It's always been a mystery to me why Scott got so much attention and recognition and Shackleton so comparatively little. Shackleton was a real leader and hero.

@@mikelheron20Scott was more the quintessential posh British hero, whereas Irish Shackleton was more rough around the edges, which meant the Brits had more admiration for the martyr Scott. I think more latterly, in part down to American admiration for Shackleton, the perceptions of the two men shifted.

The Endurance was made incredibly well - I was reading on how the ship builders treated The Endurance as a passion project, as it was one of the last ships to be made like that.

Just watched a Biographical on this dude! He's a freaking legend! A part that I found funny was he use of psychology on his men. He wouldn't allow food to be stockpiled while they were stranded. Convincing his men they wouldn't be staying long enough. And when some of his men where exausted and begging them for sleep. He allowed them some rest. However after only 5 minutes he woke them up telling them it had been half an hour. The had no idea and carried on

I don't think it'd take much sense to realize how long you'll be staying there. Looking at how long it took to get where they are, the food they had available, how long that food would last and the time it takes to get back to where they came seems like an obvious equation to solve for anyone aboard. Plus, if I'm tired and sleep for 5 mins after working all day, I'll know it's only been 5 mins if I'm woken up right after falling asleep. We're not retarded meat bags of humans. We actually have sense and we're aware of situations.
@mobix6354

Not stockpiling the food was a huge mistake. The men blamed him for it. His optimising was too great and they have suffered as a result.

Have any of you tasted the whisky named in'his honour? Try the Shackleton. Reasonably good whisky. It is not a heavy, smoky sweet mash. Enjoy it in honour and memory of Sir Ernest and Frank Worsley.
