Looking forward to this 460 build! I just picked up a super clean 74' core. Tear down is always fun. I found all original bearings and never bored. Nothing scored and crosshatch on every cylinder. Thinking about a 521 stroker kit.

Mostly correct but not quite! All 460 engines in the 80-85 years were designed with 8 degrees retarded timing sets, only the 72-79 model 460’s varied from 2, 4 or 6 degrees of factory designed retard due to the then new emissions standards. This is proven by using a degree wheel on the factory cam timing, straight up dot-to-dot was 7.5 - 8.5 degrees retarded. Most if not all carbed 460’s from 80-85 all ran at 8 degrees BTDC ignition timing which by put the actual engine timing at 0 degrees. Then the total distributor timing depending on the vehicle the engine was in could be anywhere between 26 to 44 degrees when checked at 3000 rpm. Personally, if your running a 460 with a factory timing set setting dot to dot and ignition timing set to 8 degrees BTDC at 800 rpm as Ford directed. You’d better make sure you have a tunable distributor vacuum advance canister and back the total timing advance to 32-36 degrees at 3000 rpm. This’ll give you sharp throttle response, easier starting, less if not no pinging when under load and better fuel mpg’s as well as better and more reliable power throughout the timing curve. Anything more than 8 to 12 degrees BTDC base ignition timing at 800 rpm and more than 36 degrees ignition timing at 3000 rpm is going to make the engine run leaner causing the exhaust to run hotter. Hence warped exhaust manifolds and blown out exhaust manifold gaskets. Use Fords exhaust bolt torque specs to a tee especially for manifolds and manufacturer specs for headers. Plus, tune the engine correctly from the start and blown exhaust gaskets as well as hard starting, pinging under load and undesirable fuel mileage will be pretty much non-existent. Those Ford 460’s loved running rich no matter what and Ford leaning then out to meet Emissions was the cause of many issues. The rest is rumors and speculation from operator error, installation error, improper tuning due to insufficient knowledge and experience setting base engine timing, base ignition timing as well as total advance timing. Plus tuning the factory “Holley built for Ford” 4180C carbs was next to impossible because, they were so temperamental due to elevation, ambient air temp and completely vacuum & ignition timing dependent to run correctly.

Hey Terry. I have an 85 460 that it is in my dually. It drinks gas like crazy. Don't you think If I advance it 2 degrees before TDC it would help that as well as power.
@terrygrover6440

Hello Russell, I do think it would help but how much I'm not sure, I believe the 85 has the timing TDC already and has a short power band like 4800 rpm so if you bump it up 2 degrees you will lose about 300 rpm on the top and it would knock it down to 4500 rpm maxed out , but I'm sure you already know that from all the cam swaps you've done wish I could tell you more, they are hard on gas

@@terrygrover6440 thanks Terry. I'm not concerned with high rpm I'm more interested in low rpm tourqe for pulling. I think also the the low compression is a milage killer too. I'll bump compression in the new motor and degree the cam slightly and try that

@@outfitsgarage88 you're right Russell the heads are 92 cc I believe and the dish piston is down in the hole correct those factors and it will be a whole different animal, the 1990 heads from what I hear have a small combustion chamber I think it's 75 cc but you know all the tricks just check everything out and see how you want to go

How does this timing chain set work? I assume you always set crank gear at zero (the keyway) and time the cam gear to the degree you want that is marked on the crank gear. So if I wanted 4 advanced the crank gear would be set to zero on the crank keyway and camshaft gear dot would line up with 4a mark on crank gear correct?

Yes, I am told that 72 429 Factory was “detuned” by factory the timing chain set was offset as you clearly explained. My next project is to replace the timing set with a straight up set. In addition to the timing retard, Ford installed dish pistons, to lower the compression, used DOV2aa? Heads. Is it correct that by reversing these issues the stock 429 returns to its former self. You failed to list the timing set part # with the multiple key ways in the crank gear. Who makes that set? Seems like a great idea.

Terry, I need your advice on this one...... On this Fairlane, I'm thinking of bumping it 2-4 degrees. I'm running 390's in the rear with either 26" (the 14's I have) or 27" (the 15's I have). I was thinking driving it the 1600 miles on the 15's and using the 14's on the track for a little better milage out of that C6 Transmission, then putting the 15's back on to drive it home on. Do you think it would be beneficial for not only a tiny bit at the track, and a lot more on the freeway logging in those 3200 miles (plus)? Or should I just "straight up" it and call it good?

Hey barerose , straight up dot to dot and the tallest tire you have with those gears, small block Chevy would be a different story .460 has a very short cam timing if you bump the stock cam to much all your going to do is run through the power band to quick, like let's say your stock cam is good till 4800 rpm every degree you bump it up you will shorten the rpm band , 2 or 4 degree advance you will wind up with about a 4500 rpm and motor will be dead after that needless to say the valve springs are weak and you can get valve float if you try to turn the motor to hard , i may have to do a segment on this had a couple guy's confused on my channel they were telling me that you gain rpm band from bumping the cam timing up when that's just the opposite , hope this helps if i have you confused just tell me 😂😂😂

So to advance 4 degrees I would spin the crank to make the 4 degree mark align with the dot on the cam gear?

Didn't explain to well about the 1967 timing chain it was a top dead center timing chain which means it advanced the cam timing 4 degrees to top dead center because the factory cam was retarded 4 degrees

I plan to restore the valve train of my '72 460 Lincoln. Now I heard that Ford retarded the cam timing from 16° to 8° for the 1972 model year. Can I correct this in installing a timing chain set from a '71 model? I have no intention on tuning measures, want to use a new cam that is as near to stock as possible. Thanks, Martin (Germany)

Question. I'm lookin to do the "straight up" to the 351m of my 79 T-Bird. I understand that the new gear sets will be slotted and all I have to do is slide them on. But now the dots wouldn't match up if I return the crank to "straight up" right? Assuming that my engine was retarded from factory. My question is, to make the dots line up again, would I have to move the crank counter/clockwise to match the Camshaft? I've never done this before so all of this is just hypothetical steps I'm thinking about. Does that sound correct or am I missing something?
