Nikko is located in the northern Kanto region of Japan and the northwest of Tochigi Prefecture. It is a tourist destination with both history and natural scenery. The two shrines and one temple of the World Heritage, namely Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Nikko Futarasan Shrine and Nikko Sanrinnoji Temple, are collectively called "Nikko Sanchi". After being washed by history, the ancient shrines and temples are hidden under towering giant trees, full of tranquility and mystery.
The famous Nikko Toshogu Shrine holds the Spring Festival and the Autumn Festival every year. On October 16, the sacred Yabusame ceremony was held the day before the Autumn Festival. We were lucky enough to observe the entire process of the sacred event. Yabusame is a form of cavalry archery that has been popular among samurai since the Kamakura period. It is worth seeing the sight of the archers controlling the horses to rush from Omotesando to Toshogu Shrine and hit the target.
