Dr Dave Waldien is a conservation biologist and National Geographic Explorer with over 25 years of experience catalysing locally led sustainable conservation of the world’s bats. He received his MS in Forest Ecology and PhD in Wildlife Ecology from Oregon State University. He previously worked with Bat Conservation International (BCI) for over 12 years.
He is now a Visiting Assistant Professor at the College of William & Mary, a Graduate Associate Faculty at Christopher Newport University (USA) and serves as an Honorary Research Fellow with Lubee Bat Conservancy and the Harrison Institute. Since 2018, he has served as the IUCN’s Red List Authority for Old World Bats, responsible for engaging bat experts from around the world to complete assessments of over 900 bat species to be published on the Red List of Threatened Species.
During the COVID pandemic, he worked collaboratively to develop a process for students to work within academic classes and with species experts to draft Red List assessments of bats and other species, resulting in over 25 student-led assessments being published; another 100+ assessments are in process. As part of the Global Bat Diversity Network, he is co-leading a global effort to identify where bats may qualify as trigger species for Key Biodiversity Areas. This process will result in dramatic changes to KBA trigger species and help advance bat conservation with local leadership.
