For everybody wondering where the fourth dimension is, the colors of the voxels are used to show what’s happening in the fourth dimension on that step. The link given in the description explains how the whole thing works.

What exactly is being shown? Is this just one cross-section of it or some kind of projection?

Since I assume this is made out of tesseracts: have you tried out any CA that use a 16-cell grid or a 24-cell grid?

Since the 3d space is a finite space, its easy to think about the 4th dimension here. It's basically a 1 dimensional series of the 3d space, and the rules of movement between the 3d spaces is governed by the 4d math, and what we're seeing here is just one of those slices with pixels moving between them.

I notice that most of these resemble 3D fractals of various sorts, such as Perlin noise or Menger sponge.

what if the color of the cell was both based on the density (assuming it counts dying cells as well) and the alive/dying cell ratio? (not sure if i worded it correctly)

It must be possible to generalize Fredkin's parity rule to 4D and up: for birth, select every odd transition and no even transitions, and for survival, either select all even and no odd, or all odd and no even.
