A historical and secular architectural monument, the medieval Citadel of Deva was built in the middle of the 13th century on Cetății Hill, a volcanic cone with an altitude of 378 m. Due to its special strategic position, the citadel guarded from the height overlooking the city of Deva, centuries in turn, exiting and entering Transylvania through the Mureș valley. Traces of Neolithic and Bronze Age habitation have been discovered here, and the presence of carved stone blocks, with the characteristic dovetail-shaped cuts, makes archaeologists intuit the remains of a Dacian fortification.
