Lol it was tested on a painted wall, if it works there the only thing a screen will do is make it better. As for zoom and... optics? I don't think you understand how laser projection works. 1. Regarding the black level - for any projector there is one undeniable truth: the blackest black will always be the same as your white wall, because one can not project darkness. The only way to handle that is to get special projection screens that only reflect light at specific angles, so from projector to your eyes and do not reflect light from the rest of the room to you. Those look dark grey when projector is off and that will be your blackest black tone then. 2. High input lag (a figure would be nice) is a big drawback for any PC use case. You can easily measure (relative) input lag by playing back a video that shows a timer with milliseconds on it. Play it on both a laptop (with a known, small input lag) and the projector connected to the same laptop in mirrored configuration. Take a photo of both screens at the same time (with high shutter speed, preferably with a dSLR) and you will get a photo with two numbers on the two screens. The difference between then will be the difference between input lags between the screens.

Wonderful. Let's be real now, many more people than just myself share the same cirumstance of *having windows* . I'm hardly speaking just for myself. As to the caveat I refer to, it has nothing to do with me and my specific situation, it has to do with the way in which a projector of any quality gets washed out when used in a room with ambient light. Not even this 6 grand miracle can properly combat that.

Unfortunately consumers arent interested in projectors, so theres no incentive for manufacturers to innovate and figure out how to lower costs or fix issues. It's still just a DLP projector: using a laser light source (where it shines a blue laser on a phosphor wheel) doesn't actually change the image quality at all, it just reduces the power/heat and extends the lifespan as compared to an incandescent. All of the things listed like good contrast come from it being a high quality DLP projector.

The only projectors that work in bright rooms use long throw projection onto an ambient light rejecting screen, not a wall. Something like a Diamond Black screen that costs a few thousand but gives you a 120” 2.35:1 picture at oled quality. The tech to watch are the JVC 4k reference projectors with insane contrast ratios. This short throw will only ever work in a dark room.

I'm using a 2000 lumens 1080p regular digital projector, in a lit room, in daytime, on a 120 inch screen, and I have a 1080p led monitor next to it. Aside from slightly more washed out colors, there is not much difference. In a dark room there is no difference. It also comes down to the quality of your projector screen. Obviously projecting onto a white wall is dumb. Long story short, I AM NEVER GOING BACK TO TELEVISION. The screen is huge, it is crisp, it looks good in most light levels and there is much less lag. It is also much cheaper. $900 + $500 for good screen with $200 lamp change every 2 years vs $whateverthefuck since 120 inch tv's don't exist at an affordable price point, if at all.

Every projector mentions increase in brightness. There comes a point when brightness does not matter. You are only going to turn the brightness down to what you eyes can handle anyway. I know that brightness matters if you are using them in a bright room or outdoors, but most people use their projectors in a home theater which is usually relatively dark so brightness is not a big issue unless you are talking about huge movie theater size screens.
@falsernet

My projector uses an LCD, not a DLP chip, with (awkwardly) 1280x768 resolution. It brightens up instantly because it uses an LED lamp (3000 lumen) instead of the normal metal halide bulbs. It cost about $160 on Amazon, and can be found with some digging. Laser is better and can be brighter, but for the money this is great.

numb3r6 And a completely different price bracket, which I guess you completely ignored. Not to mention, color wheel is MOSTLY A DLP ISSUE, LCDs don't need them as you either have the filter on the LCD itself, picture looks just like a normal monitor's color strips or subpixels, or they use 3 LCDs separated by dichroic mirrors and hence no color wheel, like 3 DLP cinema projectors.

I remember when my unit got back to Germany after our first deployment to Iraq. We (single soldiers in the barracks) had some money sitting in our accounts due to having nothing to spend it on while breathing sand and dust for over a year in Iraq. So I saw allot of guys buy big honkin TVs and they were still the pretty monster sized and heavy as hell ones we all remember but no longer see anymore. Moving with TVs like that or living with them eating up allot of space in a already small room was a compromise for getting a big screen. I on the other hand bought a projector in Germany and turned my wall at the foot of my bed into a much bigger screen and far more comfortable to enjoy experience. Plus the projector was smaller than a laptop and easy to carry around and setup. I since took projectors to 2 more deployments to Iraq back in the day and each time it was the perfect solution for watching movies or playing Xbox games over seas with little effort in setup and moving it around. I would recommend projectors to anyone who is limited in space but still wants a big screen experience. Of course TVs now have huge screens and incredible pictures and features. But they also come with price tags that far outstrip their actual worth. Yet projectors are getting cheaper and cheaper to get.

