My first phonograph was a Victrola XI, bought for me for $5.00 around 1944 from the Salvation Army in Santa Monica. The S.A. delivered it wrapped in moving quilts on a rainy day. Times have changed and the Salvation Army (I'm now in NYC) no longer delivers, and I sure don't see any Victrolas there to buy! Still like to go to the Salvation Army, even with the COVID-19 risk.

Around about 1921, or so Victor had changed their numbering system and this style became the 90

I had two of these. I sold them to afford my Credenza. Plus I upgraded to a VV-111 for a floor model pre-electric era machine.

I have the table top model with gold plating. It is my goto unit for playing acoustic records.

That's awesome. Those table models are the earliest version. I have actually never seen one in person. The floor models are everywhere. The upright variation was the companies most popular floor model.

I have this same XI Victrola. I took the “motor” out, degreased it, re-greased and oiled it, put it back together…but now the speed adjustment doesn’t seem to be working…and when I put a record on and drop the needle in it…it slows down and stops. I wound it all the way up. Ugh. I believe everything is back together exactly how it should be, so not sure what is going on. HELP!!!! It was working fine before I did this.

@@erikrenner i certainly do not know what I am doing. If you soak and slosh around enough. can’t i get them clean enough. i just got my first victrola, way overpaid, but I do want it to play. I am waiting for steel needles and was advised to “service” the motor before trying to play. I have no idea of the history, but I do know it cranks and spins the turntable and does not make scary noises of any kind. it needs a new felt cover, and the back plate is missing. Not sure what to do about that. may just tack on a piece of cardboard to keep the spiders out after I clean the inside of the cabinet.

I have a very early one from 1912. 14088b. Unfortunately the original owners upgraded the arm to No. 2.
