Kotor (Italian: Cattaro) is a coastal town in Montenegro.
The old Mediterranean port of Kotor is surrounded by walls built during the Venetian period. It is located in the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), one of the most rugged parts of the Adriatic Sea.
(The history of the city dates back to 168 BC. Founded by the Romans, the name of the city at that time was Acruvium. A castle was built in the city by Emperor Justinianus in 535.)
The old town of Kotor is the best preserved medieval urban settlement typical of cities built in the 12th and 14th centuries. Medieval architecture and numerous cultural heritage monuments have included Kotor in the UNESCO "World Natural and Cultural Heritage" list. Structures intertwined with streets and squares are spreading all over the city. In one of these St. Tripuna is a monument of Romanesque culture and one of the recognizable symbols of the city.