Short-throw projectors are very cool, provided you have a flawless wall, which rarely exist. Geometry distortion is an issue (even seen in this video), but with a good wall or screen, it's not a problem (or negligible).

Found this on amazon: Although I bought warranty extension of 5 years, Dell states (nothing in writing, only when you phone them) that the lamp has only 1 year warranty (against the EU minimum 2 years warranty on the product, which Dell will ignore). The lamp failed at 800 hours in 15 months (4% of its advertised life of 20,000 hours and 10 years) and Dell refused to replace it (despite the 5 years extended warranty) and ignored EU law (2 years warranty) and England law (6 years against manufacturing defects) and called the lamp "consumable" (Dell likened it to printer cartridges or disposable batteries, however those you can change yourself but you cannot do that with the lamp projector). The fan is noisy (and even much noisier if you want maximum claimed brightness of 5000 lumens). The lag on games is noticeable on action games (such as FPS). Image quality is reasonable but it lacks 3D of the competitors. The HDR is poor. The reliability of this projector is poor. Dell support is deplorable (it used to be excellent in the past but not anymore).

It looks washed out when the lights in the room are on or when sunlight comes in, which only makes sense. Light from an outside source does fall onto the screen and will be reflected to your eyes, it's unavoidable. In the shots where the room is darkened the image looks fine.

All Kina Ting If you turn all the lights on in your local cinema that too would be washed out as would any TV where light output is shining at the screen or TV image, however if you dim the lights as is the correct way to view movies there is no difference between display devices or no differences that are worth worrying about, in closing when using a projector with a custom screen with a screen material that can if need be used for lights on if so desired although not ideal, a high gain screen material that reflects light is always going to be preferred over a painted wall that does nothing to help the image and in all honesty is a not an option if you buy a projector you need a custom screen, period.

I started to buy a projection TV in years past but the downside was you needed a dark room, and I really didn't want to spend all weekend watching football in a 'movie theater' setting. And you also had to deal with replacing expensive projector lamps. I did buy a DLP TV which was pretty good at the time, (with the annoying 'rainbow effect') but today's flat screens blow them away with razor sharp images and colors. Even my 5 year old 55" Samsung Smart TV makes the neighbors go, "WOW" when they see it. I'm not so sure the laser projector would be much of an improvement.

Not sure that was the clearest description of this generation of laser projectors. This projector (like most well priced laser projectors) works by shining the laser at a spinning phosphorus disk to produce a bright light source (replacing the conventional lamps.) beyond that they are basically the same as there lamp brothers as they both generally use the same image source in the case a DLP chip.

Really? I bought a 65inch LG B7 OLED last year and watching this video, I kinda wished I had of waited and bought this instead. Don't get me wrong, the colours and deep blacks of OLED are nothing short of amazing, but an ultra short throw projector I can stick on a TV stand, project onto a 100" screen and be decent in both daytime and night-time viewing is very appealing. The whole reason why I didn't go for a projector in the first place was the headache of mounting at the opposite end of the room, running stupidly long cables everywhere and the washed out picture in anything but complete darkness. This eliminates all of that.

You can only watch the projector in complete darkness. Otherwise as all of you guys can clearly see, the picture is washed out. The contrast is still not that great. agreed projectors should be used for very limited applications while a tv can be best basically in any situation. but they can be useful, if you have a dark room with a sofa or better a bed it turns everything into a cinema and you just can't match how enjoyable is to watch a movie in a dark room with decent audio and a 120" screen right in fron of you. as a student i have a room with a big bed and a white wall in front of me, a 70€ 1000lumen projector from amazon managed to create a situation i don't have with my 60" led TV you just have to account the rest

Your advice to get the TV is ok and all but your roast of this projector/all projectors are incorrect. 1st. Epson are the brightest projectors in color reproduction since they have 3 color chips. DLP have larger white segment and many people can see the spinning wheel in action films. 2nd. >4500lumens are enough for daytime voewing and with the lights turned on! Ive got Epson 1980wu and Its great. However I strongly think 2400lumens projectors are utter shit and needs a black painted room to look OK!

a dedicated screen for short throw projectors (they will significantly reduce all light that is not coming from below, where the projector is located) will produce a far superior image compared to a basic screen or a wall. reviewing a ST projector withouth such a screen is like reviewing a mountainbike with road slicks mounted.
