Thank you Robbie! I was fatigued by the Chrome 4k external monitor issue and this 3 year old video provided the key to solving it. I spent hours & hours on it before I tracked this video down.

Here's my understanding of 4k outputs. I'm probably wrong on some of this. 4k output to an external monitor relies on mainly 2 different things: graphical output and port capabilities. Graphical output comes from either the CPU (processor) or the GPU (graphics card). Most chromebooks (if any, I'm not really sure) don't have a GPU so it's based on CPU graphical output capability. The port capabilities required for 4k output is: HDMI 2.0, Display Port 1.4. The port may be able to handle the output to spec but the CPU may not be. If Display Port can do 4k60Hz and HDMI 2.0 can't quite get there it may be because HDMI has to also transfer audio, Display Port doesn't. Since chromebooks are geared to run mostly on lower end hardware, then either the CPU or ChromeOS may not be "out-of-the-box" prepared to output 4k60Hz natively to a port that can technically handle it but might be a little strenuous on the system. If you're getting 4k30Hz on one port, but 4k60Hz on another port, both on the same system, I'm guessing it's the audio pass-through on HDMI that might be the limiting factor. I'm guessing to a point here, please be gentle with me.

Just plug your Google Pixelbook with HP Z27 display via proper USB-C cable and you get 4K60 video stream, 60W power for instantly charging your Chromebook and all devices, 4 additional USB-A ports and one additional USB-C port. I use this configuration also for cables elimination because I pluged in all periferial devices (KV-300H keyboard (with 2 additional USB-A ports), mouse, Ethernet dongle etc) to my HP Z27 display. Google Pixelbook works fine with all those stuff via single USB-C cable (proper cable come with HP Z27 display).

The 4k30hz limitation is usually either the GPU or the HDMI port. Most low end integrated GPUs can't handle 4K at 60hz. And even if it can, the manufacturer has to add an HDMI 2.0 port or higher. You need both for4k60.

To quickly change the display size/scale you can hold down the "ctrl" and "shift" keys while tapping the "+" or "-" key. In the older versions of the OS you used to get a notification in the lower right-hand corner, but when I use this method now it doesn't give a notification.

This video is lacking a lot of information. HDMI 4k 60 is possible only with HDMI 2.0 output from you video card + HDMI 2.0 display / tv. The problem usually is the computer because most Intel onboard graphics are only HDMI 1.4 so it only support 4k 30 hz.
@nmtb1972

You need HDMI 2.1 for 120 FPS which only became a standard last year. I tried to hold off for a 2019 TV which can have this standard, just in case my internal Netflix app is not getting supported any more on the TV. Unfortunately my TV died, so I'm stuck with 2.0. So yes, do check screen and cable to see if it has the correct spec.

Google is almost there. The Pixel Slate hardware is already great just make it with more color options and better improve the software for each coming generations. Google could have succeeded in its own market niche with Chromebook/tablets. Shouldn't have stopped the production of the tablets.

@@BrotherO4 Yes. Google's production of tablets in general. It's just sad. Because, Google was almost there, esp. the Pixel Slate. Just work on the pricing strategy and software improvements, it will be the most sought and used by many people who aren't into the apple ecosystem.

Yeah it's depressing because ChromeOS on tablets works really well. Android app support is buggy but it's just as buggy in laptops. Google should be fixing this. ChromeOS is the best on the move operating system. You don't need to video edit on the train, you need to browse the web efficiently.

$150 yes, I think. Not $100 new (or don't buy one if you find it). Just look used on ebay for a chromebox that sold new for $200 or $250 a year ago. Get a box and not a book if you have a windows laptop. Pay for the guts, not the screen. It really is a great backup system. "Used" really will work new, as advertised. I've been rockin' Chrome OS since 2012 as an auxillary to Windows. Huge believer, great value.
