCIUM 9.9, horrible constipation again, brain fog, anxiety, etc etc etc. All over again. So, I'm hoping to get another surgery.

I am so sorry to hear all this. I have surgery in a few weeks and my surgeon said his patients never have to come back for a second surgery. He is world renowned I’m so blessed to have met him, like this surgeon is talking about. They use a monitor to keep checking your PTH levels and he said he will be looking at all my parathyroids not just the diseased one hopefully your surgery does that as well! but that is terrifying to me. I’ve heard this many times like you feel amazing and then it hits you again. I will be praying for you. I’m so glad you were your own advocate. It’s really sad, but it needs to be done. I lived in the hospital for several months a few years back. No one ever told me I was dying of septic shock. I had to figure it out on my own. it was terrifying. I’m still traumatized till this day and I’m a huge advocate for sepsis and I’m starting to think I’m going to be in advocate for hypercalcemia parathyroids to make sure you push those tests I’ve had hypercalcemia for at least five years. I didn’t know this until I searched. My own lab work. 😢
